Overview

About the property

Modern but cosy rural retreat in the heart of the Mendips

Poplar Farm Holiday Cottage invites you to relax and unwind, perhaps with a glass of our own cider in hand, sitting outside gazing over to the Mendips and Cheddar Gorge.

Converted just a few years ago, we offer a very well appointed, two bedroom, two shower room luxury base, gas centrally heated, from which to sample and explore the delights of Somerset and all that the West Country has to offer. The open plan living area and kitchen, which is particularly well equipped, are both light and airy, and have solid oak floors running through to the hall and both bedrooms. Bedroom one has a fitted wardrobe within which is a good sized chest of draws. Wall lights are fitted above the king size double bed which can be adapted to two single beds as shown. Leading off is an en-suite shower wet room with sink and toilet.

Bedroom two also has a good size wardrobe and chest of draws, with bedside cabinets and individual lamps.

Outdoor facilities: Just outside your front door is the garden, an area of lawn that can be lit by the exterior lighting of the cottage on those warm summer evenings. Outdoor furniture, tables, sun shade, and barbecue are provided and is equally suited to breakfasting whilst planning the days events.

The parking area just outside the cottage has space for a number of cars if necessary, with the potential for under-cover storage of bicycles if requested. The under cover area also allows for washing to be hung out to dry, safe in the knowledge that a shower will not catch you out. Don't worry, pegs are provided.

A further garden area extends down to the veg patch, orchard and small pond.

This area is separately fenced off, and often has a few of our sheep in residence, saving me the bother of mowing the lawn. They are guaranteed to be here during lambing as this takes place in the barn to the right as you look at the cottage front door.

Fantasic find, very close to Cheddar

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, I would like to say thanks to Simon and Annette for going that extra mile and making our stay that extra bit special, the kids especially loved feeding the sheep and pigs. You will find it hard to find better hosts.

We had a fantastic week here, location is great - easy for the Gorge, Wookey Hole, Wells and the seaside.... if that doesn't take your fancy then there are copious walks to go on. The cottage has everything you need, mixed in with some farm made cider and duck eggs with stunning views of Cheddar Gorge.

We would have loved to have stayed longer as there is so much to do locally.

If like me you read reviews before booking, then do not hesitate to book as you will not be disappointed.

Thanks again

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for this stunning review, we are touched. We do appreciate how lucky we are to live where other people go on holiday to, but it is always nice to hear when our guests appreciate us as well. We are always happy to introduce our guest to our animals particularly if they have not had the opportunity to have such up close contact before, and hope that they appreciate our attitude to them. So thank you again, we loved having you and hope to mee you again some time. Much appreciated.

This little annex offers good value, a good location and is well fitted out and comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

SImon and Annette are lovely hosts and the flowers, eggs, milk, beer, wine and cider were much appreciated! We were a little unlucky with the weather so did not use the outside area much as, if it wasn't raining, we went out but the setting from the gate looking across to Cheddar Gorge (1.5 miles) is lovely. The sheep and ducks are also good to have around and the farm is just away from the road to Wedmore so is lovely and quiet. We also really appreciated having wifi. The cottage is well-maintained and easy to relax in. The bathrooms are very nicely done and its great to have one for each bedroom which is unusual in a 2-bed let.

Cheddar is busy but the Gorge is well worth a few hours. We also walked up the cliffside to get the best views (pretty strenuous for the not-very fit). Wedmore is a comfortably attractive village with independent shops, pubs and a good Indian restaurant (take your own alcohol).

We loved pootling about the area, walking up the various hills and, because of the rain, spent time in plenty of good pubs and tearooms. It is easy to eat very well and, as expected, the many opportunities to try cheeses and ciders were excellent. So many lovely National Trust places to visit. Highlights: a choral concert in Wells Cathedral, pre-booked lunch at River Cottage near Lyme Regis (about 1 hour away), Glastonbury in the daytime (not so nice in the evening, sadly), Dunster (also 1 hour). Burnham is not so pretty but nearby for a nice stretching walk.

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday here in Somerset with. It's always a gamble when selecting a cottage on the internet but we definatley struck holiday gold. All the previous reviews and descriptions are spot on, the cottage is spotless and so cosy if you want to spend a night in. We are a family of 4 (chikdren aged 10 & 13), and there was plenty of space for us to relax. The garden is a great place to relax with a BBQ and plenty of space for playing games. Simon and Annette are the perfect hosts. Thank you so much for the kind gifts of eggs, wine, cider and milk. We really enjoyed meeting the pigs and the sheep. Thanks also for the suggestions of places to visit. We were lucky to co-incide with the Royal Bath & West show which was pretty amazing, and the "interesting" town of Glastonbury was well worth a visit. Cheddar Gorge is only a few minutes away and has a couple of good walks around it with amazing views and sights. We simply ran out of time on this holiday and would have loved to say for another week to fit everything in. We would definitely recommend Simon and Annettes cottage to anyone wanting a peacfull holiday in a beautifull setting. Thank you.

Owner's Response: Hi Neil, Dawn, and family, You said that you would write a revue, as most do, but wow, when you write one you really write one. What can we say, you were all great, and it was an absolute pleasure having you stay with us. Great to hear that you enjoyed our local agricultural show, and sorry that the monkeys at Longleat ate your car windscreen washer nozzle, these are the things that make memories... Thanks again for selecting us, and for such a beautiful revue. You can come again. All our best wishes. Simon & Annette.

Perfect countryside holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful week in this delightful holiday cottage for a family holiday (two adults and two year old twin boys). There was good communication from the owners for booking and organising the stay via email.

We received a warm welcome from Simon and Annette on arrival and found everything and more that we needed to settle in, including home made cider and freshly laid duck eggs. My boys especially liked seeing the sheep and ducks on the farm.

The cottage was beautifully decorated, well laid out and spotlessly clean. There was a shared parking area but otherwise it was very private. Simon and Annette were very friendly and were on hand if you needed anything.

The cottage is in a small rural village but is only a few minutes drive from wedmore, where you can find shops and pubs, and it is a few miles from Cheddar. At only half an hour from the city of Wells and the beach at Weston Super Mare and under an hour from Bath and Longleat Safari Park we found plenty to keep us occupied during our stay.

Overall, the perfect place to go if you want a quiet countryside getaway with good access for exploring surrounding Somerset.

Owner's Response: Hi Amanda, Thank you so much for writing such a complimentary revue of our cottage, it is always so pleasing to hear that our guests have enjoyed the cottage, we do our best to make sure that it is spotless and has a few creature comforts, not just the basics. We would also like to compliment you on your obvious appreciation of our cider, it can be an acquired taste but you were away from the off, well done!! Anyway thank you again for going to the trouble of writing the revue and for your compliments, maybe we will see you again in the near future. Our best wishes to you all. Love Simon & Annette.

Golf: Isle of Wedmore Golf Club is one of Somerset’s friendliest clubs, a warm welcome is always extended to our members and visitors including societies and corporate visitors. The Isle of Wedmore Golf Club was founded in 1992 and is located just 2 miles from Poplar Farm.

Our location benefits from breathtaking panoramic views of the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Valley, Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset Levels. Our parkland course has been carefully designed to maintain and enhance the natural environment offering 18 holes (par 70) of over 6000 yards in 2 nine hole loops. Both these loops start and finish at our excellent and newly extended Clubhouse which offers a wide range of delicious snacks, meals and beverages. It provides a challenge for the experienced golfer but at the same time is gentle enough for the less skilful player.
