Overview

About the property

Villa Pocilgo stands on the site of the original pigsties, next to the main house, Casa Velha, where owners reside at weekends. It features a very bright living room with open fireplace and two windows, two full size seating/sleeping divans, one small double bed-settee and a fitted kitchenette/diner, leading to a bathroom and to a large double bedroom. Outside there is a terrace featuring a pergola partly covered in grape producing vines, a built-in barbeque at one end and a dining table, large parasol and chairs at the other end. Ideal for romantic alfresco dining. It looks across a small Mediterranean garden to a lawn area, a lake (biological swimming-pool) and open land covered in almond and fig trees, with the ocean as a backdrop. The view from all rooms and terrace is panoramic and quite beautiful.

The property is a small farm located on a protected piece of land, between the Boavista Golf Resort, and the ocean. There are three houses on the grounds: Casa Velha, the original farmhouse (max. 10 occupants), offering a very large terrace with BBQ, 4 bedrooms, large downstairs split-level living room with fireplace, dining and TV areas and another large sitting room with TV upstairs. Owners reside here some weekends and long holidays. Villa Pocilgo, a charming and cozy 1 bedroom cottage (max. 4 occupants) with open fireplace, next to Casa Velha, with its own terrace and BBQ and sharing the same amazing views across the biological swimming-pool and the gardens, through fig and almond trees and wild fennel, to the sea, . And Villa Celeiro, a very spacious 2 bedroom split-level villa (max. 6 occupants), with mezzanine, its own garden with lawn, rockery and pine and almond trees.

One can walk along the cliff path, after crossing the land, either left to Praia de Porto de Mós, or right towards Praia da Luz. The very large biological pool, shard by the 3 houses, looks like a natural lake and is a favourite with most children! It is also a great attraction for migrating birds and small wild ducks which must be chased off the water...

Guestbook comments from the manager

5 stars. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this peaceful place away from the crowds. It is beautifully located in a rural area with a glimpse of the sea not far from Lagos. The apartment was clean and well equipped. The well maintained gardens and the natural pool add to its charme. You can walk along the clifftops to a beach nearby. With a car most of the attractions of the Algarve are within easy reach. Highly recommended! Best wishes Gerhard

Tranquil property away from it all

  • 4 of 5

Very peaceful location for visitors wanting restful vacation accommodation. We enjoyed lazy meals on the patio overlooking the lovely garden, many opportunities to see hoopoes and azure-winged magpies, cliff-tops walks to the nearest beaches, swims in the pool, and visits from Bruno the dog.

Easy access to a supermarket and straightforward access to the A22 and N125. The kitchen is basic but adequate for simple meals.

Amazing location with the best view in Lagos.

  • 5 of 5

Its an amazing place. we spent 5 months in the villa and it was our best months ever spent on vacation. the location is beautiful, with a lot of green and very close to the cliffs. Luz and Lagos beaches are a quick walk away. further more, the owners are amazing; super friendly and helpful (the invited us to have Christmas with them!!!). We will be back for sure. Thank you so much for the lovely time and see you soon.

Excellent place for a quiet break but still close to amenities.

  • 5 of 5

Although we were unlucky with the weather (we weren’t really expecting much dark cloud and rain in May) we had a really good holiday and that was largely thanks to Villa Pocilgo. Situated about a mile off made roads along a track (don’t go in a low slung sports car), it is in a wonderful quiet position with a large idyllic garden and a wonderful sea view. It was difficult to believe we were only a 10 minute drive away from the popular resort of Lagos.

The property is equipped with all the essentials (including wifi) and the resident caretakers on site were very helpful. Sadly, because of the weather we only used the outdoor furniture on a couple of 2 days and the barbecue will have to wait for our second visit. We really appreciated the direct access to the coastal path and being able to walk one way along the cliffs to Mos or the other way to Luz. Both have lovely beaches and good restaurants.

All in all this is a great place for a relaxing break, and we would love to return one day.

Wunderschönes einfaches Häuschen

  • 5 of 5

As in paradise!

  • 3 of 5

Dear Ana Mary,

We were stunned with the garden views, the pond, Bruno, kind hosts, the birds, the location by the cliffs,...

The setting was like a magnet to us.

Thank you for your restaurant hints.

They turned out to be really delicious.

The house was very cute and convenient - also the bed was comfortable.

In winter temperature it was kind of an adventure to heat it, but it was very worthwhile.

Thank you!

Best regards

Karen and Manu

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words Karen. Please send me details of the heating problems you encountered as nothing was mentioned to me during your stay? Looking forward to seeing you and Manu on a future occasion, perhaps when you next choose the Lagos region of Portugal for a holiday! And hoping the weather will be kinder at that time... Sincerely, Ana Maria

Lovely on the outside, Shabby on the inside

  • 1 of 5

Unfortunately, the description of a "Stunning Farmhouse" does not extend to the interior of the cottage. Whilst the grounds and properties look good from outside, we found the cottage interior rather shabby and in need of some updating and refurbishing. Many items were broken or cracked, with rusty washing machine, shower screen and bathroom heater, broken handles to the bedroom furniture making the drawers unusable and everything generally rather tired looking, including the bedding. The kitchen didn't feel particularly hygienic to us with broken tiles to the work surface and well used equipment. We spent a week in February and we assured that we would have an open fire for warmth. We were very disappointed to find that the fire smoked so much that we were unable to use it. There was no Wifi as advertised, other than going to the farmhouse, no DVD and not even a welcome folder. We would also mention that to get there you have to drive a long stretch of dirt track (with ruts) to get to the property. Maybe not so bad in summer, but after a rainy week in February, the road was proving rather difficult and not something many people would want to undertake in a small hire car. We feel the owner should make this clear before booking.

Such a pity that the care and attention the grounds have been given didn't extend to the interior of the cottage, as it's a great location. Sadly, we shall not return.

Owner's Response: These guests booked a week's holiday at Vila Pocilgo, the one bedroom cottage standing next to Casa Velha, the original 4 bedroom farmhouse. They had made specific requests prior to booking, checking on the heating facilities available at the cottage (hot/cold air conditioning in the open-space living room, as well as wood burning fireplace, electric/oil heaters in bedroom and bathroom), the possibility of sleeping in two separate beds and the availability of an extra 2 pillows for the lady to be more comfortable at night. All this was confirmed and provided. I advised them by e-mail on the eve of their arrival that, due to serious ill-health of my husband I had been prevented from travelling down to Lagos from Lisbon, where we reside, to check the cottage and welcome them as intended. But asked them to call me using the land-line in the main farmhouse if anything needed attention - the resident caretakers would see to it.They were very unlucky that their stay fell precisely on the third week running of exceptionally bad weather all along the coast of Portugal, with extremely heavy rain, high seas and high winds - something very unusual in Algarve winters and not experienced for decades. This caused the fireplace not to smoke properly during their stay as the extremely strong winds made it roll back inside. But the other means of heating were functioning without problem and I invited them, when advised of this problem, to move to or spend afternoons and evenings in Casa Velha where the fireplace has a glass door and the chimney being taller did not suffer so much the effect of the wind. This they accepted and stated was warm and comfortable.A de-humidifier was also provided since humidity was running high. with so much rain. Rust marks on some equipment come from the salt content in the air all year round, coupled wit humidity in winter and are common by seaside..DVD was in bdrm. and Wifi maybe did not work due to extreme weather conditions since the router giving signal to the 3 houses is located high up in CasaVelha. Bedding is all recent, from IKEA,cotton or cotton/polyester mix. Pillows were brand new, and a choice of replacement/additional bedding was offered.Heating charges were not applied, and alternative accommodation was offered but declined, Compensation was given although adverse weather conditions naturally beyond our responsibility.
