If your're looking for an 'off the international tourist trail' holiday, this could be the one for you. Marina di Carrara is a small coastal town which seems to attract a great deal of Italian holiday makers. The only other tourists we encountered during our stay were a handful of other Europeans but no British tourists. This provided us with the authenticity we were looking for. Practice your Italian before you go, as very few locals speak English which resulted in a few surprise meals in the local restaurants and one or two very interesting bus journeys. However, Marina di Carrara proved to be an excellent base for visiting nearby Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Viareggio by train and the famous Cinque Terre by boat. For relaxing by the beach days, Marina di Carrara offers pleasant and clean private and public beaches; about 15 minutes walk from the appartment. The appartment itself is part of a very beautiful and grand listed building, which has been refurbished to a very high standard. The owners live in part of the building, speak excellent english, are very friendly and helpful but respected our privacy during our stay. A restaurant well worth a visit is, Ristorante Pizzeria Venezia, situated on the beach front, fabulous food, helpful, friendly staff and wonderful surroundings! All in all an ideal holiday offering a genuine Italian experience.
