Walnut Tree Cottage is on the edge of a small hamlet surrounded by beautiful countryside. We fell in love with the cottage on sight and hope you will too. The house is spacious: it is a real home not a compact holiday gite. We have rented the property long term for the last few years hence the gap in reviews.
The cottage is comfortably furnished and sleeps up to five plus baby in two bedrooms. The sitting room retains many original features such as the traditional Charentaise fireplace, beams and oak floor. The old 'sejour' is a kitchen/diner with comfortable lounge seating around the wood burning stove. The ensuite (bath and loo) master bedroom has a double bed whilst the other has twin beds with plenty of space for the foldaway bed and cot. A newly refurbished shower room with loo is adjacent. Each bedroom has a mirror and a hair-dryer. There 3 steps plus a door down to the bedrooms which separates them from the living area but does make access for wheelchair users or the infirm difficult.
Outside, to the rear, there is, we think, a beautiful terrace, perfect for eating alfresco or simply for enjoying the odd glass of wine or two! We now have an 3.66m circular Intex above ground pool, absolutely brilliant for cooling off after fantastic sightseeing as well as on sunny summer days. Beyond is a lawn with plenty of room for kicking a football; there are also fruit and nut trees which you are able to enjoy in season. The garden is enclosed on three sides, the fourth having a gap for off lane parking for two cars. The garden enjoys both sun and shade. The cottage is ideal for a memorable family holiday or for couples wanting a romantic break.
The area has many attractions, just ask us for details and recommendations.
Other than comments on Trip Advisor, comments made by email include "Thank you so much Helen, your cottage was wonderful, we enjoyed our stay tremendously"; Just a very quick message to thank you for the hire of your home in France. It was exactly what we wanted and needed. The location (as we had hoped) ensured we could do little but relax, read, barbecue, drink wine and slump in the sunshine - the pool was an unexpected and welcome extra. We came away with a heavy heart but with batteries fully charged to face England and the world of work."; "We were stunned by the size of the garden and it was lovely to have shade and sunshine" and 'Your home is lovely and we felt like we had the most relaxing holiday for a few years".
The cottage is easy to reach by air or ferry. Angouleme airport is around 30 minutes away, Bordeaux and Bergerac are around the hour and a half mark with Limoges around 2 hours. Calais is approx 8 hours and St Malo five. The nearest train stations are Montmoreau and Chalais with links to Paris via Angouleme. The new TGV has stations at Angouleme and Bordeaux. Car Hire is available at each port, airport and train station.

The cottage is ideally located for the Angouleme vintage car rally which takes place each September and the Chalais Equestrian event in August.
The cottage and garden are for your sole use. Our caretaker may call by to cut the grass or help you with anything unforeseen but he won't intrude on your holiday - he is a lovely man. Due to the character of the cottage: it is centuries old, some of the floors are uneven. Please be aware of this when making a booking. There is a door between the living and sleeping areas, at the steps, for further privacy and safety.
We do ask that you respect the French way and strip the beds and clean the fridge on vacation. This not only keeps our changeover lady happy but helps us to keep the rental to a minimum. This isn't a business but our home which we welcome you to.
We truly hope that you have a fantastic stay at our cottage but above all: enjoy!
