About Paul Smethurst
Retired English professor and his wife who live in Bali and Dorset.
Paul Smethurst purchased this Villa in 2007
Why Paul Smethurst chose Bedugul
The villa was bought by the owners as a cool retreat from their main home in South Bali - we come to enjoy the cool fresh air and unique environment, and to stock up on local coffee, vegetables, fruit and plants from the botanical gardens. Ideal for those looking for a quiet and peaceful short break or as second base for a larger tour of Bali. The house is popular with local expats who book it up most weekends at short notice, so for a longer stay, you need to book a few weeks in advance.
What makes this Villa unique
Cool mountain air, ideal base for trekking or exploring this unique area of mountains and waterfalls, taking wooden canoes on the lakes, canyoning and visiting coffee, clove and other spice plantations.

Bali mountain stay
We arrived never having been in Bali before, property was better than expected in terms of view and gardens. Lovely house. I would have loved to see screen on the windows so that you could keep windows open and not worry about the bugs and to also keep the air moving and fresh. As an older home even though well maintained it did have some musty smells and open windows would have helped this. The staff were great, house keeper and driver were really wonderful and the owners were very helpful and responsive. Would recommend it to any0one wanting a peaceful getaway.
Yes it is important to keep the windows open to get a good airflow in a wooden house. Screens would spoil the lovely views I think and there are no mosquitos or harmful bugs. So most guests would want to keep them open. The house flies can be a bit annoying during the day at this time of year, but they are completely harmless. We do have sprays and fly killers which guests can use if they wish. We do also advise guests not to leave any food out and to keep surfaces clean.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the host was very helpful and attentive. Definitely will recommend to our friends or stay here again if we ever visit Bedugul. The view is amazing and the house is very well managed and feels very homely.
quiet little cabin, beautiful surroundings!
Great stay, lovely cabin although lots of bugs (only flies and spiders) but that is to be expected! The bathrooms and kitchen were a little dated but perfectly functional. The cleaner was so friendly, our children loved her and our driver was fantastic, took us to so many amazing places we would never have found!
Thanks for your comments. Flies can be a nuisance in the area at this time of year. We have sprays in the house and an electric fly killer. It is also a good idea to light a candle when you are eating. We dont spray outside because we dont want to kill the amazing moths and fireflies that visit.
Bathrooms and kitchen scheduled for updates in 2020. At the time of building these were the best fittings we could get locally but there are a few more options now.
Magnifique séjour, vue superbe sur Budugul
Belle résidence, en bois bien équipé. La route pour si rendre en en mauvaise état mais une fois monter la vue sur le lac Bratan et Budugul est magnifique. Les chambres sont très jolie.
Lovely house and staff above busy village
This is a very lovely home with beautiful views and a loving supportive staff. Paul, the owner is also very responsive and helpful. In August we were sometimes enveloped in cool clouds, with wood and paper so damp that we couldn’t get a fire going in the stove—despite a lot of experience with making wood stove fires at home. This made for quite a different—wear a jacket—experience than our usual hot Bali beach holidays. The WiFi wasn’t completely stable— so rather than watching Netflix, we watched movies from Paul’s large DVD collection under the deliciously comfy blankets!
We enjoyed our stay.
Thank you Zita for your kind comments. Sorry you couldn't get the fire going - Kadek usually finds a way, but I have to confess I sometimes struggle. Dry kindling is the answer - I must make sure we always have plenty in.
Sorry about the WiFi. In low cloud, the antenna might have been affected. We should have fibre optic broadband and streaming TV in the next couple of months, since this has recently become available.
This well-appointed villa is located among a dozen other wooden houses in the Lake District of central Bali. It directly overlooks Lake Beratan at Bedugul where one of the island's most important TEMPLES is located. This is the one that appears on all the holiday programs and tourist images of Bali. As well as visiting the temple and the famous MARKET, you can take BOATS out on the lake.
Right in the milddle of Bali, the villa is about one hour's drive from the airport and within one hour of everywhere else in Bali (Ubud, Seminyak, Lovina, Sanur, Nusa Dua etc.). The air is fresh and sometimes cool (5-10 degrees cooler at night) - an ideal alternative to the steamy beach resorts.
Why not take a two-centre holiday with a week here and a week in our other villa at Tumbuk Bayuh (property 58274)? Bedugul is famous for year-round fruit, vegetable and spice-growing. Get supplies direct from Kadek, our housekeeper or visit the bustling MARKETS.
Bedugul also has BOTANICAL GARDENS, RAIN FOREST TREKKING, spectacular secluded waterfalls and Munduk eco-resort.
North Bali BEACH resorts, DOLPHIN watching, snorkelling and diving are at Lovina (50 mins). The regional centre of Singaraja (40 mins) has shopping, MUSEUMS and old COLONIAL BUILDINGS, small pier with restaurants and children's play area.
TRANSPORT - if you don't already have a car/driver, we can arrange this for you, or scooter hire if you prefer. Scooters are a good option for local trips around the lakes. Car with driver is a bit more expensive here than in the rest of Bali - about GBP15-25 per day (inc. petrol) depending how far you want to go.
Kadek the housekeeper can arrange a car and driver or scooters for you. If you dont have long, using a driver is the best option as they can take you directly to the sites, which are not always easy to find - Bali roads are difficult to negotiate.
