Overview

About the property

Traditional 2 bedroom cottage in beautiful rural location. Newly modernised.

Originally built in the mid 1800's as a gatekeeper's cottage, South Lodge is now a cosy 2 bedroomed cottage on the edge of the small village of Ringford. The cottage has recently been modernised and extended and now includes a sitting room with wood burning stove, a delightful sunroom, large kitchen/dining room and newly fitted bathroom. There is a double bedroom with a king size oak bed and a further twin bedroom. Patio doors lead to the secluded sunny garden which has a small lawn, lots of shrubs and a barbeque. There are lovely walks right from the front door and a very popular tea room just along the road.

The village of Ringford gives easy access to the local beaches, horse riding, many places of historic interest, the Galloway hills and of course the vibrant town of Kirkcudbright (4 miles). Kirkcudbright is well known for its artistic connections, popular galleries and independent shops. There is an extensive programme of entertainment throughout the year which includes the Jazz Festival, the Summer Festivities, the Arts and Crafts Trail and the Kirkcudbright Tattoo to name but a few!

Notes:
South Lodge is a quaint cottage offering cosy accommodation in a comfortable "Scandi" style. The Lodge is situated in a beautiful part of Scotland that is often by-passed as people head for the Highlands. This area offers a taste of the Highlands in miniature with the Galloway hills just 30 minutes drive away. More gentle walks start right from the doorstep and the whole area is a walkers paradise. There are also lovely safe sandy beaches if you want to bring your bucket and spade! Dumfries and Galloway has a number of stunning gardens open to the public and is also well known for birdwatching - the Solway Firth is the winter home for thousands of migratory birds. There is much to do in this quiet corner of Scotland - from walking, cycling, fishing, golfing, sight seeing or just sitting in the garden with a good book enjoying the peace and quiet. Do come and experience it for yourselves!

Brilliant week in a lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is in a quiet location and was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. Very comfortable, good facilities and lovely inside. Ideally located for many good dog walks in Galloway Forest, Kirkcudbright, Newton Stewart etc. Thanks to Patsy for making us feel so welcome and for the tea & cake on arrival. We will certainly be coming back.

well Sited in Ringford

  • 4 of 5

Cottage is Well equipped and cosy. Warm and comfortable bed.

Well sited for touring the area. Well equipped and very comfortable. Owner very helpful and welcoming. Welcome pack gratefully received. Very dog friendly, but Only suggested improvement is more fencing to enclose the garden. Our ageing spaniels were fine, but would have been restless in their prime! Will recommend to friends.

Fishmonger in Kirkcudbright a delight. (As is the Polar Bites shop next door. Recommend the seafood platter, but it is not small!).

Butchers in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Newtownstewart all worth frequenting! 'Home' bakeries excellent.

Gardens at Logan, Castle Kennedy, glenwhan and Threave all lovely.

Also visited Dundrennan Abbey and Sweetheart Abbey and mill. Historic Scotland staff very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Concession rate for English Heritage members too.

Forestry sits with activity centres and walks very good. Red Kite feeding station worth a visit. Quite a spectacle.

Weather not brilliant for this week, but not particularly wet, apart from second and last day. Didn't detract from the beauty of the area.

Beaches excellent all over the area, but favourites at Rockcliffe, Sandy Hills and Brighouse Bay.

Really restful week, not our first in the area and we will return. A relaxing and restful week.

Very comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Very comfortable. Just about everything we needed. We were blessed with the good weather so made use of the outside seating. My husband had a couple of good bike rides. We visited the coast at Kippford and Rockcliffe and enjoyed the lovely coastal scenery.

Lovely comfortable pretty cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful comfortable stay at South Lodge. The hosts were extremely welcoming and made sure we had everything (and more than) we needed!! They responded to us very quickly when we contacted them with questions. The cottage is beautiful - everything very new, spacious and clean. Perfect location for us and our dog with lots of interesting walks and places to visit, all easily accessible from Ringford. There is also a fabulous artisan bakery in Castle Douglas (Earth's Crust) selling real bread and with tasty nutritious vegan options for lunch. Highly recommended. We plan to stay again!

Out and About

Galloway is known as “Scotland in miniature” and has something for everyone. The area is great for hill and coastal walking, fishing, golf and cycling. The ancient town of Kirkcudbright, a Royal Burgh since 1455, is historically very interesting and has a ruined castle, working harbour, museum and attractive High Street. There are also a number of independent shops and cafes. The town is known as “The Artist’s Town” having been home to EA Hornel, Jessie M King, EA Taylor and their friends in the last century. There are regular summer exhibitions and two permanent art galleries in the town. There is also a comprehensive programme of events throughout the spring and summer. (Link to Kirkcudbright summer festivities).

There are numerous gardens and places of interest within easy reach, including Threave and Logan Botanical Gardens.

You will find local information , maps and guides in the lodge to help you plan your stay.
