Excellent Owner and Property - Wonderful Location to visit Abruzzo
Finding a place in a foreign country is always unnerving. Finding a place in a small out of the way town in a Province in Italy that does not get the normal tourist traffic was simply a shot in the dark. But we wanted to visit and stay in an authentic town in the Abruzzo area since that is the place where both sides of my family originated. I searched through VRBO and found Victor Romano’s place – 3 bedrooms and two baths with a top floor balcony. Victor said that it had some stairs, but even my older cousin (76 years old), after complaining during the climb up to the third floor, was in awe of the view off the patio (balcony). The balcony is very large (12 x 30?) and gives a glimpse of the mountains (10,000 feet high) that surround Sulmona. The view is beyond words. And this greets you every day on the awakening and when you arrive home for the evening.
Victor is the best host that I’ve ever rented from. He lives in the building from time to time but never bothers you. He instantly appears when you have a question or need something. He was a perfect gentleman – even carrying our luggage up the staircase for us. The layout is beautifully done and Victor spared no expense in the accoutrements. The kitchen is very nicely laid out (and with a dishwasher). He showed us how to make coffee and then we enjoyed a stimulating philosophical debate on politics and the world events. Victor is fluent in several languages and made us feel very much at home. His recommendations were fabulous both in Sulmona and into the smaller surrounding hill towns that we visited. This apartment allows your rental vehicle to become a local resident for the week thereby providing a wonderful parking area for no charge.
The bathrooms were clean and the showers fabulous. The beds were comfortable and queen sized in the two main bedrooms – two twins in the third bedroom. There is a perfect little nook/loft on the lower of the two floors that becomes a great office space for planning or just browsing the next days’ events. The living space is split between two floors with two bedrooms on the lower floor and one on the upper. The kitchen is on the upper floor and the living room on the lower. This makes for a very nice setup when traveling in a small group as we were – four of us – two couples.
The location in town is absolutely spot on for an easy walk to main street and the local shops restaurants and traveling to other smaller hilltop villages and towns.
Delightful flat, delightful host, delightful town
Lovely apartment, beautifully furnished and cleverly crafted, in the perfect location just off the main square in this breautiful, characterful town at the heart of gorgeous and dramatic countryside, with an absolutely delightful and super- helpful host who loves Sulmona but also knows the wider world having lived/worked in Sevilla, Brussels and London. We had a wonderful week here, and will be back
Beautiful City, Lovely Accommodations
IT's taken far too long to sit down to write this review! First things first: Victor is a true gentleman, a knowledgeable guide, a generous host and simply a terrific guy. He went out of his way to make our stay in Sulmona memorable. We'll cherish forever the lovely wine and cheese (excellent local wine & cheese laced with Abruzzese truffle oil) receptions he held on his roof-top terrace with those striking views of the surrounding mountains. His apartments are beautifully restored, very comfortable and centrally located. Sulmona is a true gem and the people of Sulmona among the most charming & gracious I've ever encountered. My wife, daughter and I will return to Sulmona (again and again, I hope) and this "convent conversion" will be our first choice of accommodation. Ci vediamo, Victor!
Thank you very much for these wonderful words. Sulmona is indeed a special place. We are doing our best to make sure that our guests have a great experience.
Victor's apartments are ideally located in the centre of this beautiful town. Spotlessly clean and very well furnished this is the ideal location for exploring the beautiful region of Abruzzo. Victor was most helpful and welcomed us with a lovely apperitivo on his beautiful terrace. I highly recommend
Incredible Stay in Sulmona
We stayed in the third floor apartment for three nights in September. I was traveling with my parents and sister. The unit is beautiful, spacious, has modern appliances and was a very comfortable fit for the four of us. The pictures on the site were accurate, the kitchen had everything we needed to make breakfast two of the days we were there (with fresh ingredients from local markets), and there was a great (little) balcony to peer out and get a sense for the sounds and sights of Sulmona.
Victor (the owner) was fantastic. Upon arrival he was still getting the unit ready after a group had a late check-out. We went to the visitor center, and upon returning to the apartment he invited us up to his terrace for a bottle of montepulciano wine (from the Abruzzo region) and some hors d'oeuvre. He gave a great glimpse (literally and figuratively) of what it was like to be settled in Sulmona.
He gave us great suggestions for how to spend our time, and recommended we eat at Ristorante Clemente our first night. If you go - eat at Ristorante Clemente your first night!
On our trip we went to Rome, Florence Venice and the Amalfi Coast. All were wonderful and memorable and special. But our time in Sulmona was different. It's an incredibly beautiful city with very few tourists and we felt our experience there was much more authentic of the true Italy.
Victor was a wonderful host and provided a beautiful, reasonably priced place for us to stay! You should consider doing the same!
We stayed here for a week during our holiday to Italy. The apartment is tastefully decorated and very spacious and has wifi throughout .The owner is very friendly and welcoming and was on hand to give us recommendations on places to visit and restaurants to dine in.Overall it was a fantastic place to stay and we will definitely return.
