Bordanoost - stunning sea views on the most northerly isle of the British Isles
average rating of 5.0 based on 1 reviews

Lovely location, well presented.

  • 5 of 5

With the property set in its own grounds but very close to Haroldswick Bay there are lovely views on all sides particularly onto the shore and sea beyond. It was lovely to wake up in the morning and look straight out onto the bay with sun streaming in though the windows. In the evening the sunsets at the rear of the property were spectacular. We experienced very nice weather during our stay but the very well heated rooms with the option of an open fire in the sitting room would make the stay very cosy whatever the weather.

Entering the property into a large hallway made the removal of outer clothes and footwear very easy.

The large kitchen / diner is well appointed and has lovely views as you prepare meals and wash up, but there is a dish washer.

The sitting room is well appointed and we appreciated the reference books for identifying birds, flowers, etc. There is a tv and iPod player which we hardly used.

We used the two bedrooms overlooking the bay and it was very pleasant to have a bath in one of the rooms after long walks.

Haroldswick is in a beautiful part of Unst with a lovely cafe, heritage centre and boat haven all close by. Further afield there are lovely beaches and walks on the cliffs to appreciate the wild life.

Thoroughly recommend to anyone wishing to stay in the far north of Shetland.

Unst is the most northernly island in Britain. It is thought to be the first foot-fall of Vikings in the North Atlantic. There are the remains of at least 60 longhouses, the highest density of rural Viking sites anywhere, including Scandinavia. Haroldswick, like all of Shetland, is rich in the remains of our past. Guests who are interested in the heritage of the area can explore our own ice house. Our Viking enthusiasts can walk a few hundred yards from Bordanoost to visit The Skidbladner (replica Gokstad ship), and the Viking Longhouse reconstruction. Both provide a focal point for visitors and residents from which they can explore Unst’s Viking heritage. The Unst Heritage Centre and the Unst Boat Haven also display a range of exhibitions and information.

There are also the remains of the houses own ‘ice house’ dating back from when the island had a thriving fishing industry. It is an ideal spot for enjoying the wonderful spectacle of the Northern Lights. The house is within a minutes walking distance of the ‘Unst Boat Haven’, ‘Unst Heritage Centre’, ‘Victoria’s Tea Rooms’, the ‘Viking Longship Project’ are within walking distance providing easy access for those with limited walking ability. Hermaness Nature Reserve is also in easy reach of the accommodation. Road access for transport is of a good standard.

You can of course choose to visit Britain’s most northerly churches, castle and lighthouse.
