About Gunnar Erickson
We are retired Americans enjoying life in Mexico since 2004. We divide our time between Barra de Potosi and San Miguel de Allende.
Gunnar Erickson purchased this Villa in 2006
Why Gunnar Erickson chose Barra de Potosí
Barra de Potosi sits on The Last Best Beach. The area is close to an international airport but unspoiled by commercialization. The village and seafront restaurants are just a short walk away. The endless beach is pure sand. Pelicans dive all day long in the gentle surf. It simply is a tropical paradise. If you should choose to leave the infinity pool, you might take a few steps to the beach, take a swim, cast a line if you fish, take a long walk, enjoy a sunset, collect shells, visit a local beachfront restaurant for some fresh seafood and a cold one. In the evening, stroll into the village for some of the best tacos and quesadillas we have enjoyed in Mexico, for a price that will please your pocketbook. (We often ask ourselves, why shop and cook when you can eat like this?)
What makes this Villa unique
Living on the Last Best Beach drew us to Playa Blanca, living next to the village makes it a lot more fun than just beach. We love to eat out out any of the village cenadurias (dinner eateries). We are particularly crazy about Dona Emy's pork tacos and Dona Chayo's Quesadillas. Walking to the nearby lagoon and taking a kayak ride at sunrise to witness the hundreds of birds waking up for the day - incredible! (You can go later too and it is still great, we know a good bird guide who can take you in her boat.) Taking time to scan for the winter humpback whales is restful until you spot the spout! Or take a tour of the bay with one of our certified whales watching guides and see the area from the sea. If you like real and local, this is a place to get it.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
The place is absolutely gorgeous! The pool was perfect - walks along the beach and swimming in the
Ocean was amazing!
As close to perfect as it gets....
Villa Maderas on the Sendas del Mar property is absolutely stunning. My siblings, niece and I had the great fortune to spend over a week on the property and enjoyed every minute. The photos on the website are beautiful, but cannot capture how amazing it really is. The house is impeccably designed and decorated, well maintained and has everything one could possibly need, with a few extras. We never used the air conditioning in the bedrooms, but it's a nice option to have. We took advantage of the full kitchen for many breakfasts and a few dinners and had a great time cooking for ourselves and enjoying each others company.
The pool is delightful and just steps from the great room. I loved swimming in the ocean for a while, then coming back to the pool to enjoy the water (and that view!) a bit more. The property is close to the village and lagoon for any shopping, dining or bird watching. There are two other casitas on the property and we had the fortune to see those as well. While they are smaller than the main house, they are certainly not lacking in amenities or charm. Every inch of this property is beautiful and well curated. Tito and Carmen, our hosts, are fantastic people and are happy to help arrange adventures. Tito helped us hire a cab for the day to explore La Barrita, Petetlan and the ruins at La Chole. We spent some hours exploring and then came back to the beautiful house and amazing pool to cool off and relax. Perhaps the best part is the new friends you may meet. We were staying on the property at the same time as a wonderful Canadian family and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. And did I mention falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to the light of the sunrise playing on the ocean? They say nothing is perfect and while that may be true, Villa Maderas is about as close as it gets.
Delighted that you and your family enjoyed our favorite paradise! Our staff fell in love with all of you too!

I loved the large spaces and the view of the ocean. The kitchen was so much fun to cook in! And very well stocked with everything a cook would need.
The pool was such a nice treat - loved the hammock as well.
I would love to come back again next year.
Glad you liked the hammock! One of the best places to chill out and enjoy that amazing view for sure! Come back soon!

A Rare Opportunity in Paradise
This beautifully located and magnificently maintained 2 air conditioned bedroom home is rarely available for rent.
Situated on the water in the tiny fishing village of Bara de Potosi minutes from Zihuetanejo International Airport, Villa Madras provided my wife and I with the exact vacation we were seeking.
From preparing our lunch or dinner in the well equipped kitchen to strolling down the beach for lunch at one of the informal beach front restaurants (emramadas) or dinner at one of the slightly more "formal" beachfront restaurants a short taxi ride from our front door, we found this home and the surrounding area simply delightful in every way.
A quick dip in the ocean or a few laps in the pool just outside the floor to ceiling glass doors of the magnificent great room to jumping into the poolside hammock, truly paradise.
A bird and floral laden lagoon with available guides sits 5 minutes down the beach for those looking for a wonderful, low key adventure.
For the more adventurous, there are fishing boats and guides available.
Our hosts provided a most complete little guide book pointing us to everything from the best massage on the beach to the recently discovered archeological site located a short ride from the house.
My absolute favorite, going to sleep with the sound of real ocean waves breaking on the shore just steps from my bedroom window.
Looking for real relaxation with a bit of adventure thrown in, then Villa Madras is your vacation home away from home.
Our only regret was departure, but we took heart from the knowledge that we might someday be fortunate enough to return to this slice of paradise.
We had an amazing time and loved the area. Great restaurants, great food and a beautiful scenery.
Barra de Potosi is a tiny traditional Mexican Fishing Village where life is lived in the slow lane and residents are friendly and enjoy meeting visitors. A major lagoon offers great kayaking, or boat tours with amazing bird life, including Roseate Spoonbills, egrets, herons, migratory white pelicans and many more species of waterfowl. Kayaking at sunrise, a must do! Humpback whales frolic offshore in the winter and taking a boat trip to look for them includes a trip to small offshore islands where one can see the red-billed tropic birds and brown boobies galore. Take a hike to Turtle Beach to enjoy a wild, practically untouched beach where olive ridley turtles come to nest. Visit the turtle camp or ask to have them come to you and for a donation you will release the latest hatchlings at sunset in front of Villa Maderas. Dine at one of the many beachfront restaurants with a cold one and watch all the locals play in the waves. Swim from the beach in front of the Villa or just sit back and enjoy the unrivaled beauty of the area.
