About the property

The Brewhouse - a house that sleeps 6 guests in 3 bedrooms

Gold 4 Star rated property, 'The Brewhouse' is a delightful 160 year old Victorian character building, tastefully converted from an inn several years ago. Awarded the 4 star gold award by Visit England for four consecutive years, this lovely property which has been freshly redecorated throughout for the 2018 season, offers very comfortable, centrally-heated, well appointed and stylish all year round accommodation. Enjoying both sea and down-land views, the spacious property is arranged over two floors and includes a ground floor bedroom and shower room/wc for easy access.

The Brewhouse is particularly ideal for those wishing to explore the lovely island on foot, as access to miles of wonderful downland walks including St. Catherines and St. Boniface Down are only a few steps from your door. Beautiful coastal walks are also close by. A few minutes stroll will take you to the seafront and the new yacht haven, where the crescent shaped beach is sand and shingle and from where boat/fishing trips can be arranged and "catch of the day" can be bought. The town's flat green Bowls club is also only three minutes walk away. Dubbed 'England's Madeira' by the Victorians, Ventnor has become an increasingly desirable holiday destination over recent years, with all areas of the island being easy accessible by car & public transport.

The centre of Ventnor offers character Victorian buildings, an esplanade, a main shopping street with quality antique shops, a post office and two supermarkets, parks and gardens, a heritage museum, Bonchurch pottery as well as the famous botanical gardens. There is also an excellent choice of pubs, restaurants, wine bars and eateries some of which have live music during the evenings. Please visit our google map page to view the location of The Brewhouse.

Places of interest include the Isle of Wight Coastal Visitors Centre, St. Boniface Church, the Rew Down Local Nature Reserve and St. Boniface Down, which is the highest point on the Isle of Wight and also where Ventnor's Radar Station is situated, St. Catherine's lighthouse (guided tours), Isle of Wight donkey sanctuary, Blackgang Chine theme park & Steephill Cove. The pretty tourist villages of Old Shanklin and Godshill are also close by. The Isle of Wight coastal path is a 65 mile (105km) long trail around the island, which follows the coastline as closely as possible. There are also many miles of cycle routes in the island, including off-road mountain biking.

Entertainment, sport and leisure are varied and include Cricket grounds with the Cricket Academy, golf courses, Pitch & Putt courses, tennis courts and a variety of children's playgrounds & nearby riding stables. The Isle of Wight is famous for its music festivals and Ventnor is the Jazz and Blues capital of the Island.

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week at The Brewhouse. The cottage had a well stocked kitchen with plenty of glasses and cookware. It was very homely (maybe too many nic nacs, but I guess that’s a personal thing). The addition of fans in bedrooms 2 and 3 is needed (we had to buy them as neither child slept the first night). The master bedroom has a ceiling fan..but the bed is very hard.

Ventnor is lovely but the location of the Brewhouse stopped us walking to the seafront as it is just ridiculously steep (I have a disabled daughter so couldn’t contemplate attempting the walk). My partner made the walk and even he said it was a very hard walk, both ways.

There was a welcome hamper on arrival which was lovely. The bathroom and shower room were stocked with shower gels and shampoo. There was plenty of hot water and we enjoyed our stay at the Brewhouse.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Brewhouse and found the property well equipped and that you appreciated the many extras that we provide to make your stay comfortable. As you are aware this summer so far has been exceptionally hot and fans in the bedrooms have never been a requirement before (although there is a big ceiling fan in the main bedroom). This may be something we may need to consider in the future if English summers continue to improve. We are sorry that you and your disabled daughter were unable to manage the lovely walk down to the seafront due to the steepness of the hills. Ventnor is built on a hill (in fact it is often compared to the Amalfi coast of Italy). As such most of the properties in the town are built on hills and have lovely sea views. However we are lucky in that there is a frequent bus service down to Ventnor town from outside The Brewhouse. You would then only have the short walk down The Cascade to reach the beach. Thank you for choosing Island Holiday Homes and The Brewhouse and we would love to welcome you back in the future.

Great home from home...missing it already

As we were walking around the island but wished to be based in one place the cottage was ideal. The layout of the rooms was great as my parents were able to have the downstairs bedroom and shower room.

Everything you might need is there and we look forward to returning.

Good location easy access.

Some may be disappointed about proximity of industrial estate and recycle bins. Can be noisey at times. Not suitable for infirm and steep hill. Cosy, warm bolthole, well decorated and furnished, needed nothing.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your glowing review of The Brewhouse and we are delighted with your extremely high score, 100% in all sections is great. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found the cottage comfortable, everything to your liking and wanting for nothing. Just to clarify for the sake of future guests your comment that the cottage is unsuitable for the infirm, we assume you are referring to the walk up the hill to the property ? (certainly not a problem if you have a car or are catching the bus but agree it could be a problem if you are walking with mobility problems) rather than meaning the cottage itself?. As you know The Brewhouse has an easilly accessible downstairs twin bedroom, shower room (cubicle fitted with grab rails) and toilet so it is very suitable for elderly guests or those with reduced mobility as lots of our former guests have confirmed. Thank you once more for choosing The Brewhouse for your holiday and we would love to welcome you back sometime in the future. Best Wishes Island Holiday Homes

Location

What the South Wight has to offer:

The South of the Isle of Wight incorporates some of the most exciting coastline from long stretches of beach with hidden fossils and exposed dinosaur footprints, to rugged cliff tops with exhilarating views and historical monuments and pretty villages steeped in history, the inspiration for artists and authors old and new.

You must visit

BlackGang Chine is a must for all the family with a fantastic variety of activities for all the family to spend a great day out. Themed areas like Frontierland where you can play Cowboys and Indians in a full sized Cowboy Town, and rides like Waterforce where you can choose the fast 'overflows', or the scary 'plug-hole' - you'll have to see it and experience it to believe it!

Attractions

Superbly situated beside the sparkling waters of Sandown Bay, the twin resorts of Sandown and Shanklin have delighted generations of holiday-makers for over 150 years. Along Culver Parade you'll find tennis, bowls, GoKarting, crazy golf, a pitch and putt course, the Tiger Sanctuary and Dinosaur Isle Museum. At the southern end of town the Heights Health and Leisure Base has indoor swimming pools and further inland is a fine 18 hole golf course.

With its charming thatch-roofed cottages and winding main street lined with tearooms, Godshill is the quintessential English Village. Traveling South to Wroxall there's the Donkey Sanctuary and Appledurcombe House now offering Owl and Falconry displays. Visit Chale Green Deli and Coffee shop and on to the Southern most tip of the Island St Catherine's with its ancient Pepperpot. Ventnor Botanic Garden provides a lovely walk and then lunch at their very successful café.

Walking

There are coastal paths around the Island and this section features the Isle of Wight's famous chines. Whale Chine is the most spectacular in a series of Chines along this stretch of coastline. Devil's Chimney provides an exciting walk through enchanted woodland down to the beach; Chale Bay is stunning; Wealdon Beds which have yielded fossilized remains of dinosaurs. With features like St Catherine's Lighthouse many feel this section offers the best walking and views of the entire Isle of Wight.

Beach Life

Sandown and Shanklin on the south-east coast share a wide crescent of golden sand, with safe swimming, water sports and a range of bars, pubs and cafés. The southern stretch, below Shanklin Chine, is the quietest and most attractive.

Ventnor has a wonderful Mediterranean light and, like Sandown and Shanklin, an enviable sunshine record. Steephill Cove is its prettiest beach, a peaceful little bay with a good beach café. Reach it via the coastal footpath from the Botanic Gardens, or La Falaise car park in Ventnor.

Places to eat

Try the local seafood, in particular crab, lobster, haddock dishes. The vast majority of pubs are highly geared up for food and usually the portions are on the large side. Fresh crab in particular can be tasty from beachside cafe's and can also be purchased from the fisherman at seafood huts selling direct, two places spring to mind: Ventnor Fresh Crab Beach Hut and a fisherman's house at Steephill Cove next to the café'.
