About Tom Crotty

We built this house and lived in it for a number of years until commitments to our 5 children's activities forced us to relocate to the adjoining city of Galway (approx 50 km). We loved living here and intend to move back when our kids are grown.

Why Tom Crotty chose County Clare

The setting is unique. It overlooks Galway Bay and access to the beach is through a little wooden gate at the bottom of the garden. The house is built in local stone and is very cosy, with open fireplaces in the sitting room and two of the bedrooms. It is situated in spectacular Burren landscape and is just outside the village of Ballyvaughan, with its lovely pubs and restaurants. .

What makes this house unique

We loved the setting from the word go. People felt we would not get planning permission but we designed a sympathetic low level stone house which is cut into the hillside and blends into the landscape. The peace and tranquility of the location, the comfort of the house, the direct beach access, and the proximity to Ballyvaughan & Galway are the benefits that people will enjoy in our opinion.

Lovely house in a perfect setting

We had a wonderful time staying in this house and are very happy that we found it.

The location is fantastic - the panoramic view of Galway Bay from the house is breathtaking. And it is incredible having the sea right at the bottom of the garden.

The house is in an ideal position for exploring the Burren. Walks around the area at this time of year are fabulous, the wind so fresh that after a minute one was totally refreshed. (Do remember to bring wet weather equipment for walks in wintertime).

The house is warm and comfortable. It was heaven to lie or sit in front of the fire with a glass of wine and a book. The owners sourced some local turf for us and were altogether extremely helpful and friendly.

We have rented many holiday homes in different parts of Ireland and we thought this one was terrific value – I would say at least 40% below the cost of similar houses we’ve rented in the past. Incredibly, there was no breakage deposit, no cleaning charge or charge for linen. Most unusual and very refreshing. There is a charge for utilities but the owners allowed a certain amount of usage free and, despite being winter, we did not exceed this limit.

This is a lovely holiday home in a very beautiful part of Ireland and we highly recommend it. We will be returning.

What a lovely place to stay

The description of the house was spot on. The location was perfect, so close to the sea, such nice views. The rooms were large, three bedrooms with sea views, the house was clean and well equipped. Just a few little items could do with attention but nothing to detract from our enjoyment of the holiday. Tom met us at the property and talked us through the property and the equipment, he was very welcoming and friendly and helpful.

The weather was excellent we were very lucky the only rain we saw was on the Friday evening before our departure on the Saturday.

We are keen bird watchers and had a good variety of birds on the beach and in the bay in front of the property.

We ate at two pubs in the village of Ballyvaughan just 5 mins drive from the house - Logues Lodge hotel and Hylands Hotel, both good variety on the menu and very good food. We also ate at the Soda Parlour - a café in Ballyvaughan which was quaint and the food is very good.

We did quite a few of the local walks around the Burren - several books at the property that list the walks - easy to follow. Our two sons hired bikes at Doolin and did one of the 4 bike routes- again clearly sign posted.

Pitch and putt available at Doolin and near the Cliffs of Mohar - very good courses and reasonably priced. The cliffs are worth a visit too especially during Apr, May June when the seabirds are nesting. Good visitor centre.

The beach at Fanore is nice and sandy more enjoyable because of the wonderful weather. We visited Galway which is a lovely city, quite difficult to get in and out of currently as a lot of road works in the city centre.

We would highly recommend this holiday home and this area of the country.

Very comfortable cottage in a fabulous location

We stayed at this cottage for a week during August 2013 and had a fabulous stay here. The owner, Tom, was there to greet us when we arrived and was very helpful and friendly. The booking and meet and greet process was very easy and smooth. The cottage has everything you could wish for with lots of space for everybody. The proximity to the beach is its real asset, and our children aged 3,4 and 10 spent every moment there that they could. The beach has a good mix of sand, shingle and dunes so plenty to explore. There are some amazing sunsets to be seen too. There is lots to see in the local area, we visited the Cliffs of Moher, Galway, The Burren perfumery and tooks lots of scenic drives and walks. We look forward to returning here again soon.

A Peaceful Rest

This home is as wonderful as the couple, Tom & Patricia, who own it! I showed up frazzled and exhausted from my crazy life in the United States, to a cheerful greeting and a peaceful, beautiful setting. Really, the view is quite lovely as was the home. It had all the comforts I needed and Tom took the time to make sure I knew how everything worked and couldn't have been more helpful in providing information about the area for any day trips I may have wanted to take. Rain or shine, I can honestly say, it was the best part of my 6 week stay in Europe, as I was able to get my batteries recharged so I could enjoy the rest of my trip. Patricia even checked in with me during the week to see if there was anything I needed. So nice! I've not had many opportunities to travel abroad so it was comforting to know I could call Patricia and Tom if I had any questions. Do yourself a favor if you're planning a trip to Ireland, rent this home for a very enjoyable part of your stay. If I get the chance to return to this lovely country, it will again be my first stop.

Excellent property

We were lucky enough to stay in this property 6th-20th July 2013 and enjoyed two full weeks of dawn to dusk sunshine (unheard of in Ireland).

The house is very close to Bishops Quarter Beach, which can be accessed by walking down to the bottom of the garden and then across the dunes. The beach itself is not ideal for sun-bathing as it is quite stoney in parts however, from a child and dog perspective, it is perfect as there are plenty of rock pools and dunes to play in. That said, there are many sandy beaches close by and the seaside resort of Lahinch is amazing.

The house itself is great and has 5 bedrooms but as there was only myself, my Husband and our dogs staying we did not use all of the facilities but those we did use, served our purpose just fine. Again, having said that, because of the weather, we spent very little time inside, barbecued almost every night whilst watching the sun go down over Galway Bay and with a glass of wine in hand, this was superb. It must be remembered however, that the house is in rural Ireland so if it rains, be prepared to travel for entertainment.

The house is close to Ballyvaughan village and the distance is walkable but the road is narrow and windy so best to drive. The village has a well stocked supermarket, is quaint and has a couple of nice bars and restaurants but do not expect large town services. Kinvarra which is about 10 minutes drive, is a larger town with a great supermarket, nice farmers market and lovely coffee shops. I come from the North of Ireland and I found the prices quite shocking, particularly in gift shops however, Galway City is fantastic and the Burren area in general is spectacular, but I found the best value for almost everything was to be had in Ennis, which is beautiful with lovely narrow streets and is not as touristy, which is reflected in the prices (in my opinion).

The house is in a very tranquil setting and even though the beach was busy, there was no noise. I cannot emphasise enough how quiet this location is and with the sunny weather it was amazing.

We ate out a couple of times and the restauants we went to included Monks at Ballyvaghan pier which was great and sitting outside made it extra special.

The booking process for this holiday was flawless and Tom Crotty and his family were at the house when we arrived. Throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble for Tom, even coming across from Galway to open up when I locked us out! Great time had by all!

Lovely Seaside Cottage

We stayed at this cottage for a week in late September 2012. The owners were very prompt when contacted via email and extremely helpful with helping us with our trip-planning even prior to our arrival. When we arrived at the cottage, everything was perfectly clean and tidy, with lots of nice extras like throw blankets for chilly nights, plenty of books to borrow, and tourist pamphlets for restaurants and attractions in the area. We had a group of 6 and were very comfortable - we probably could have slept another 4 people without a problem. The beach is a 2-minute walk through a lovely backyard path, and even though it was too late in the season to swim, the view from the beach is fantastic and you can see all the way to Connemara on a clear day. The nearby village of Ballyvaughan has everything you could need - a church, post office, pub, good restaurants, market, gift shops, farmer's market, etc. This is the perfect spot for exploring the West of Ireland - we day-tripped to Connemara, Galway, Bunratty, Cashel, Loop Head, Adare, and it was only a 3-hour drive back to Dublin. I cannot recommend this rental enough - the location, the owners, the cottage itself are all perfection!
