We spent a 1 week stay at villa La Bougainville and really loved it! the garden and the new pool are amazing, we were so happy to find many outdoor furnitures and spaces, the house is small but fully equipped, the wi fi connection worked very well which is not always the case when you rent a house in the country side. thanks to the owners for the beautiful welcome basket.
Delightful villa tucked away down a small quiet lane surrounded by olive trees and the sound of birds singing! Large secure gates open to reveal a compact villa in an absolutely huge garden. There are front and rear terraces, with a large amount of seating and dining areas. It is perfect for a couple or a small family. The kids will love the free space. The house is compact and stylish, and the owner has thoughtfully supplied all the utensils and plates you could possibly need. We bought from the cheap food market and cooked a number of different dishes and everything needed was in the kitchen.
If you are a keen swimmer you will love the quiet beach which is a short walk away. There was only ever a few locals there whenever I went. The water is clear and calm. Fontane Bianche a short drive away has the full tourist facilities if you fancy that instead. Which we tried and enjoyed too.
We used it as a base to explore the eastern side of the island, for which it is perfectly located, but beware of the distances involved when travelling west on 'a' roads. Agrigento is a long drive, but more than worth the effort, the Valley of the Temples is magnificent. Noto, Modica and Ragusa are essential visits as are Taormina and the Villa Romana del Casale. I have not even mentioned Ortygia or the myriad other places that we visited, and recommend the villa and the area without reservation.
On arrival Stephanie will brief you on what is available locally and provide maps etc, which is extremely helpful in buying food and finding your way around.
We rented this charming little house for 2 weeks between last October and November. We would like to thank the owners for the quality of their welcome, it has been such a nice suprise to discover fresh fruits, wine, juices and Sicilian pastries in the kitchen the day of our arrival. The house is located in a quiet area and it has been ideal to have rest, thanks to the 2 terraces. The huge garden was very well kept, the gardener came every 3 days. Shops and restaurants are 15 mn' drive and it is has been very pleasant to discover the daily market on the island of Ortigia, to avoid the traffic we found that it was better to go there early in the morning. We would like to come back in june 2013!
We very much enjoyed our stay in this villa and our arrival and departure was very efficiently managed. It is as portrayed in the photographs and description and was clean and well equipped for a comfortable holiday. It is located up a quiet lane and there are a number of reasonable restaurants in the near vicinity. The gardens are well tended by the discreet owner who will visit a couple of times during the week to water the lawns and flowers. The rear garden is much bigger than we anticipated and there is a choice of comfortable outdoor furniture to choose from. The small beach near the property is almost totally frequented by local people and is o.k for a swim, but it does not have any sunbeds/umbrellas and there are no cafe facilities here. A better option is to drive to nearby (10 kilometres or so) Fontane Bianche beach which is a large beach with beds/umbrellas and restaurants. The supermarket is about a 10 minute drive away and easy to locate. Driving into Ortigia is an experience but even we managed to negotiate a visit to the market and city by day. For evening visits we chose to call a taxi so that we could enjoy the food and wine. Fares are 20 euros each way which although pricey we felt it was worth the peace of mind not having to drive at night. The taxi company whose number was supplied by the villa were excellent and punctual Younger more intrepid drivers may not fear the night time driving which to our minds was crazy - cars approaching from all sides and no apparent rules for right of way!! Very typical of Italian driving style. In summary this is a good choice to make if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to enjoy the lovely Ortigia.
