La Umbria is a charming old converted farmhouse, set on a gently terraced hillside amidst groves of fragrant citrus trees, in a wide and beautiful valley in the Sierra de Columbares. Although it is peaceful and isolated, it is only a twenty minute drive into the heart of the exciting town of Murcia, and within easy reach of the broad sandy beaches of the Costa Cálida, with one of the most hospitable climates in all the Mediterranean. There is plenty to do in the area, with several golf courses nearby, and lovely countryside for hiking and excursions.

The house is set in very pleasant enclosed hillside gardens at the end of a little-travelled paved road. There are lovely views over undulating countryside and the Sierra de Columbares Mountains. The English-style gardens are full of fruit trees, mainly citrus, and there are two covered and two open terraces around the house, for enjoyable al fresco dining and relaxing. One of the terraces is devoted to rose bushes which flower throughout the summer, and the others to English style herbaceous borders, which also run alongside the large swimming pool. There is ample garden furniture, sun loungers, and parasols.

La Umbria has a large comfortable sitting room with a separate dining area, delightfully and tastefully furnished in a mixture of styles, with decor from Sri Lanka. There is a well-equipped kitchen which almost completely opens on one side onto a terrace, and on the other to a vine-covered terrace. There are two double bedrooms each with an en suite shower room with a wc, a library/TV room, and a separate shower room. Adjacent to the main house is the annexe, with two further double bedrooms and one shower room with a wc. All the bedrooms and the sitting room open through French windows onto the paved terrace and patio which surround the house.

What makes this villa unique

The owner has restored and decorated the house tastefully and simply in harmony with the stunning setting. He is a passionate gardener and has taught the caretaker couple to look after the grounds beautifully.

The converted farmhouse is furnished like a main home with a huge collection of books and CDs, and attractive artwork. The owner is a very good cook and has supplied the kitchen with all the mod cons. The interior is very comfortable with plenty of seating in the living room and good facilities.

Notes:
The house is in a nature reserve where bird life is protected, and is surrounded by attractive pine covered countryside with good walking tracks. The sea, with numerous beaches, is a half hour drive. A friendly cat visits when the house is occupied. It stays outdoors during the night. Guests are not obliged to feed it.

A quiet escape

We've recently returned from a lovely holiday at this villa near Murcia Spain.

The location was not too far from the airport and an easy drive through the beautiful mountains with which the villa is situated. The road to the villa requires a bit of careful driving to navigate but it is very quiet - we only came across one other vehicle in the week we were

We found the property was more beautiful and the scenery more stunning than the pictures show. The house itself is very spacious allowing for quiet time spent alone while also offering ample space to come together as a group. The kitchen is very well equipped and we were able to replicate many favourite family dishes with ease.

The outside space was incredible. Many different areas with seating to help you follow the sun, or shade, around the property throughout the day. These spaces also offered various views of the beautiful mountain scenery surrounding the property. A real favourite pastime was picking lemons and oranges to juice! An absolute delight to wake up in the morning to lovely fresh orange juice!

The property itself is very well looked afterward and the gardens are clearly a passion of its owner. Wish we had been there to see the whole place well in bloom!

The owner was very helpful prior to our stay and while we were there. He answered any and all questions we had regarding the area and local amenities. He was easy to get ahold of if we had any problems and clearly eager for us to enjoy his property as much as he does.

We would happily return here as it provided a great quiet spot to escape from reality.

The property is located only a short drive from the regional capital of Murcia, founded in the 9th century by the Moorish ruler of Córdoba. Murcia is a pleasant city, with plenty of activities, good restaurants, and an impressive 14th-15th century Castilian Gothic cathedral.

This mountainous area is known as the Sierra de Columbares, and is a nature reserve named after the turtle doves which migrate here in the summer. The lunar landscape is quite magical and dotted with hilltop villages. The area around Murcia is a fertile plain rich in gardens and orchards (mainly citrus fruit).

Apart from the beautiful town of Murcia, these places are worth a visit:

Caravaca de la Cruz (80km) hilltop town in a wonderful setting dominated by a medieval castle and a beautiful church.

Calaspera (90km) 14th century town with rice fields thanks to the four rivers that cross it.

The Mediterranean at the Costa Cálida is within easy reach at the Mar Menor, the largest natural lagoon in the world, enclosed by the 22km sandbar known as La Manga. Beaches are a half hour drive away.
