Overview

About the property

Nestled in one of the listed "most beautiful villages in France", overlooking the vineyards and river, next to the Abbaye Chateau de Camon, our newly renovated gite combines the charm of a traditional stone house with a contemporary, spacious home, stylishly furnished and tastefully equipped to provide a perfect base for a holiday in this stunning area.

There is a lovely feeling of space and light the moment you enter the house, with plenty of room for everyone to relax in and areas dedicated to cosy or more formal eating. We really want you to feel as if you are on holiday here - but "at home" at the same time, so we have tried to provide a balance between relaxing comfort and a sense of luxury.

There is a very well equipped kitchen for eating in with style and everything you need for a picnic is also provided if you want to make the most of the good weather at home or on a day out.

There is the added bonus of underfloor heating throughout the house, three very attractive bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There are lovely views from inside the house or you can go through the french doors on to the pretty balcony where you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of local wine. Steps lead you down to a large, pretty gravelled area where you can eat, read or sunbathe or just soak up the peace. Outside dining can be done at the large garden table seating up to 8, or there is a more relaxed garden seating area for more casual eating. There is a barbecue for you to use and sun loungers and parasols are available.

Although Camon is a tranquil village you are within walking distance of both an excellent restaurant at the Abbaye-Chateau and a delightful little cafe offering home-made local produce in the summer season. The peaceful surroundings here offer a real opportunity to escape if you want to. Take a stroll down to the gentle river at the end of our lane or discover the village Rose Garden or walk up past the Abbaye and down through the pretty back streets and archways.

1 minute from our doorway is "La Voie Verte". This was once the old railway track but has now been converted in to a lovely 38km foot and cycle path, also suitable for Horse-riding and VTC, taking you across the countryside through surrounding villages and the medieval town of Mirepoix.

Camon is very well-placed. Whether you want to spend your time winding down or fill your days exploring the huge range of fascinating places nearby, you are surrounded by amazing landscapes in all directions.

There is the beautiful Lac de Montbel with it's two beaches about 15 minutes away, where you can spend days swimming, walking, horse riding, eating or enjoying the water-sports on offer. Or there is a smaller but pretty Lake at Puivert, overlooked by it's Castle, which provides a great day out of swimming, sunbathing, eating and playing.

Whether you want to drive, cycle or walk the roads and pathways lead you through a varied landscape; views of the snow-capped Pyrenees, soft, rolling hills, pretty villages, sunflower fields and shaded woods or dramatic gorges, mountain and forest walks a little further afield. You can hire bikes nearby if you wish.

For those of you wanting to have a sight-seeing holiday, there are so many interesting places to visit like the famous Cite de Carcassonne with the Canal du Midi nearby. Discover the fascinating history of the spectacular Cathare Castles of Montsegur, Puivert, Roquefixade or Foix, to name but a few. Explore the Pre-historic paintings in the caves at Niaux, visit the Pre-historic Park, or the Church at Vals which is built in to the rocks or the beautiful local medieval town of Mirepoix. There are lively, bustling markets held nearby all year round and at night-time during July and August. If you enjoy good wine, we are surrounded by very respected wine-producing vineyards with an abundance of caves where you can go tasting the local produce.

There are many water activities offered not far away for the more courageous, like white-water-rafting or canyoning or Adventure Parks where you can swing through the trees. For those who love ski-ing, our nearest ski-resort with 21 runs is just 50 minutes away if you want to take a winter break. Day trips to Andorra or the Mediterranean are well worth the exciting drive.

On a practical note, you have many options with your sleeping arrangements. The Super-king beds can be converted in to 2 singles and vice versa. There is also a comfortable sofa bed in the lounge, so the house can sleep 8 people if necessary. In addition we have a cot for a baby. There are stair-gates provided, if necessary, both for the stairs inside the house and the steps down in to the garden so that you can feel secure if you have children with you.

Towels and bed-linen are provided for you, free of charge.

We have tried to think of everything that will make your stay a pleasure. You will be greeted by a hamper of local produce to enjoy. You should find everything you need here to eat in or picnic out in style. You have your own washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, drying-line and iron etc. There is a variety of books, maps and board-games to borrow. Beach towels are available and a range of children's games, books and activities to use if you wish. You may borrow dvds and cds to play on the smart television, which is also tuned in to Movie Channels as well as French TV channels. There is Wifi available.

You have plenty of room for parking. There are several sun-chairs, a barbecue, a dining table and chairs, picnic tables and parasols for you to use to make outdoor living and eating more comfortable.

About Elizabeth Franklin

We moved to France 12 years ago and have never had any regrets. I was a Primary School Music and English Teacher and Colin a Heating Engineer. Having worked really hard for 25 years, we felt ready for a change. Having renovated the house we currently live in in 2005 we decided we would like another project to keep us inspired. So we bought a complete ruin in Camon, which everyone joked only a mad Englishman would buy! But 11 years later, after a lot of hard work and excitement and attention to detail, we have finally finished our project and it feels like a lovely, spacious, stylish home. Our wish is that you can just walk in and feel immediately at home - with all the comforts you require plus an added sense of luxury. Surrounded by beautiful views and charming places to visit you will have no trouble relaxing here and we will take great pleasure in helping you have a wonderful stay.

Why Elizabeth Franklin chose Camon

There was something about our house at Camon which seemed to speak to us the moment we saw it. Whilst it was completely ramshackle, (only partially roofed, walls tumbling in, no floors or glass in the windows) you could see what a pretty house it had once been and we felt it still had a heart at it's centre. We knew it would take a lot of dedication, imagination and money to restore it but we felt completely committed and have never stopped dreaming of the day when it would be lived in again. And here we are....

Comfortable and roomy gite in Camon, a beautiful village in the Ariege district

  • 5 of 5

The “ gite” in Camon is comfortable and roomy and Liz is a wonderful host. She has thought of everything you could need to make for a pleasant stay. She was always available to answer our questions and was happy to give good suggestions about places to visit.

During our stay in May, the rose bushes that adorn the village buildings were covered in buds. We could only imagine how, in another 10 days or so, Camon would live up to its description in the guide books as “ the most beautiful village in the south of a France”. But even without the flowers in bloom, this village offered traditional French charm and tranquility, and even a craft beer pub down the road in a neighbouring village. The restaurant at L’Abbaye de Camon is a must to visit for a special meal.

Thank you, Liz, for providing a wonderful base for us to enjoy an amazing experience in this beautiful part of France.

Owner's Response: Thank you for that lovely review David. We really enjoyed having you all to stay. You were great fun and easy and very appreciative , which always makes it a such a pleasure for us. We're so glad you enjoyed your meal at the Abbaye Chateau - it is a special place. And the Brasserie de Quercorb is a great place to spend an evening, especially when they have musical events or Food Night -- so it's good to know you made the most of some of the great things on offer here.

Very comfortable gite in beautiful Camon

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely few days in Camon with my husband and two sons. Liz & Colin have created a stunning, modern home, very light and airy, beautifully clean and well equipped. Lots to do in the area. We particularly enjoyed:

Walking and running on the voie verte from just outside the gite - would be great to cycle too.

Castle at Carcassone - very impressive, good on a Sunday when it’s very quiet.

Hiking up Mont D’Olme in the snow - stunning, shame the ski lifts had closed

The lake at Montbel for kayaking

Pretty Mirepoix and the bustling Monday market

We would recommend it 100% - thank you!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Lisa. You were lovely guests. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Camon and were able to make the most of some of the great things to do near by. I'm ashamed to say I have never hiked up Monts D'Olmes ( although Colin has skied down it a few time!s) so I will make sure I take our dog up there for a run in the very near future! You're welcome back anytime.

Charming holidays in the countryside

  • 5 of 5

Searching for a place to stay close to Mirepoix because of the Swing Festival, we found your beautiful house in Camon. It's so comfortible and convenient, we were more than happy with it. Not only your house, but also the surrounding is outstanding. The beautiful village of Camon invited us for strolls through the small town and on the old railway track even further with nice views into the landscape. So thanks for everything, the friendly wellcome you gave us, Elisabeth, the nice talks with Colin working next door and all those nice things you prepared for us in the house.

Location

Car: recommended

There are many opportunities for walking, cycling, wine-tasting, water sports, sightseeing, visiting local markets and beautiful drives from our house. You are in the middle of such a beautiful area, you will never be bored if you like the great outdoors. A visit to Andorra or the Mediterranean is possible on a day trip, or you can discover the many historical Cathar Castles in the area. If you come in the winter you could combine a holiday with ski-ing or visiting the Thermal Baths at Ax-les-Thermes or Rennes Les Bains.
