About Scott P Mayo

My name is Vivian Mayo and my husband of 40 years is Scott P Mayo. Scott and I are long time Alaskans with many tales to tell! (You may be interested in reading our survival story! www.lastfrontiermagazine ) I am proud to call myself a lifelong Alaskan! I was born in Anchorage Alaska and moved to Cantwell in 1964. Scott came to Alaska from the Midwest in 1970. He fell in love with the freedom of Alaska the moment he stepped off the plane. Scott and I married in 1975 and Have raised three wonderful children here in Cantwell. Scott worked 30 years for the State Highway Department retiring in 2008. 30 years of plowing snow was enough for him! Now let me tell you about the fun stuff...snowmobiling, ice fishing, winter and summer camping, hunting, fly fishing, four wheeling, gold dredging, we do it all and more. Scott and I are getting a little older and wider but we try not to let that stop us. Surrounded by the natural beauty and bounty of the area we feel blessed to fill our freezer with moose meat and pick blueberries for canning each fall.

Scott P Mayo purchased this cabin in 1987

Why Scott P Mayo chose Cantwell

Scott and I have lived in a few different locations here in Cantwell. As a child I lived in the old town of Cantwell in a small trailer house. After Scott and I married we lived in a small log cabin without electricity or indoor plumbing. We had a hand pump for water. After we had the kids Scott bought me a gasoline wash machine! I had to pump three 5 gallon bucket of water to fill that washer up! I was one strong chick! In 1985 we sold our small cabin and decided to build a bigger home for our growing family. Scott with the help of some of our helpful neighbors and friends put the roof on the main cabin just before the snow flew in the winter of 1987. We have been modernizing and making improvements for the last 30 years. Even though Cantwell didn't have commercial power or TV until the mid-80s we have now caught up with the rest of the world. Modern technology is a wonderful thing but it is easy to forget to "log on"when you're surrounded by Alaska's beauty. We hope you enjoy the area as much as we do

What makes this cabin unique

We live a simple life here. Coffee in the morning sitting on the porch swing listening to the birds and swatting a mosquito or two 😉. With Mountain view's, wildlife and the abundance Alaska has to offer we have almost everything we need right outside our door. Literally right outside our door! We have had moose (Matilda ,eating my flowers), caribou (eating my lawn) ,fox and a couple of young bears come through over the years. Scott and I hope you relax and enjoy your stay in our neck of the woods. And don't forget, 30 minutes away you have access to great restaurants, drinking establishments, gift shops, coffee shops, ice cream shop and all the outdoor activities and sightseeing Denali National park has to offer.

Notes:
Visitors have the option of partaking in our local activities...sightseeing, hiking, fishing and summer tours of a Iditarod mushers dog yard. Or traveling 30 minutes north to be right in the middle of one of the busiest tourist areas in Alaska with great restaurants, bars, gift shops, river rafting, air sightseeing and much more there is never a dull moment. I would recommend Mile 229 restaurant, Creekside restaurant and The Salmon Bake. There are many more restaurants in the area to try and they're all pretty decent. Black Diamond golf course and resort in Healy 40 miles away, has a nine hole golf course and miniature golf. They also have wagon ride dining. If you're interested in an ATV ride, ATV Adventures has a number of tours available. They have even added a zip line ride to the mix!

The Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cabin, location and Vivian and Scott. Our stay could not have been more perfect. The cabin is very spacious, super super clean and had top of the line appliances and bedding (the beds were awesome!). We had two couples in the cabin and felt we had room for a couple more. This was the best way to stay near the park with another couple, lots of room to be together and plenty of privacy. The cabin is a short distance from the park and great hiking. There is even a view of Mt. Denali right from the cabin. We never used the giant TV but were pleasantly surprised of the speed of the internet for being so far out into god's country. We saw Scott and Vivian a few times during our stay and LOVED hearing their story about their near death experience in the Alaskan winter. You have to hear the story if you stay, it's remarkable, also the stories of growing up in northern Alaska. When we come back again this is the place where we will stay for sure!

Terrific Denali Visit

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to stay when visiting Denali! We had a total of three couples and the three bedroom, two bath cabin worked perfectly. It was clean, well stocked and labeled, and very welcoming. The cabin itself is beautiful inside and out. It was our base to visit Denali National Park. We got to visit a couple of great local restaurants and while out walking one evening in the neighborhood, we spotted a momma moose with two calves.

It was a five star stay!

Loved Our Stay

  • 5 of 5

Scott and Viv were so welcoming! We definitely felt at home. The cabin was spacious, clean

and the beds were comfortable. Having long daylight wasn't noticeable with the darkening curtains. We had everything that we needed for our stay! The location was really nice to Denali. We would highly recommend their place!

Just what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a comfortable well - equipped home for our family of 6, 3 adult couples. We were delighted with the home... it's decor gave us the real sense of being in Alaska and all the amenities were satisfactory. The location to Denali Natl Park was important, and this was an easy 30 minute drive. Vivian and Scott were so helpful from our first inquiry until our departure. We highly recommend this home. Loved being right at the Denali Highway... we made a quick run on our last morning to see if the Denali Mountain peaks were showing ... to our delight they were!

The cabin was great! All you need and more!

  • 5 of 5

This place is special. It is such a nice layout with good beds. The appliances are all brand new and top quality. I only wish we could have stayed longer...three nights was not long enough to experience all Denali has to offer. It was nice to be in authentic Alaska instead of a tourist trap. We would definitely book here again.

Excellent accommodations!

  • 5 of 5

Clean, updated, serene location. Hosts could not have been nicer! Stocked with everything we needed for our stay - loved it!

Everything on one floor - open floor plan for living, dining, kitchen. We ate on deck and were treated to yellow warblers and gray jays dining with us. Lovely location, great for our family group going to Denali.
