Why Gary Whidden chose Johnson City
The river property came into my mother’s family in the 1890’s. My great grandfather built the family homestead. In 1901 (pre-dam) a flood came and damaged the home. With mules and logs they moved the 3,000 square foot, 2 story home across the creek and placed it on higher ground. Before the dam was built in the mid 1940’s, the river would sometimes look like a creek, at other times it would rise and come out its 50 foot banks. In the winter, the river would freeze and my great grandparents would cut squares of ice from the river and bury it in their home for later use. Before the bridge, there was a natural shelf that allowed the horse and buggies to cross the river in front of the cabins. The ground was farmed until I received it in 2003. My mother was raised on the property, until she married my father in 1947 and moved to Florida. We vacationed here every year, so I have always loved this place. I wanted a place of my own but hated the idea of having it sit empty most of the time. I am in the rental business in Florida so I decided to build something that could be rented when we are not able to be here. At that time, there were no buildings on the property so I was able to start from scratch. I really like the character of horse barns and thought, why not build one that could house people. So, in 2004, we built the cabins and it has been a great adventure! This past winter, we completed our retirement cabin. The cabin has three bedrooms, three baths, and an apartment on the lower level. We hope you choose us for your lodging in East Tennessee. We know you will enjoy it. - Gary and Patty Whidden

We had a great time at this unique cabin. It's located in a beautiful setting, and we loved watching the river from the hugebzck porch.
Top notch cabin. Coming back for sure!
We loved our stay!
Our family enjoyed our stay so much that we booked another weekend while there!
Great spot, super nice and clean.
This is a great cabin. Has all the creature comfort of home plus the fire pit and everything else you would expect from a mountain cabin.
Beautiful Views! Lots of Room!
The minute we walked into the cabin, we felt welcomed and comfortable. This .cabin had everything we needed for a long weekend. The kitchen, dining and living room area provided plenty of space for 5 of us to spread out but still feel like we were together. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large and roomy. We loved this house! The hot tub, wrap around deck and river were bonuses. We would love to book again!
What a Place! Best of the Best!
We stayed at the cabin over the Christmas holiday and it turned out to be one of the BEST Christmases ever! And that's for real, not just something to say. The cabin added so much to our holidays it's hard to describe. The cabin was beautifully decorated for Christmas, including a tree! It was absolutely wonderful having the fireplace. We hosted Christmas dinner at the cabin, and with the large dining table and kitchen it was no trouble at all. Perfect really. On the warmer days we could enjoy the river from the master bedroom balcony, and we even left the window cracked at night so we could listen to the river. The whole area near the cabin is scenic, peaceful and beautiful.
More practically, the cabin was completely and fully outfitted with EVERYTHING we needed. We didn't have to go out and buy a single thing, other than food. And that's a first, because we usually have to buy a few things when staying at a rental due to it either not being available, or not operational. Everything at the cabin was fully functional. The bed in the master bedroom is AWESOME, and my husband is in love with it. My Dad is in love with the coffee they had there. Wish we knew what kind it was! Another friend loved the Ninja coffeemaker.
I could go on and on far more than the character limitation will allow. This cabin is very special and very well taken care of, and obviously loved. It played a big part in our wonderful, memorable Christmas of 2018! Cherry on top: Lights projected into the trees along the river! Wow. What a wonderful surprise!
We travel a lot, and stay in a lot of rentals, including Select Registry B&Bs, and, this cabin is the best of the best!
We like to provide suggestions in reviews if we notice any, and for this cabin there really aren't any, but I will mention three trivial items:
1. The cabin sleeps at least six people, and there were only three wine glasses. This was a bit of a nuisance, especially for the holidays. But we made a game of it, who gets the wine glass!
2. Everything at the cabin was of quality. We enjoyed using everything at the cabin, and had no complaints about quality of items -- except for the toilet paper. The toilet paper was of the very subpar quality, and it was very noticeable in comparison to everything else.
3. It would be nice to have a box of Kleenex in the living room or somewhere.
Trivialities aside, we love this cabin and would return any chance we got! What a Place!
