Hocko Pohorje is a very picturesque hamlet in the Pohorje region, situated just outside the countryside village of Hoce and 10km from the City of Maribor. The house is a short walk from Hoce Village, with fantastic views over the countryside and woodland. The house is very spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room for a large family of 6-8 people.. The ground floor has a big double bedroom, which can comfortably fit an extra single bed or cot. There is a twin bed room with bunk beds and also a bathroom with large shower enclosure and WC. From the hallway, there is a big utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer, also plenty of space for sports, hiking and ski equipment. The first floor has a big open plan space with the kitchen, dining room and living room. All the windows overlook the garden and the furnished sunny terrace is a really lovely spot to take your drinks whilst looking over the views of the garden, the trees and woodland. Also on the first floor, from the entrance hallway is a big double bedroom with built in wardrobes and views over the garden. There is also full bathroom with bath and shower enclosure and a separate WC. There is a large sunny conservatory overlooking the garden with comfortable indoor/outdoor furniture and a table tennis table. The garden is beautiful, with huge grassed area, flowers and variety of trees. We have outdoor dining table and chairs, but guests are welcome to take the conservatory furniture outside onto the garden patio. There is also a big sunshade available. The house is served only by fresh mountain water from high up on the Pohorje, the stream passes by our road and continues to the village. You can stroll to the village where there is a local restaurant and small bar at the entrance to Hocko Pohorje, serving traditional Slovenian dishes. There is also a Supermarket and Pizzeria. Hoce village has other local restaurants, cafes and 2 supermarkets. Maribor City Centre is very cosmopolitan with it's beautiful historic buildings, café culture and interesting shops. it's just a 10-15 minute drive right into the Centre. In Summer there is a great open air swimming pool/s and gardens which is situated along the river Drava. Summer activites such as biking, hiking, horse riding and adrenalin sports are all available from the Pohorje sports centre, just situated outside of the Old Maribor City Area towards the Pohorje. For Winter sports, all three Ski Stations can be reached by road from Hoce village. You can drive up to Bolfenk and Areh Ski Stations and Ski Schools or alternatively drive into Maribor to the Ski Arena (Radvanje, lower station) for the Gondola and many other facilities. Plenty of parking available, there is a free bus service running between Bolfenk and Areh. There is fantastic family skiing at Pohorje with beautiful trails and of course the famous Ladies World Cup Skiing event in Maribor every January.
Maribor is, as the capital of Štajerska, the second largest City in the Country. At the same time Maribor is pleasantly small and set in the wonderful natural surroundings of Pohorje on the one side and wine growing hills on the other, with the river Drava wending its way through it.
The rich wine tradition of the oldest vine in the world, the throb of the city with its thriving cultural history, the location between wine growing hills and green Pohorje and the diverse possibilities for exploring, recreation, relaxation, entertainment and meetings will convince you that Maribor has a heart and soul and that the inhabitants of Maribor are excellent hosts.
Maribor with Pohorje on one side and wine growing hills on the other offers unforgettable experiences with breathtaking views.
The old town: Go for a walk along the banks of the river Drava and through the lively streets and squares, where history and tradition mix with dynamism and the contemporary. The city streets all lead to one of the most beautiful town parks in Slovenia. Climb up Piramida and Kalvarija, the town's wine growing hills that have marvellous views. And go down in the wine underworld to one of the oldest and largest wine cellars in Europe. We are an English couple with 3 children, originally from Brighton in East Sussex, England, we are presently living and working in Portugal. We chose to visit Slovenia in 2006, loved it so much that we bought our house! We hope to spend a lot more time there in future years, however in the meantime we visit for winter holidays and through Homeaway, have been offering our house for holiday rentals since May 2010 for others to enjoy!
Nick and Jackie Agar purchased this house in 2006
We love walking and outdoor activites, we love ski-ing and snow, we also love mountains and the beautiful scenery. Hocko Pohorje is an idyllic location just a 10 minute drive from the Cosmpolitan City Centre of Maribor. It is a really beautiful spot where you can totally unwind after a days activities. The house has a really special feel, warm and inviting, the garden is really huge and the views are simply stunning. Summer or Winter it offers so much. It really is a different world and always hard to leave!
Something special about being here has to be the location, beautiful scenery and tranquility. 1km away are the villages of Hoce and lower Hoce where there are a variety of restaurants, supermarkets and all other ameneties. The Ski Resort of Mariborsko Pohorje is only a 15 minute drive away. There are many people who have not yet discovered Slovenia and are missing out on the amazing climate in spring and summer and what Slovenia has to offer.
Everything was perfect and we were absolutely content.
Thank you very much, we will come back to you for our next stay in Pohorjie.
We had a great time here. The house was ideal for a family of four and could comfortably accommodate more. It's very spacious, bigger than it appears in the pictures. The garden is huge and there's a little gate in the hedge where you can see the mountain stream flow past. It was very clean, the towels and bedding are good quality and there's just about everything you need in the kitchen.
The location is great. There are plenty of walks nearby and it's close to Maribor and a relatively easy drive to nearby towns and cities. Ptuj is beautiful and Varazdin in Croatia is an absolute gem of a town. it's very cheap too and we had a meal and drinks for four for under £25. Ljubljana is about 90 minutes away and must be the loveliest capital city in Europe as well as one of the friendliest. (Apart from the police who let me off with a warning but not before threatening a fine of 250 Euros for a very minor error!) Graz in Austria is certainly worth a visit as well. We intended to visit Zagreb, the lakes in Northern Croatia and to pop into Hungary but may leave that for next time.
The owners were helpful right from the initial enquiries to when we were there and answered any number of questions.
Very minor issues: there isn't a visitor comments book, so do some research into things to do before you go. The third bedroom has bunk beds only.
I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this home. We really hope to come again in 2015. Thank you so much Nick and Jackie.
Although the weather was a bit wet and cloudy for most of our stay, we had a great time. The children weren't able to make the most of the garden but it was lovely, with lot of fruit trees, and a great size for playing in.
The house is very well equipped and the table tennis table was a great hit - perfect for a rainy hour or so.
The house is in a great location - quiet but with easy access to everything you could want. We visited Ptuj which was a lovely, sleepy town and a couple of the thermal spas nearby. Unfortuantely, our children weren't old enough for the Adrenaline Bike Park so we hope to return again one day to give that a go and for some of the more challenging cycling on offer in the area.
The Miles Family.
We have just returned from our visit to your house and had a fantastic time! The house was really warm, clean and comfortable. There was plenty of space for our two families and we found it great having the open plan living rooms where we relaxed together in the evening, cooking and chatting with a few glasses of wine of course!
As we were visiting Maribor for a winter family ski holiday we found the utility room a really great space, it was perfect for all our skis, equipment and wet clothes.
The Pohorje ski slopes were just beautiful! Access to the slopes from the house was very easy and we found the resort perfect for families like ours with children. Everyone spoke English and were very friendly and helpful. We put the kids into ski school whilst the adults explored the slopes together. The kids had so much fun and didn't want to come away at end of the week!
Have to say your garden was amazing, so much space and it was perfect for the kids to play in!
Away from the skiing, we enjoyed exploring Maribor City, which we found very cosmopolitan, we even visited Graz in Austria for the day, as it was so close and a great opportunity for us.
We will be in touch to visit again.
Thanks again from the Hansen family (and friends).
The house was exactly as described, and in a lovely clean condition. It had a definite Austrian feel to the both the house and location and the views were fantastic.
Shops, attractions and restaurants were within easy reach.
We had such a great time we will be returning later on this year.
Lovely house, lovely location - definitely recommended.
Beautiful detached Family House, picturesque setting 500m above sea level in the Pohorje Foothills, idyllic location with fantastic scenery, quiet but not remote. Perfect place for walkers as there are so many trails, either on the Pohorje hills or surrounding countryside. Families who are keen on sports, horse-riding, cycling and skiing have many facilities at their disposal. In winter, Mariborsko Pohorje Ski Resort is open from mid December until the end of March. Exit Hocko Pohorje and turn left, then keep going up until you reach the resort, about 15-20 minutes drive. All the roads are kept in excellent condition during the winter, so it's simple to drive to all ski stations. You can also arrive at the main entrance of the resort where the Gondola is situated, by driving into Maribor (10 minutes). Here there are a number of cafes and other activities too. In the summer you can also visit the huge public outdoor pool and gardens in Maribor Centre, which is very close.
The house is situated in the beautiful village of Hocko Pohorje at the foot of the Pohorje mountain range, 10 minutes by car to the Arena and Bellevue ski stations at the Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort. Maribor city centre is also a 10 minute drive.
Golf: The golf course of Ptuj is really something special because of its varied terrain and several water hazards. The course spreads over an area of 50 ha and distinguishes itself especially because of greens and sheets of water. The river Studencnica and two lakes accompany 15 of 18 fields. The greens are at one with the old town centre and the authentic fauna and flora harmonises with Ptuj's natural environment.
