The Captains House is a magical 80 year old farmhouse, set 10 mins up from the sea. A magnificent hideaway which is approached along a 500 metre bumpy track (for which some may prefer the use of a 4x4 vehicle)
An amazing restoration project - the interior is quirky and conveys the lively and intriguing life of the interior designer owner - mixing an eclectic blend of artworks, collectables, objet d'art, original Ralph Lauren and Armani publicity photography, African wall-hangings and an eccentric chandelier made from ouzo bottles - all wonderfully colourful !
This house is a true solar powered Eco-home, which is self sustaining. Some care is required in respecting the power resources available from the Sun, as such we have limited our use of high consumption electrical appliances ( so no dishwasher !)
Entering into the farmhouse style kitchen which leads through to the main studio living area, French windows open onto the covered terrace with large dining table and spectacular views down the hill to the sea below. The infinity edged swimming pool is accessed by steps leading to an upper terrace and beyond this the guesthouse, containing two of the four ensuite double bedrooms ( which can also be configured as twins)
The Captains House provides complete peace, privacy, within a stunning location - the perfect escape !
Zakynthos: Zakynthos is a beautiful Ionian island, next door to Kefalonia. It is very green in comparison to other Greek islands, benefiting from long hot summers and wet winters. The Northern end of the island is totally unspoilt, with fantastic scenery of rocky coastlines, turquoise blue seas, monastery ruins and phenomenal views, making it the perfect location for walking, painting, sunsets, snorkelling, sailing and total relaxation. Agios Nicolaos is in the beautiful and completely unspoiled area of Skinari. There are fewer beaches in this area and most of them are pebbles rather than sand. Nearby are the famous Blue caves and Shipwreck beach which you can get to by boat. The area has a few fantastic local Tavernas dotted around the hillside, great food and beautiful views. If it’s traditional Greece you are after, visit the nearby harbour of Agios Nikolaos and sit at the water’s edge next to colourful, bobbing fishing boats in a simple Greek taverna.
The Peligoni Club & Agios Nicholas Port: The Captain's House is within 10 minutes drive of the Peligoni Club which offers a wide variety of water sports, sailing, beauty treatments, tennis court, restaurant, bar and much more !!!
The house is about 10 minutes drive from the small port of Agios Nicholas where you while find supermarkets, tavernas, coffee bar, telephones and the beach. You can also catch the ferry from the port to Kefalonia our neighbouring island or take a trip to Shipwreck Bay or the Blue Caves.
Zakynthos Town: A visit to Zakynthos town is a must, although almost totally destroyed in the earthquake of 1953 the town has been sensitively rebuilt with many of its beautiful Venetian buildings replicated. Start at the harbour and wander back through the chaotic maze of streets where fishmongers and colourful fruit and vegetable shops sit comfortably with boutiques, banks, bakeries and cafes. On the outskirts of Zakynthos there is a water park and a trip to the far south to Keri is worth a visit for wonderful views of Marathonissi island also the national park of the Gerakas peninsula is recommended, it is worth mentioning however that these areas are always very busy in the peak summer months.
Perfect escape for our family on our fourth return visit to this rural hideaway
the charming house would be ideal for total relax whit a beautiful panorama but the unpleasant surprises were many:
the unpaved road is easy accessible only by off-road cars; the cleaning was very lacking everywhere; the beautiful terrace was off-limits cause many dormices rounded all about the terrace leaving excrements inside and outside the house; the lamps were not working for half and the other had weak light; no television, no DVD player, the dishwasher it is but it's broken... it's a pity but the captain's house would require a lot more maintenance...
I just want to thank David for creating such a wonderful home, and for sharing it with others. It gave me a chance to daydream about my own restoration project to come. And thank you to both David and Avril for going the extra miles to take care of us and introduce us to the neighbourhood. We all appreciated the genuine hospitality.
Situated in the mountainous north of the beautiful island of Zakynthos.
The Captain's House is also within easy reach of the unspoilt beaches of Porta Vromi and Makris Gialos. The family resort of Alykes with its long sandy beaches is a short drive away and offers water sports, restaurants, supermarkets, night life and cash machines.
The Captain's House is the perfect base to explore this delightful island. Ideal for complete relaxation, walking and boat trips to the Blue Caves, Shipwreck Cove and Kefalonia (you can even hire your own boat to explore the hidden little coves with their azure clear waters} The Captain's House offers all the charm of a quiet retreat and complete privacy
Direct flights to the island May-Oct.
