About the property

The property is laid out over 2 floors with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on each floor.

The beautiful large entrance hall has double doors opening to the impressive living area, with its exposed wooden beams and traditional log-burner in the corner. This spacious room is split between the lounge area at one end and the formal dining area at the other end. French doors open on to a large terrace, perfect for outdoor dining, with magnificent views for miles around, over-looking the roof-tops of the old town, across the valley to the new part of Aljezur. Steps lead down from this terrace to the pool-side terrace below.

The large kitchen features a wood-fired oven, plus an induction hob and conventional electric oven, a dishwasher, a beautiful white Belfast sink and grey granite work-tops. There are 2 pretty seating corners either side of the wood-fired oven, plus a central island which doubles as a breakfast bar. There’s an adjacent walk-in pantry.

Along the hallway, there is a pretty double bedroom, 2 bathrooms (both with full baths with shower attachments), a twin bedroom at the end on the hall and then the master bedroom off to the right. The master bedroom is very spacious and has 2 large windows capturing those panoramic views across the valley.

From the entrance hall, steps lead down to the lower floor, where there is a large twin bedroom with access to the lower BBQ terrace. Two more steps down there is a large bathroom with corner bath and an adjacent smaller shower room. There is another door out to the BBQ terrace at the end of the hall. Further down the hall are 2 bedrooms – a twin and a very large double – both with doors out to the pool-side terrace.

The pool measures 3 x 5 metres and is 1.2 – 1.3 metres deep and is heated. There is ample space to relax in this very private and tranquil spot that feels like a little tropical paradise with all the palms around and the Moorish feel to the whole area.

The market town of Aljezur is always bustling with people and attracts many surfers due to its proximity to a multitude of superb surfing beaches such as Arrifana, Monte Clerigo and Amoeiras, all just a short drive away. There are many cafes and restaurants down by the river which runs through the centre of the town, and the castle dominates the skyline at the top of the town. Situated right in the historic centre (but on a quiet lane), this is a truly unique property

About The Owner

With a view to escaping the grey winters of Northern Europe, we have just purchased this beautiful second home in the Algarve region. We are both hard working professionals, of British/Irish nationality, living in France. We have 4 grown up children (youngest born 2000) who we love to spend holiday time with. This house will be ideal for us and keep the kids keen to come and see us :). We may eventually retire to this house in years to come. We are keen to explore the region, walk the coastal paths, try out a canoe and watch our kids take to the surf.

Why The Owner chose Aljezur

We felt at home in Casa Velha from the outset - it's metre-thick walls and exposed beams are reminiscent of our French home and the spacious living/dining area will lend itself perfectly to family gatherings throughout the year. The 6 double bedrooms enable us to be there "en famille" and have friends join us. The large kitchen is the perfect place to cook with family and friends helping out; the numerous terraces mean that we will have space and not feel that we are all on top of one another. The pool, while not big enough to do lengths, is just right for cooling off on a warm afternoon. The terraces have the sun on them all morning but are shaded in the evening - just what you want of you are barbecuing on the terrace after a day on the beach.

What makes this house unique

This property has the charm of the old town without sacrificing the volumes of a modern build. We have unspoilt views across to the new town and the old Moorish castle behind us. While the old town has a lovely authentic feel to it, Aljezur has vibrant restaurants and bars and alongside the traditional Portuguese community there seems to have a young, international sporty/outdoor-sy community.

While the house sleeps 12 comfortably, the dining tables are ideally for 8 - the idea being that the children would eat before the adults. For 12 adults, a table extension is required - please contact the owners before arrival.

Aljezur is built below an old Moorish fort. The old town and new town are divided by a bridge over the Ribeiro d'Aljezur - the local market, by the bridge, is a great place to source fresh fruit, veg and fish; several cafés and restaurants can be found here too, one with the best custard tarts ! The old town has a converted mill transformed into new cafe/veggie restaurant/yoga studio just getting off the ground. There are several surf schools and hostels in the town. On the other side of the bridge, the new town has a modern Intermarché as well as a smaller Spar, a butcher, hairdresser, restaurants, bars, petrol stations as well as an active church with a weekly service.
