Spacious House, regional cuisine, 5 mins walk into town, 40 mins from Algarve
About Michaela Tulip-Mills
Having bought Monte da Quinta in the summer of 2002 with the intention of it becoming our holiday retreat, we found it increasingly hard to return from visits to the hustle and bustle of the UK. With much planning and determination, finally in the summer of 2005, we moved to Portugal.
Michaela Tulip-Mills purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2002
Why Michaela Tulip-Mills chose Castro Verde
Project managing the build and restoration of the farmhouses, we took inspiration from some of the fantastic accommodation we had stayed at within Europe. With our love for all things rustic, traditional and the ambience of the Casa de Campo “House of the Country” life style, Monte da Quinta started to evolve.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Monte da Quinta combines modern facilities and traditional architecture with an even balance between rural tourism, farming and a unique way of life. Centrally located within the lower Alentejo region with easier access to the Algarve and the western coast line. With our continuing success, we have settled into the landscape and lives of the local people very nicely. Thanks to the fantastic support and recommendations from many of our returning guests, we now have a viable business with visitors from all over the world.

Beautiful villa, perfect for a relaxing break.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Monte da Quinta, the property is set in an idyllic farm in a small Portuguese town. The villa is spacious, very well equipped and immaculately kept with a beautiful pool metres from the villa’s porch.
The owners of the villa were in the adjacent villa but did not intrude on our stay and offered (free) fresh eggs and tomatoes from their farm. They were friendly and welcoming and a great source of local knowledge.
The local town has a few good restaurants, cafes and a bakery and is walking distance from the villa. Beaches are an hour’s drive away, we also found a freshwater lake with a beach and lifeguards which was a refreshing change!
Hope to go back some time.
Monte da Quinta - A Little Bit of Paradise
Monte da Quinta is set down a very quiet country lane, just a ten minute walk from the picturesque small town of Castro Verda. It consists of two adjoining properties plus the owners' accommodation. We stayed in the smaller two bedroomed cottage, Casa Oliveira. What a delightful place! There are stunning views from every window and terraces on three sides all well equipped with comfortable chairs and loungers. The kitchen is extremely well equipped including a dishwasher although washing up was no chore admiring the lovely view of the town or watching the pigs snooze! There is a separate laundry room for both cottages. The two very comfortable bedrooms are both en suite. Everywhere is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. We chose Monte da Quinta for a week of peace, relaxation and a place to recharge the batteries and we were not disappointed! The grounds are full of olive and palm trees and beautiful shrub and the place is full of birdsong. There is also a small herb garden of which we made good use! There are plenty of places to sit and relax whether it be by the gorgeous pool, on the terraces, a very secluded shaded area or you could even try the hammocks. We enjoyed exploring the farm and feeding the animals. The owners, Michaela and Nigel, have made a fabulous job of renovating the farm and continue to use traditional methods. We loved having fresh eggs and honey and marmalade from their own bees. For more supplies, the town is easily accessible on foot. There are two supermarkets and a good selection of smaller shops and excellent restaurants. The Algarve is 40 minutes away by car and the nearest airport, Faro is just an hour's travel on an unbelievably quiet motorway! There are many attractions close by and our hosts had plenty of suggestions. Having the lovely Michaela and Nigel on hand is a real bonus for help and advice. They were the perfect hosts and not a bit intrusive. We had a fabulous week - the weather was perfect too - and we would recommend Monte da Quinta unreservedly.
Couldn't fault it - we're going back next year!
For us, the location was perfect - quiet and tranquil with a restful, relaxing and peaceful view yet near enough to walk into Castro Verde. The villa was spacious, cool and of a very high standard, well deserving of its descriptions of luxury accommodation. We loved the fact that the kitchen was generously equipped with plenty of everything and that there was a dishwasher - home from home! The views from every window in the villa were a joy. The bed was comfortable, the seating was comfortable - this is a rare occasion when my husband hasn't come home from holiday with a bad back because of the bed or seating in the holiday accommodation!
It's the first time that we've stayed anywhere abroad where the owners live on-site and this worked perfectly for us. Michaela and Nigel were helpful when needed yet unobtrusive - it was great to have their input for a special meal out for my husband's birthday and the best places to go for a couple of day trips out. Having said that, it was several days until we could tear ourselves away from the terrace of our villa and the immediate grounds and local town! The days when we did venture further afield were a great success due to Michaela and Nigel's input. We are not dog people but we enjoyed having Tiza around - she is a character in the nicest possible way! We also loved the pigs, goats, chickens and ponies; the orange trees - everything! As we've told family and friends at home, we couldn't fault it at all - and we do have high standards! Following on from the title of this review - we've asked for a week next year to be pencilled in for a return visit.
Thank your staying with at Monte da Quinta, we are very happy that you enjoyed your time here and were able to explore and try the local cuisine.
We are looking forward to welcoming you back in 2018, until then best regards, M
Birdwatching in Alentejan Paradise
This is the most beautiful and immaculately kept property we stay at in Portugal. We stayed twice this year, and try to visit every year. Michaela and Nigel are excellent hosts, and the cottage has everything you need. We walked to local restaurants and cafes, and recommend the new café next to the Turismo, where the owner is very welcoming, and speaks excellent English. Our favourite restaurants are Villa Italia and Market Verde. Although the birdwatching was better in April, we still managed to spot a good variety. Hope to return soon.
5 Star Accommodation
This 5 Star Villa was all we expected and wanted. It was spotlessly clean, very spacious and had everything we could want in self-catering accommodation. Michaela goes to great length with the detail to make people feel welcome, including a welcome pack. We asked for her to provide a Portuguese meal for us on the first night which was well presented and very tasteful. There was far more than we could eat so leftovers were eaten for lunch the following day! The kitchen was well equipped, as was the pool area, including a hammock for each villa! The views were stunning so sitting on the terrace of our villa drinking coffee enjoying the view was a must. We also particularly liked feeding the animals which included hens, pigs, a duck, goats and ponies. I'm sure they gained weight whilst we were there! We visited two of the many restaurants and cafes in town, both of which provided excellent meals. This is a villa we would love to stay at again. If you are not looking for a beach close by but just wish to enjoy a relaxing, comfortable villa with pools appropriate for adults and children this is the place to stay.
Tranquil luxurious cottage
Having stayed at another Alentejo holiday property the previous week that did not live up to the expectations set in the marketing material, it was a relief to arrive and find everything is the same high quality at Monte da Quinta.
My family has been holidaying at Monte da Quinta for 10 years. We like the fact the property is clean, smells wonderful, is well maintained and immaculate, well stocked and offers lots of little extras. Highly recommend this property to our friends and family.
5 minutes stroll into the center of town. Convenient facilities on your door step, shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. The farm offers space, quiet and relaxation. The Algarve and the stunning west coast are within an hour. Plenty to see and do with local vineyards, many outdoor activities and beautiful coast lines.
