While this beautiful cabin is not overlooking the Mississippi River, it does face westward to the New River, a tributary of the good old Moon River!

A Moon River View is both an exciting destination, and a relaxing getaway.

As you drive up to the large parking area, you'll know this is a very special place. With upper and lower decks on both the front and back of the lodge, there is always the perfect place to enjoy nature.

Sunsets to remember- The 2 decks on the front of the house have gorgeous layered, long range views of the mountains to the west. You'll want to make it a daily ritual to watch the sun set between the peaks.

There is plenty of space for busy families. The lodge has three levels, and you'll enter on the middle level. There, you'll find the library/music studio as well as the comfortable TV room. Also on this level are a full bathroom and two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed. This level also has a another surprise. On the secluded rear covered deck, a new Jacuzzi hot tub is ready to relax you.

As you ascend the stairs to the top level, you'll be thrilled with the high vaulted ceiling and log decor. The large, open great room has been professionally decorated and has an inviting sitting area surrounding a large gas fireplace, large flat screen TV with satellite, and a sound system. The tall windows on the front of the house open onto the upper deck and the long range views beyond, while the secluded rear deck features an outdoor dining area. You'll enjoy the sounds of nature as you cook on the large gas grill on the deck. Just inside, the fully equipped kitchen features new appliances and a beautiful rustic wooden table to enjoy long leisurely meals with family and friends.... but don't forget to go out on the deck to enjoy those sunsets! The top level also includes he master bedroom with a king bed, a full bath, and a half bath.

After dinner, you can go down to the bottom level of the house. There, you'll enjoy the new regulation size pool table. There is also a small wet bar with a microwave for late night popcorn. You'll also discover a large flat screen TV equipped with satellite to watch the big game, as well as 3 video game consoles: Playstation 3, Wii, and XBox 360, along with an assortment of games. This level also great for families with kids. It includes a full bathroom, a bedroom with twin beds, and a large bedroom with a queen bed and a queen sleeper-sofa.

Life at the lodge is relaxing. In the morning, you'll sit on one of the four decks and watch deer in the woods as you sip your coffee. Looking down, you'll watch the sunshine creep into the valleys below. Later, you'll take a hike upward from the lodge on the fire-break trail that starts from the parking area. Then you'll take a picnic lunch down to the picnic tables and watch the kids enjoy the fully equipped playground area...all on the property. There is even a small hibachi grill in case you want to cook hot dogs on the spot.

For the afternoon, you'll have to choose between reading a good book on one of the decks, or learning to play a musical instrument. There is a keyboard and beginner level guitar, mandolin, and banjo hanging on the walls waiting for you to create the Appalachian vibe. You can also hike or drive down the hill to the New river to fish, play, or just enjoy. If you want more excitement, you can drive 15 minutes into Todd and try tubing or kayaking on the river as well. However, you'll want to make it back to the lodge for that sunset!

That evening, you'll want to take the family back down to the playground area and build a fire in the fire pit using the provided firewood. You can sit in the chairs around the pit and roast marshmallows, tell ghost stories, and watch the stars until late at night, before you go back in for your nightly billiards challenge.

Convenience is important. There are two sets of washer/dryers (one on the top level, one on the bottom level). And if you forgot anything, you're only 20 minutes from Boone with stores and restaurants.

Life at "A Moon River View" is relaxing and refreshing. You'll enjoy your stay, and look forward to your next visit!

The Story Behind the Name

We were always a musical family, some with formal training, and others off us with back-porch training. Therefore, we knew our cabin had to have a musical name, and we wanted something that referenced the New river within walking distance of the cabin (and visible from the front deck in winter).

The New River is unique because it's the only major river in North America that flows north. In fact, the New River flows north to the Ohio river, which in turn feeds into the Great Mississippi. Also, the New river is also one of the oldest rivers in the world from a geological standpoint. Therefore, we knew we wanted something timeless, with a connection to the river.

We struggled with the name for a while. However, it was not until a late evening family reunion brainstorming session that we finally voted on the name- "A Moon River View". The song, "Moon River" is from the movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and references expanded horizons. The haunting melody and lyrics of the song celebrate the timelessness of the river, just as we felt time seemed to stop when we were at the cabin.

Consequently, to commemorate the name, there will always be musical instruments in the cabin, some sheet music to "Moon River" and several stopped antique clocks (because we never bother to put batteries in them).

We hope time stops for our guests as well.

Beautiful home with amazing views

  • 4 of 5

We loved the view from the top front porch - just beautiful! The home was furnished in a really lovely way and made our mountain top experience complete. We enjoyed smores two nights and appreciated that a fire was laid ready for us the first night. The hot tub was pleasant as well. Having a grill on the back porch made dinners easier, for sure. We did find that the AC was challenging - the top floor was hot, the middle floor was cool (thermostat located here), and the basement floor was cold, but we put our MI family down there. We had both carpenter ants and regular ants but I had read previous reviews and brought ant bait along. My disappointment is in the four dogs that were constantly roaming at the house directly under this one. I did not appreciate arriving and having to pick up five piles of dog ____from the driveway. They also barked and scared our little ones who tried to use the play equipment. Since the dogs were unleashed, we did not feel confident letting them go unaccompanied to the play equipment.

The kitchen is stocked and ready for 12 guests, plenty of dishes and glassware as well as many pans and casserole dishes. The only thing we wish we had were some additional chairs to set at the table. All in all we enoyed the week very much.

Not again

  • 3 of 5

Views were outstanding. Family time fabulous. Cabin’s cleanliness was definitely not up to my level or expectation. Cabin had not had a good cleaning in quite sometime. Bugs and cobwebs everywhere and little ants on kitchen counter every time we entered kitchen. Will not stay here again.
