Historic oasis in the heart of a charming town

Bedrooms 5
Separate WCs1
Space 4,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Beautiful, centrally located home, sleeps 12 plus 2 in camp beds

The house is a charming, historic building set in the centre of town. It is less than 200m from the main square so perfect for being close to everything you need but once you enter into the walled courtyard garden with your own private pool, you are in your own peaceful oasis.

The house sleeps 12 in beds with an extra 2 on camp beds plus a cot for a baby, ideal for a large family, families sharing or a group of friends. There is a cot and high chair available as well as a Maclaren style pushchair. There are lots of communal spaces to spend time together and enough secluded spots to find a quiet moment away from it all. Wifi is available throughout the property.

The garden is beautifully maintained and is a real sun trap. The olive and birch trees have been planted to give shade over the seating areas throughout the day. The pool is a perfect place for a cooling dip and is a great size for a game of pool volleyball.

On the ground floor of the house is an opulent games room complete with pool table, board games and chess set for those occasional rainy days. Next door is the library and formal dining room which, due to the thick original old city walls, stay cool in summer, perfect for escaping the heat in the midday sun.

On the first floor is the large homely kitchen with extendable table to seat 14. It is well equipped with every type of gadget, utensil and kitchen aide that you may ever possibly need. There is a large fireplace in the centre of the room, a cosy place for drawing in on a winters night. The relaxing living room with TV and UK free view is also on the first floor with the first master suite off this room. This bedroom has a large comfortable bed and a beautiful view over the garden. The en suite has a separate bath and shower.

The second floor is home to three characterful bedrooms, including the large dormitory which has enough space to play in too. The family bathroom is on this floor.

The second master suite takes up the whole of the third floor with shower room. This room boasts a four poster bed and fantastic views over the Dordogne to the opposite bank.

There is central heating throughout, necessary on a cold winter day and air conditioning in the bedrooms.

At the back of the garden, next to the pool, is a large conservatory with barbecue area. A fantastic entertaining space where those long lunches turn into dinners. There is an outside shower by the pool and separate loo next to the conservatory.

Behind the conservatory is the utility room, gym and sauna with a ping pong table in the room above.

Gorgeous house in a lovely town on the Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous house in a lovely old bastide town on the Dordogne. Plenty for all ages, the kids loved the pool, table tennis and snooker and the grown ups loved all the vineyards (St Emilion is only 20 minutes away but there are so many more). Everyone enjoyed the canoeing! Plenty of bars and restaurants (we particularly liked the Fil De L'eau overlooking the river) in walking distance and one of the best Saturday markets in France. We will be back.

Great house in a great spot!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for a week with my young family and was very impressed. The house itself is large with very spacious rooms. The kitchen is very well equipped with a large family table although the garden also has a good eating area next to a pool (the garden is ‘walled’ so very kid friendly - as is the pool). We loved some of the unique features - such as a medieval turret and secret passage! The house is walking distance to the river and also many shops and great restaurants - with a very nice Saturday morning market thats not to be missed. We hired a car and the house has off road parking but we never used it as the street is so quiet. Its about a 20 min drive to some amazing chateaus which I very much recommend.

A wonderful place to relax and drink wine

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Ste Foy la Grande earlier this year. The house offers wonderful French charm and is very convenient for those early morning croissant runs. There was plenty of room for the whole family and we loved our stay. We'd definitely revisit next year!

Beautiful holiday house for sharing with friends

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week here with friends and 6 children. House is beautiful, well equipped and spacious. Garden, BBQ area and pool are nice and secluded behind a high wall so you get privacy in the middle of town. The pool, table tennis and billiard tables kept the kids happy, and there is good canoeing near by and horse riding. The Saturday market is great, and there are lots of bars, restaurants and vineyards to explore in the area. Great place for a chilled summer holiday.

Comme des coqs en pâte

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Sainte Foy la Grande is a bastide town built in the 13th century, to provide protection against the marauding armies of English in the Anglo-French wars. The corner tower of the house is part of the original old city walls, so you really are immersed in the history of the town just by staying here.

Ste Foy town is a grid design of streets centring in on a main arcaded central square with a fortified church. The square is the centre of town life and is perfect for grabbing a cool beer in the summer or a warming grande creme on a winters morning. We head to Bar Des Arcades on the corner of the square most mornings for a caffeine hit. The square has several bars and restaurants within it and an excellent bakery (Mazzocco Sylvain), perfect for those essential breakfast croissants, all less than 2 minutes walk from the house (190 metres).

Sainte Foy la Grande has one of France's best markets. Every Saturday locals travel from far and wide to purchase their weekly groceries from this extensive and fresh market. There are also gifts, locally produced crafts and foods on offer.

The town of Ste Foy la Grande is not only known for its lovely old buildings and wonderful market, but also for its deep river port, which has been of such importance to the wine trade over many years. There are many vineyards to visit in the local area for tasting and tours. A firm family favourite is Chateau Des Eyssards.

Port Sainte Foy just across the bridge is largely a fishing village, but has also been very significant for the wine trade. There are several restaurants to visit in this neighbouring town (15 minutes walk from the house). A great option that does really good food for large groups and is our first choice for a special occasion local dinner is fil de l'eau just over the bridge.

Ste Foy la Grande has plenty of opportunities to get active and outdoorsy. In the surrounding area you can play golf, ride horses, hire bicycles, go fishing, swimming, play tennis and canoe on the Dordogne river.

Ste Foy is a great base for exploring the region, there are lots of fascinating places within easy reach; Bergerac, Bordeaux, Eymet, St Emilion and Duras to name a few.
