Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Grand and Spacious for those that want to have fun spending time together.

Chateau Bourrel is just on the outskirts of the small French town of Quillan two minutes walk into town.

It was built in 1923 by a renowned and very prestigious hat maker Jean Bourrel, he designed and fashioned hats for and Kings, Queens and celebrities all across Europe. Later he became the major industrialist of the area and many Avenue’s and buildings in Quillan have his name ascribed to them.

This house faces due south and so gets the sun all day and is positioned to take in one of the most breathtaking views of the hills and mountains of Quillan. The river Aude runs along side the large and beautiful gardens and in the quiet of the night the gentle soothing sound of the river can be heard.

The house has been restored and improved with wooden floors and beautiful décor, keeping some of the most poignant features of the original build.

Please see below for further details of this grand, beautiful house, just right for large parties who want to spend some time together.

The house has been restored and improved with wooden floors and beautiful decor, keeping some of the most poignant features of the original build. A large modern kitchen has been installed to cater for large parties, and en-suite bathrooms have been instated with marble tiles and contemporarily designed bathroom fittings.

The bedrooms are light, airy and warm, some having verandas that look out over the gardens. There are five bedrooms, (three en-suite) ranged over two floors, all with large double beds.

The central main 'Salon' (living room) is large enough for dancing, and hosting large parties. With a wood fire in the Salon and central heating this house never gets cold.

There is a large roof terrace on the 2nd floor with , pagoda, tables and chairs, and a hot tube, barbecue cooker for those Al fresco moments.

The garden has places to explore and beautiful trees and for those keen on fishing just bring a rod and line because all you have to do is step out your front door.

This place is ideal for groups, doing Meditation, Yoga, Qi-gong, Ramblers, Walkers, Canoeists, Dancers and we feel a great place to get married, and have a reception or even for a film set.

Although we prefer you not to smoke in the house, there are so many lovely places to sit or stand on the decking or garden I' m sure no one will mind enjoying tobacco under the sky.

Spacious and central, great for large group

  • 4 of 5

We had 9 people (8 adults and 1 child) and the house was plenty big enough for everyone. All bedrooms bar one had an ensuite, so only 2 rooms had to share a bathroom (a very large one which was great.) Plus there's an extra toilet off the kitchen. The kitchen is well appointed and lovely to cook in. It's open plan with a large dining table so very conducive to cooking and socialising. Just a few minutes walk to the village which has great restaurants, bars and the market every Wednesday and Saturday. A lovely village to stay in and a great base to explore the region from. Kay who met us was very friendly and welcoming and helpful with everything to do with the house. She recommended where to eat, where the supermarket was (small one within walking distance, plus a large Carrefour about 5-8mins drive away.) it's a lovely spacious house with a large terrace space on the roof.

Great place for a holiday

  • 5 of 5

We came to Chatueu Burrell with 10 adults and three kids. The property is really fantastic, in my view. It is spacious with a large kitchen and loung room area, as well as an amazing deck with views of mountains and country side. It is located within minutes of the town centre, where there are supermarkets, restaurants and a seemingly unending set of concerts in the town square. The property manager, Jacqui, was incredibly helpful - organising cot beds for me and generally very pro-active with advice and responses to my questions. There is plenty of car parking space, and Quillan is an easy 40-50 minute drive from Carcasonne airport, where you can rent vehicles at very reasonable rates. The nearby region has a ton of activities - in Quillan itself there is white water rafting, further afield there are museums, wine caves, mountains for walking, horseback riding, a dinosaur museum (for kids), a train for kids, historic towns like Lagrasse (a must visit) and of course Carcasonne itself. I think this is a very good place to stay and visit the region, which is a wonderful corner of the world.

THE most relaxing place to stay... EVER!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Chateau Jean Bourrel over new year with a group of friends and I have to say it was the most relaxing break I've had in years! The scenery was breath taking and opening the shutters in the morning to the view of the mountains was a perfect start to the day. We spent our time reading by the fire, wandering around the very cute village and taking part in some quite challenging walking trips up the mountains which i loved.

The amenities are fantastic - the kitchen is amazing and is so big it didn't feel cramped when 12 of us were taking turns to cook and eat around the huge table. We also kept ourselves amused playing table tennis and silly board games.

Quillan is a lovely place to visit and it's definitely worth hiring a car and taking a drive around the stunning countryside.

If you're looking for a break with a group of friends i couldn't recommend this place highly enough.

Tranquil surroundings and easily accessible

  • 5 of 5

Whether you are a large family or a group of friends, this wonderful house has it all for the perfect holiday to get away from it all. With large bedrooms and modern bathrooms there is nothing you will miss. The hardest decision I had to make during my stay was whether to sit on the sun-soaked terrace next to the hot tub or lounge about in front of a roaring fire.

If you do want to be a little more active then the town is surrounded by great hiking trails and in about an hour you could be hitting the slopes at Ax-les-Thermes.

A truly wonderful place for a holiday and I hope to return very soon.

Oh and if you need to stay connected there is good wifi through most of the house!

Beautiful House in a Picturesque location

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our large group over the new year. The rooms were spacious, the hot tub was accommodating, the grounds were vast and the living and dining areas were generous. The location was easily accessible to some great hikes and it was only a 60 minute drive from good skiing. Perks include: ping pong table, hot tub working fireplace, great wifi, large sun deck, massive garden, and a great sound system.

Lovely way to see in the new year

  • 5 of 5

Spent new years here with a 10 other friends. Despite our group size, the house never felt crowded. The house was comfortable, incredibly spacious, modern and set in beautiful surrounds. Our room (with sizeable ensuite) was south facing and looked out to the surrounding hills, making it very hard to get out of bed. Location is idyllic with plenty of charming towns and villages as well as good walking tracks. Really lovely way to spend new years.

The small town of Quillan is protected by a circle of 'hills', The town sits in a bowl and you only have to walk a short distance in any direction to get lovely views of the town.

Although the inhabitants only number maybe four to five thousand they are served by four banks, two or three bakers (Boulanger), a fishmonger (poissonnier) butcher and tobacconist, classy bars and restaurants.

There are regular markets, as is the French way, as well as many music and sporting events including, on certain years the Tour de France cycle race which passes through the town.

The town is also home to many artists and artisans.

This is a very special area in many ways, home to the Cathars in the 1100’s, nearby is the famous Rennes Les Chateau.

There is a dinosaur museum, with a dig you can join in! Also a hat museum nearby, you can get to them all by train if you don't drive or by taxi.

Wine routes: The Languedoc Roussillon area is well known for the vast vineyards, Quillan is in the middle of the Corbiere Fitou and the Blanquette de Limoux with many small vineyards in between. Plenty of opportunity for tasting.

Sporting activities included white-water rafting, horse riding, cycling, walking, mountaineering, fishing, motor biking.

If you fancy gliding it's 15min away!

Also in the area are luscious Thermal spas all three within 20 min driving distance where you can sit in a pool or the river in water that is 25 to 30 degrees.

The Mediterranean sea is 45 minutes drive through some of the most glorious mountainous scenery.

Ski: Nearest ski is 25 min away at Camurac, les angles 45 min away, Andorra 1 hour 15 min away there are buses from Quillan.
