Chateau Bourrel is just on the outskirts of the small French town of Quillan two minutes walk into town.
It was built in 1923 by a renowned and very prestigious hat maker Jean Bourrel, he designed and fashioned hats for and Kings, Queens and celebrities all across Europe. Later he became the major industrialist of the area and many Avenue’s and buildings in Quillan have his name ascribed to them.
This house faces due south and so gets the sun all day and is positioned to take in one of the most breathtaking views of the hills and mountains of Quillan. The river Aude runs along side the large and beautiful gardens and in the quiet of the night the gentle soothing sound of the river can be heard.
The house has been restored and improved with wooden floors and beautiful décor, keeping some of the most poignant features of the original build.
Please see below for further details of this grand, beautiful house, just right for large parties who want to spend some time together.
The house has been restored and improved with wooden floors and beautiful decor, keeping some of the most poignant features of the original build. A large modern kitchen has been installed to cater for large parties, and en-suite bathrooms have been instated with marble tiles and contemporarily designed bathroom fittings.
The bedrooms are light, airy and warm, some having verandas that look out over the gardens. There are five bedrooms, (three en-suite) ranged over two floors, all with large double beds.
The central main 'Salon' (living room) is large enough for dancing, and hosting large parties. With a wood fire in the Salon and central heating this house never gets cold.
There is a large roof terrace on the 2nd floor with , pagoda, tables and chairs, and a barbecue cooker for those Al fresco moments.
The garden has places to explore and beautiful trees and for those keen on fishing just bring a rod and line because all you have to do is step out your front door.
This place is ideal for groups, doing Meditation, Yoga, Qi-gong, Ramblers, Walkers, Canoeists, Dancers and we feel a great place to get married, and have a reception or even for a film set.
We stayed at Chateau Jean Bourrel over new year with a group of friends and I have to say it was the most relaxing break I've had in years! The scenery was breath taking and opening the shutters in the morning to the view of the mountains was a perfect start to the day. We spent our time reading by the fire, wandering around the very cute village and taking part in some quite challenging walking trips up the mountains which i loved.
The amenities are fantastic - the kitchen is amazing and is so big it didn't feel cramped when 12 of us were taking turns to cook and eat around the huge table. We also kept ourselves amused playing table tennis and silly board games.
Quillan is a lovely place to visit and it's definitely worth hiring a car and taking a drive around the stunning countryside.
If you're looking for a break with a group of friends i couldn't recommend this place highly enough.
Whether you are a large family or a group of friends, this wonderful house has it all for the perfect holiday to get away from it all. With large bedrooms and modern bathrooms there is nothing you will miss. The hardest decision I had to make during my stay was whether to sit on the sun-soaked terrace next to the hot tub or lounge about in front of a roaring fire.
If you do want to be a little more active then the town is surrounded by great hiking trails and in about an hour you could be hitting the slopes at Ax-les-Thermes.
A truly wonderful place for a holiday and I hope to return very soon.
Oh and if you need to stay connected there is good wifi through most of the house!
This house was perfect for our large group over the new year. The rooms were spacious, the hot tub was accommodating, the grounds were vast and the living and dining areas were generous. The location was easily accessible to some great hikes and it was only a 60 minute drive from good skiing. Perks include: ping pong table, hot tub working fireplace, great wifi, large sun deck, massive garden, and a great sound system.
Spent new years here with a 10 other friends. Despite our group size, the house never felt crowded. The house was comfortable, incredibly spacious, modern and set in beautiful surrounds. Our room (with sizeable ensuite) was south facing and looked out to the surrounding hills, making it very hard to get out of bed. Location is idyllic with plenty of charming towns and villages as well as good walking tracks. Really lovely way to spend new years.
House is beautiful and has everything you need-fast wifi(not always easy to find in some holiday homes), rain-fall showers, good beds/bedding, ping-pong table, hot-tub. There was nothing I missed from home and all of us were able to do any work we needed to do out there. Huge kitchen with two ovens and very well equipped. Bathrooms are first-class and the fire-place is a perfect place to play games in front of in the evening after a hot-tub under the stars. View of the mountains from the bedrooms are gorgeous and you can hear the river that runs along the property from most the rooms which is very relaxing. We went ski-ing, hiking, visited local markets, went on bike rides, cooked huge dinners every night and used the main room as a dance floor for new year's eve. We also spent days reading in the sunshine on the roof terrace-the house is so big you can have 12 people in it and have plenty of your own space/peace.We drove to the coast for the day-(Collioure) and had oysters by the sea which was lovely. Perfect place for a romantic break away or a big trip with friends or family.
Incredible location set in beautiful gardens with river running through the side of the property and surrounded by beautiful view of the pyrenees, kids loved having so much space to play in and enjoyed a long walk up the mountain. Hot tub was perfect for my wife and I to sip a glass of wine in the evening and stare out at the clear night sky. Loved the quaint French town of Quillan, a couple of minutes walk to the nearby bakery where we had french patisseries for breakfast and ate at nearby restaurants all well priced and good food. We also cooked in and the kitchen was a pleasure to cook in, the view from the dining room, just incredible! Was a pleasure dealing with the owners who made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, I can not recommend this Villa more highly, best vacation we have had yet.
The small town of Quillan is protected by a circle of 'hills', The town sits in a bowl and you only have to walk a short distance in any direction to get lovely views of the town.
