About the property

Spacious 4 bed cottage, spectacular waterside views, pet friendly

Lochside Cottage

Lochside Cottage is a charming and spacious 4 bedroom self-catering holiday cottage situated in a stunning location with panoramic views across Loch Katrine. You can see right down the loch from inside the house and can watch the sun rise over the loch in the morning. It is a beautiful rural location, surrounded by forests and mountains, but also has a wide range of shops, services, and visitor attractions available within a short drive. Lochside Cottage is situated right in the heart of the outstanding natural beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, near to many different lochs, and woodland walks, which all have their own character. It is very quiet and peaceful, and is an ideal waterside retreat.

We have new mattresses in all rooms from April 2018, either "Which?" best rated, or better, with lovely natural filings. These are 1 double, 4 singles and in one room, the bed can be arranged as a double or 2 singles, please let us know what you need.

Lochside Cottage is a solid, stone-built, 4 bedroom self-catering holiday cottage, attached to Stronachlachar Lodge. It is situated within a 13 mile long private road (gated), winding round the loch, which is a lovely route to cycle or hike. In addition to being quiet and secluded, the cottage is also within a short walking distance of a lovely waterfront café, the Pier Café (licenced), open for breakfast onwards, and which also serves lunch, afternoon tea and, in peak season, serves evening meals and becomes the small local pub 4 nights a week. A range of supermarkets deliver directly to the cottage, including Waitrose and Asda, and some guests find it useful to pre-arrange a delivery for the first day you arrive.

Lochside Cottage is available Friday to Friday in peak season May-September), and we may be able to offer different arrival and departure dates out of peak season. Please enquire.

There is a reasonable Wi-Fi signal at the Cottage, which is normally suitable for using the internet, and reading/sending emails etc. There is a payphone inside the house, as the mobile phone signal can be unreliable/absent. You will need change (coins) to use this phone, but it does accept external calls so other people can also call you. It is generally not possible to send texts, due to the lack of mobile phone reception. We welcome up to 3 well behaved dogs, and offer free off road parkings for two cars.

In the local area

Lochside Cottage is less than 500 metres from the pier where you can take the steam ship, SS Sir Walter Scott steamer daily down to the other end of the loch and back. This steamer runs throughout the year, though there is a reduced service in the winter. Cycles can be hired at that end of the loch, and many people like to take the steamship one way, and cycle back the other way. The adventurous may like to cycle the whole 13 mile route around the loch.

The cottage is within a short drive of wonderful waterfalls and 3 course meals at the hotel at Inversnaid, (4 miles away) where you can park for free, and can pick up the start of some major hiking trails such as the RSPB nature trail which follows the West Highland Way. Inversnaid is great place for a long or short walks, with a lovely meal afterwards in the hotel with wonderful views. You can also take a different boat here, on a different loch for more sightseeing.

Nearby to Aberfoyle, (13 miles away) there is a large visitor centre in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park with a café with far-reaching views. This is a great place to start a wide range of walks, from very short accessible trails, to long, challenging walks. There is also a very pleasant scenic drive off the Dukes Pass just outside of Aberfoyle. There is a Co-op food shop in Aberfoyle which is open to 10 pm, with a cashpoint. There is also a lovely delicatessen in Aberfoyle, with some unusual and interesting foods.

Within 15 miles, the Kinlochard and Aberfoyle area offer excellent leisure facilities, including a sailing club and nearby MacDonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa. There are opportunities to visit golf courses, enjoy watersports, hire kayaks and canoes, go pony trecking and enjoy a wide range of walks, hikes and cycle routes. There are many mountains and large hills nearby. Lochside Cottage is within easy driving distance of Loch Lomond, which offers further lochside cruises, an extensive tourist shopping park, a spa hotel, an aquarium, championship golf courses, and further sightseeing opportunities.

We recommend the bakers called "Mhor Bread" in Callander, (22 miles away, route passing 5 different lochs) who offer an outstanding range of pastries and pies. A riverside walk is available at Callander, which also has a wide range of interesting little shops and an art gallery.

Slightly further away, the main city of Stirling offers a wide range of city shops and eateries. The famous cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are also accessible by car and offer a very wide range of shops and city experiences.

Children and Parents

We welcome children. Please be aware that whilst there is a low wall separating the loch from the land, this is not continuous, and children could access the water. The water is deep in places. Children will need to be supervised at all times whilst outside. We supply a small range of children's toys and books. There is a high chair, and a travel cot at the property. It is your choice whether you choose to light the woodburner if you have small children. There is a fireguard at the property, but please be aware, the stove will get very hot on the outside when it is lit. Children must not touch the woodburning stove.

Pet friendly

We are pet friendly and allow 3 dogs - with responsible owners!

Please be aware that all owners are expected to clean up after their dogs, and must not allow them to run into neighbour's gardens. Please dry very wet or muddy dogs before bringing them in, as the house is very large and spacious downstairs and it will take the cleaning team a long time to clean if a wet dog shakes mud everywhere. Please take care to keep dogs away from the woodburning stove if you choose to light it. There is a fireguard to keep animals away from the hot stove, but please be aware that the outside of the stove will get very hot. Dogs are not allowed upstairs, or on the furniture.

Accessibility

There are 3 steps into the property, but once inside the ground floor rooms are all on one level. There is a handrail up the stairs. There are 2 downstairs bedrooms and a bathroom, and 2 upstairs bedrooms and a bathroom. It is necessary to step into the bath to have a shower.

Travel Directions

Post code for SAT NAV is FK8 3TY. Directions: From the south, take either the M80 or M9 for Stirling and, whilst on the M9, exit at junction 10 at Stirling onto the A84. After some eight miles, fork left onto the A873 Thornhill, Port of Menteith and Aberfoyle Road. Four miles after Thornhill merge left onto the A81 to Aberfoyle. Proceed through the village of Aberfoyle and continue straight ahead as signposted for the B829 for Kinlochard and Inversnaid. Just over four miles thereafter, with Loch Ard on your left, you will come into Kinlochard. Continue straight ahead from the Wee Blether Tearoom, driving to the end of the road with the T junction, with signpost left to Inversnaid and right to Stronachlachar. Take the right and follow the road down to Loch Katrine and, on your approach to The Pier Café car park, look left to the electronic barrier, indicating the private road. On passing through this barrier, (code supplied after booking) follow the road round to the right and up towards Lochside House. Park on the gravel area directly next to Lochside Cottage. The road from Aberfoyle is at times a single track tarmac road, which requires care and attention in places, and it is recommended that guests who have had a long drive take a short rest break before continuing the last part of the journey from Aberfoyle.

Inside the cottage

On the ground floor, the cottage is beautifully decked in white oak hardwood flooring with a log burning fire and an additional sun-lounge that has open views of the loch. There is a kitchen/dining room with wall and floor mounted units as well as stainless steel integrated appliances, including a dishwasher and washing machine. The kitchen door opens on to the outside garden area (currently unfenced, open to the lochside). The dining area has an ornamental fireplace with a window looking cross the loch to the hills. From the kitchen/dining room, glass panel doors open up onto a sitting room with a wood-burning stove which is semi open-plan to a further sun room taking in the panoramic loch views. The sun room has a door that opens onto a small decked balcony, leading to the drive and from there to the lochside. There are two twin-bedded rooms downstairs, and a downstairs bathroom/W.C. with over-bath shower. There is full central heating throughout the house.

On the first floor, there is a double bedroom with double bed, and a further large twin-bedded room. There is also an upstairs bathroom/W.C. with over-bath shower.

About Gail and Tom Holliman

We have spent many happy holidays in lots of different locations all over Scotland, and prefer Scotland to anywhere else we have been. Even when we feel we know an area really well, there is always more to discover. Our dogs, Lucy and Pickle, also love Scotland, though they are not so keen on the rainy days!

Gail and Tom Holliman purchased this house in 2018

Why Gail and Tom Holliman chose Stronachlachar

We fell in love with this beautiful house after looking for just the right house for over two and a half years. We were looking for a waterside house, which had access to the water, which was beautiful and remote, but not isolated, but also modern and fully renovated inside with gas central heating and double glazing, which can be quite difficult to find! When we saw this one, and viewed inside it was just perfect. The downstairs area is huge, with plenty of room for 8 people and dogs if they have them. We are looking forward to adding a few more finishing touches over the coming months, and have enjoyed welcoming guests since we purchased the house in April 2018.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with the feel of the house, it feels so special and different. It is such a beautiful peaceful location, and to be able to see across the water on a cold day from inside the house, being nice and warm with a cup of tea or a hot chocolate, is a real treat. On a sunny day it is just beautiful, and even when it is raining, the rainbows are amazing. As there is no light pollution at night, I remember seeing all the stars on our first visit there, I had never seen so many! We love staying, which is always a good sign when hosts actually enjoy staying in their guest houses!

A lot of walks start there, including the "waterfalls walk" for children, which is lovely as there are a lot of interesing things in a short walk. The walk around Loch Ard is also lovely. Aberfoyle is the nearest shopping area. Several supermarkets can deliver food to the house. There are lovely shops at Callander, with a great bakery. We accept well behaved dogs, but do not allow dogs on the furniture or on the beds.

Lovely house and location

  • 5 of 5

We recently had a brilliant stay in Lochside Cottage. The house is well equipped, cosy and warm, and has spacious living space for 8 people. The loch views are stunning and we had some wonderful walks from the door of the house. Excellent value too - would recommend and would love to return.

Wish I could give it more than five stars!

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing! It is as pictured in the photos but even better! The scenery was spectacular and peaceful. The house was large, roomy, clean and very well equipped. The beds were wonderful, everyone in our group slept well. We enjoyed the Pier Cafe for snacks and a lovely evening meal at the weekend. Very handy to have that so close if you don’t want to cook. The experience far exceeded our expectations. Two points to consider. WiFi is adequate for checking emails and slow internet browsing but not great for steaming. It is fairly remote, so be sure to pick up your supplies in Aberfoyle on the way. Gail was wonderful to work with. Thank you for letting us stay in your home!

Owner's Response: So glad you had a lovely holiday! Thank you so much for letting the caretaker in to fix the window that wouldn't open, we really appreciated being able to sort that out, when the previous owner thought he might have found the window keys. I'm glad you liked the new mattresses, it's good to know they are comfy! We agree that the wifi is still a bit slow, even after we have tried fitting a new router, so we will try to point that out a bit more clearly to people. It is definitely a bit remote, and we would suggest everyone pick up supplies in Aberfoyle, or get groceries delivered. So glad you had a good time on holiday, and enjoyed exploring the area. Best wishes, Gail and Tom

Great!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a wonderful time at Lochside Cottage! The house is in a truly beautiful location, perfect for relaxing in. Gail and Tom were very helpful in providing information for us before we arrived and seemed genuinely keen for us to enjoy our holiday. We also saw some amazing wildlife - including a badger! Would definitely recommend.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you had a great time! Glad you saw the badger, they can be a bit elusive sometimes. Its always lovely to hear people are as excited about the wildlife as we are, sounds like you had fun spotting the natural inhabitants! Really happy to hear you enjoyed your holiday. Best wishes, Gail and Tom

Lochside Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Welcomed on our first day by a rainbow across the Loch and that image is the definition of our holiday.

Great communication before the trip. Lovely welcoming touches like the family pack of tasty crisps and the doggy treats. The house itself was amazing but homely. Able to relax and not be following the kids around telling them not to touch. It was clean, comfortable and a home from home. The view was to die for, the beds were super comfy. The log burner was the icing on the cake. The decor was tasteful and we loved the tartan throws and cow cushions.

Facilities were ideal and cannot think of anything that you forgot. Were a family with 5 kids and were well supplied for crockery wise. The toys were a great touch and the story books. The bird book was great to use whilst watching the birds at the feeder. The condiments, starter essentials and cleaning products were ideal. Cooker is basic but more than servuceable. The wifi wasnt great but we were not too fussed about that as im sure most people wanting the tranquility of this house wont be.

Aberfoyle had 2 lovely pub/restaurants who both welcomed the kids and provided great food.

The scenery and walks are right on the doorstep and we never got tired of the view.

It was perfect and we didnt want to come home.

Thank you for making our 1st trip to Scotland truly magical.

Idyllisch!

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Danke! I have used a Google translate, and I think the review says this ... "Idyllic! A well-equipped, clean, neat house. If you're looking for peace, here's the place. But you have to remember that you have to go to the nearest village for about 25 minutes. In the Pier café around the corner, a cider or beer can be enjoyed in the evening." We are really glad you had a peaceful time, and enjoyed the Pier Café, its lovely, isn't it. :0) Best wishes, Gail and Tom

Lochside Cottage is on the waterfront, and has spectacular views of the waterside. You can even see right down the loch from inside the house and can watch the sun rise over it in the morning. It is a beautiful rural location, surrounded by forests and mountains, but also well serviced with local amenities. Lochside Cottage is situated within a 26 mile long private road winding round the loch, which is a lovely route to cycle or hike. Cars can access this single track road, but is very quiet. Lochside Cottage is situated right in the heart of the outstanding natural beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, near to many different lochs, which all have their own character. It is very quiet and peaceful, and an ideal rural retreat, though still with a wide range of shops and services available within a short drive. We also will also have gorgeous new mattresses from February 2018, either "Which?" magazine winners, or even better, with lovely natural fillings.

You can catch a special steam ferry, the Sir Walter Scott, for a tour around the loch less than 200 metres away from Lochside Cottage. Asda and Waitrose deliver food and shopping to the house, which may guests choose to arrange for convenience. There is a café, the Pier Café, (licenced) also 200 metres away, which serves breakfast, lunch, and in the peak season also serves evening meals and becomes the local pub 4 nights a week. They open at different times during the year, but are open all year round.

There are wonderful waterfalls and 3 course meals at the hotel at Inversnaid, (4 miles away) where you can park for free, and can pick up the start of some major hiking trails such as the RSPB nature trail which follows the West Highland Way. Inversnaid is great place for a long or short walks, with a lovely meal afterwards, in the restaurant with wonderful views. You can also take a different boat here, on a different loch for more sightseeing.

Nearby to Aberfoyle, (12 miles away) there is a large visitor centre in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park with a café, which is a lovely place to start a wide range of walks, from very short accessible trails, to very long, challenging walks. There is also a very pleasant scenic drive off the Dukes Pass just outside of Aberfoyle, but the gates to this scenic drive can close at 4pm, please read the signs for when it will be closing.

Within 15 miles, there are opportunities to visit golf courses, enjoy watersports, pony tracking and a wide range of walks, hikes and cycle routes. There are many mountains and large hills nearby. It is reasonably near to Loch Lomond, which offers further lochside cruises, an extensive tourist shopping park, a spa hotel, an aquarium, championship golf courses, and further sightseeing opportunities. There is a co-op food shop in Aberfoyle which is open to 10 pm, with a cashpoint. There is also a lovely delicatessen in Aberfoyle, with some unusual and interesting foods. Aberfoyle also has a petrol station.

May we recommend the bakers called "Mhor Bread" in Callander, (22 miles away, passing 5 different lochs) who offer an outstanding range of pastries and pies. A riverside walk is available from Callander, with a wide range of interesting little shops and an art gallery.

Slightly further away, the main city of Stirling offers a wide range of city shops and eateries. The famous cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are also accessible by car and offer a very wide range of shops and city experiences.

The Crannog Centre is also a unique place to visit, it is a reconstruction of the ancient dwellings that early people used to build to live in, out on the lochs. They are like very sturdy little wooden house/islands. This is a place which is unique to Scotland. You can have a tour of the Crannog, and can try your hand at some ancient crafts. An excellent day out for those who enjoy Living History. It is not close, but it is a beautiful 2 hr drive (60 miles) to the Crannog Centre from Lochside Cottage. There is also a marina with an excellent café near to the Crannog centre.

We welcome dogs, and offer free parking for 2 cars.
