Your home from home in the heart of the beautiful Salzkammergut!

Our apartment Bad Ischl Bergblick is a comfortable, fully-equipped apartment, with tastefully decorated light and airy rooms, and holds the highest quality classification of 4 Edelweiss awarded by the Upper Austria Private Landlords Association We are an English couple living locally, who personally prepare it with care for our guests. It is in a traditionally styled building, in a quiet no-through road, yet within easy walking distance of the town centre, station, and thermal baths. The apartment has a double bedroom with a large double bed and wardrobe. the lounge has two comfortable armchairs, a sofa (which can be turned into a double bed), and dining area. There is a log-burning stove in the lounge. It has a separate fully-equipped kitchen, with an oven, ceramic hob, microwave, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, refrigerator and dishwasher. There is a small freezer in the store room. The large, fully-tiled bathroom has a large washbasin, full-size bath, a separate modern shower enclosure, and has underfloor heating. There is a separate WC. There is also a washing machine, and a drying rack is provided. Cycle and ski storage is available on-site.

The balcony, which is accessible from the bedroom and lounge, has wonderful views of the Zimnitz mountain and the fantastic sunsets. A table and chairs are provided in the summer for you to relax. Please note that there is no garden.


This property is ideally situated for taking advantage of the natural beauty of the area. Cyclists of all ages are catered for, from flat cycle paths alongside picturesque rivers, to mountain biking among the magnificent scenery (cycle hire is available locally). For those interested in walking, there are many possibilities in the area, from light evening strolls from the apartment, to more taxing walks in the mountains. We provide walking maps, and if you wish we can provide more information and further ideas, as we are keen walkers ourselves!

At Lake Wolfgang, there is a whole range of water sports available, including sailing, pedalo hire, wind surfing, or simply swimming. All the lakes in the area are drinking-water quality, and are crystal clear. Lake Wolfgang is just a short car or bus ride away from Bad Ischl. In the summer, spend a day relaxing on a boat visiting the quaint towns of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl, all with their own characters.

Golfing is available at the Salzkammergut golf course, less than 15 minutes drive from the apartment.


In winter, there is superb skiing at Dachstein West (Upper Austria’s largest ski area), or at Postalm (Europe’s second largest high mountain plateau). Both resorts are suitable for all ages and abilities. Cross-country skiing is also very popular in the area, particularly at Rettenbachalm, on the outskirts of Bad Ischl, and at Gosau, where there are approximately 45km of prepared tracks in a beautiful valley setting particularly suitable for beginners. Ski buses to all of these areas can be found within 5 minutes walk of the apartment, and is free for guests staying 3 nights or more. We can provide more information on request.

In Bad Ischl itself, the thermal spa is open all year, and it is possible to enjoy the amazing experience of swimming outside amid the snow!

And of course there are the advent markets, particularly round Lake Wolfgang where can enjoy a day travelling between them by boat.


For those who are less active, or if you just want to relax a little more, there are plenty of things to do both in the immediate area and further afield. Take a trip up the Schafberg mountain by rack railway, or the Zwölferhorn by cable car and enjoy magnificent views. The latter is particularly beautiful in the winter, with cleared paths and cosy mountain huts to warm up in with a glass of hot mulled wine!

A visit to Hallstatt is a must. From its old buildings dating back hundreds of years, perched on precipitous slopes in seemingly impossible locations, to the Bronze Age burial site and salt mine, it cannot fail to impress and delight the visitor. Take a boat trip round the Hallstättersee (Lake Hallstatt), among the mountains that surround it. Other attractions in the same area include the Ice Caves, Krippenstein (with its almost lunar landscape), and the Five Fingers, a viewing platform with stunning views over Lake Hallstatt and far beyond.

Or go to Salzburg, with it's wonderful old buildings and modern shops, easily reachable by public transport. Further afield, the Austrian cities of Graz and Linz are ideal for day trips, as are Berchtesgaden, the Eagle's Nest, and Königsee in Germany.

Why Mike and Jenny Herridge chose Bad Ischl

We have been visiting Austria for many years, both summer and winter, and decided to buy ourselves a holiday home here. We fell in love with Bad Ischl in general, and this apartment in particular, at first sight. Being in such a quiet area, yet near the river and within easy walking distance of the town, meant that it was ideal for us. Having spent two years visiting it, we moved to Austria permanently in 2009.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment was built as an everyday apartment, and as a result it is roomy and comfortable. The separate bedroom and kitchen, with a good-sized light and airy living/dining room means that you can really feel it is a home from home! The location, just 5 minutes walk from the train and bus stations, 7 minutes from the thermal baths, and less than 10 minutes from the centre, means that a car is not necessary to enjoy the area.

Lastly, being able to wake up in the morning to views of the mountains, and to sit on the balcony in the evening to enjoy the sunsets over Zimnitz, makes it a perfect spot!

  • The fully-tiled bathroom is extremely roomy, and benefits from a separate modern shower enclosure in addition to a bath. The washbasin is larger than may be considered usual. There is a cosmetics mirror, shelf, and storage for toiletries. The room also contains a washing machine, and washing liquid is included at no charge. There is underfloor heating in the room.

In Salzkammergut da kann man gut lustig sein! [White Horse Inn]

I reviewed a one week holiday in this apartment in July 2012 [see below] and wrote: "My wife and I would happily stay here again." We have just done so, which, coupled with my earlier review, should be enough to encourage anybody to book some time here; the combination of comfort, equipment, location and all-round quality must be almost impossible to surpass. The owners continue to be very enthusiastic about the area and are anxious that visitors should enjoy their time here. They try to ensure that everything necessary, other than food, is laid on, so that, for example, clingfilm, washing powder and dishwasher tablets are supplied. Bus and train timetables are available in the apartment, and there are plenty of up-to-date guides and publicity literature, as well as maps and plans.

Bad Ischl is not situated on a lake, but its position makes it easily the best centre for exploring the Salzkammergut. Except for watersports, it has better facilities than any of the other towns, and public transport is so good that a car is not only indispensible, it should be dispensed with. Even with a suitcase [preferably on wheels], the walk to and from the railway and bus station is easy.

In conclusion: the Salzkammergut is a magnificent holiday region, Bad Ischl is the best centre for exploring it, and this apartment is a splendid place in which to stay.

Comfortable, convenient, complete!

We stayed at this very comfortable apartment for 3 nights. The owners Mike and Jenny, met us upon arrival and toured the apartment with us to explain how everything worked , also gave us advice on things to do and visit. Bed was comfortable, kitchen very well stocked with everything one needed to cook in. A great location to visit the Salzkammergut area and only 10 minute walk into town, very close to ralilway station. Parking available in front of apartment, very convenient. Great internet connection. Nice to have the balcony to enjoy the great weather we had and the beautiful views . We would definitely recommend this apartment to anyone who is coming to this area.

Perfect location, good sized & well maintained apartment and two wonderful hosts

The description & photos of the apartment were accurate so no unexpected surprises on arrival.

The apartment was super clean and in excellent condition. Good quality linens were provided and bath & kitchen linens were changed after 5 days in our 7 day stay. This was fabulous and unusual in our previous apartment stays.

A good sized balcony which caught the afternoon sun, great for drying our washing or a drink with nibbles after a hard day out. There was a parking spot provided with the apartment but we didn't need it. Good TV facilities which our hosts upgraded (increased English channels) during our stay. The location was super, 7mins to a Spar supermarket walking along the river and thru a cool treelined path or a 5min walk to the train & bus station made it all so easy to get around.

Our hosts were lovely, super helpful prior to our arrival & during our stay, they couldn't do enough to make sure you would enjoy the apartment or the town of Bad Ischl and its surrounding areas. We thank them for helping our stay to be so memorable.

We recommend this apartment and the town of Bad Ischl it has many charms and must do activities as well a great base for visiting Hallstatt, St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, Salzburg, many wonderful walks around beautiful lakes like Gosausee and others.

Its a place to stay and enjoy a wonderful magical area full of many pleasures Summer or Winter.

Bad Ischl lies nestled in the heart of the Salzkammergut, at the confluence of the rivers Traun and Ischl. It is a spa town, and because of its climate, was chosen as the ideal spot for the summer retreat of the Kaiser whose former home can be visited today.

The Salzkammergut itself is Austria´s Lake District. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Austria being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Within twenty minutes drive are Hallstatt and Lake Wolfgang.

In winter, there is skiing at Dachstein West or at Postalm (Europe’s second largest high mountain plateau). Both resorts are suitable for all ages and abilities. And of course there are the advent markets, particularly round Lake Wolfgang where you can enjoy a day travelling between them by boat.

Or why not consider a day trip to somewhere further afield, such as historic Salzburg, Linz, Graz or Berchtesgaden, where you can visit the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) and the Königsee. If you have time, take a boat trip along the Danube, or visit the Czech Republic.

Golf: Golf is available at the Golfclub Salzkammergut (5km), and at Mondsee (30km), set in a wonderful position alongside the Mondsee Lake.

Ski: Extensive downhill skiing is available at Dachstein West. There are also extensive langlauf (cross country) facilities at many places within the area - in the winter it is possible to ski almost to Bad Ischl from Lake Wolfgang. If you have a mixture of downhill and langlauf skiers in your party, both Dachstein West is ideal, with both facilities available.

There is a ski bus linking Bad Ischl with Dachstein West, and there is a daily minibus service to Rettenbachalm for cross country skiing.
