Rainbows, sheep and peace. What a lovely stay we had in beautiful Polgarrie. The home is very comfortable and the wonderful artwork was an added bonus. We would highly recommend this place as a fantastic getaway.

Peaceful home in the highlands

  • 5 of 5

Polgarrie house was exactly what my family was looking for. Peaceful location, a beautiful home, and an abundance of history and walks nearby. The house has everything necessary and more. The beds very comfortable and since we were surprised with snow, we enjoyed the efficient heating! We found lovely restaurants in nearby Dornoch and Tain and took day trips to Loch Ness and Skye. Bring your wellies and enjoy the views!

Fabulous HomeAway from it all!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderfully comfortable and welcoming country home. The views are fabulous from every room, the silence is awe-inspiring and the air is so pure and clean. Beds are very comfortable and the house was warm and cosy, well maintained and very well equipped. Plenty of room for 7-8 people. We had incredible weather for the time of year and enjoyed walking and cycling in the local area. Don’t miss the distilleries, the beautiful town of Dornoch, the climb to the top of Struie Hill. We stayed pretty close to Polgarrie but this is also a great location for a an exploration of the Highlands from the Black Isle to Skye to John O’Groats.

Thank you Kate for accommodating us at such short notice

Sunny , quiet cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is tidy, comfortable, sunny, and friendly. Long driveway through a farm leads to a private gate to keep the sheep out. Beautiful yard and scenery and walks amoung the sheep and stone ruins right out the back door.

Fantastic highland experience

Kate and Mark's holiday house is fantastic, remote yet quite close to Tain for supplies, pubs, etc - the house is very well stocked with all the necessary equipment and gadgets for an enjoyable stay - great views out to the heather covered hills

Traditional yet modern and practical - a real home

An appreciation of Polgarrie House

Away and yet close to it all – what more could one want?

Balblair distillery less than a mile away and Glenmorangie just a bit further – no need to go anywhere else to sample two of Scotland’s best whiskies.

On a more practical note, for daily supplies there is Lidl and petrol at the entrance to Tain and as you leave Tain on the Inverness road there is Asda.

Polgarrie house is modern and comfortable – we felt like it was our home from the moment we walked in. The pictures on the Home Away website are a perfect representation of the house and its interior. Furnishing is generous, beds comfortable with good hot water pressure in the shower and bath. If you are arriving at night the instructions you receive will be more accurate than your GPS which will take you up a wrong turning at the last moment. Do some basic shopping for breakfast before you arrive. This early July was a bit cold, so the efficient heating was appreciated. A plentiful supply of tourism literature helped us to select our daily forays – we made it to the Isle of Skye and even across to the Orkneys in easy day trips. If you miss the city, then a day in Inverness will satisfy you. We visited two Castles – Dunrobin, the seat of the Sutherlands at Golspie and Brodie not far from Inverness. There is plenty more choice of historical sites in the region.

So Polgarrie House, surrounded by fields with sheep and cattle with views towards heather covered heights is really ideally situated and we managed it all in just a week, including the drives from and back to Edinburgh. If we can manage it next time, we’ll drive all the way from Switzerland with our Sealyham terrier who deserves a holiday in this most spectacular of natural environments.

Polgarrie House lies in a beautiful, peaceful highland glen, with all round views, 45 minutes drive north of Inverness, on the Dornoch Firth, near the Royal Borough of Tain.

Our farmhouse offers the perfect setting for exploring the North of Scotland. Polgarrie itself sits at the bottom of Struie Hill, making it a perfect setting for outdoor activities including hiking, climbing and mountain biking (A well known national trail is just 15Km), exploring archeological sites, or playing badmington on the lawn of its own 1.5 acre grounds. It is ideal for bird watching and also wild game spotting, such as red deer, foxes, hares and polecats have all been seen from the sitting room. There is a stream 100m from the house with a water fall to explore.

Whiskey tours of the nearby Edderton distillery (Ballblair) and the Tain (Glen Morangie) stills as well as tours of the Dunrobin Castle (30 km) are all within easy reach.

The famous Falls of Shin are a 25 Km (25 minutes) drive away, which makes another ideal outing to see jumping salmon.
