Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday farmhouse in La Saulce - Le Château de Gandière

Lg vaulted kitchen/diner/living room. 2 BR, 2 double beds,1 single + 2 sofa beds

Le Château de Gandière once hunting lodge then farmhouse sits on a hilltop in 12 acres of land with panoramic views over the Durrance valley and the Gap-Tallard airfield famous for Skydiving and Gliding.

The lodge offers a Private Terrace and you are welcome to explore the hillside beyond where Sanglier and Deer are amongst the many Wild Visitors.

A large Vaulted room provides Kitchen/Diner/Living room with french TV/DVD. (Please note in the cold months you need to keep a log fire going to keep downstairs cozy, but we provide the wood free of charge.) Stone Spiral Stairs lead to a small Sitting room with Balcony and 2 sofa beds. This gives access to: Bdrm1 with Dble bd and Balcony, Bdrm 2 with Dble mezzanine bed + single bed, and the Bathroom/wc.

Ideal for families with children the lodge provides a spacious base from which to sample the many outdoor activities and local colour the area has to offer.

I live on site so will be here to welcome you and be on hand if required. However the lodge is completely independent and private.

We often have horses on the property so i'm afraid DOGS must be kept on a lead when outside the house.

About Sarah Brearley

I came to France in 1991 to run a small business on the airfield close by. I sold the business after starting a family, two boys 16 and 20. I now work from home and am I now work from home and am studying a university course by correspondence.

Sarah Brearley purchased this farmhouse in 1993

Why Sarah Brearley chose Hautes-Alpes

According to the local tourist office this is one of the most spacious and attractive holiday lets in their area.

It's always given us the sense of freedom that comes from having a lot of space to yourself but at the same time it's conveniently close to the things one wants to do.

The local villages still function as village communities which makes for a very civilised way of life.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We've enjoyed receiving guests from all over the world and all walks of life. Retired couples here for the flavour of France to bands of skydivers here for the excitement.

We adapt around each guests tastes, with some families we've more or less shared children for the week, others are clearly here to enjoy time alone together.

However i think everyone has appreciated there being someone on hand, there's always a question about where to buy something, or eat, best places to swim at this time of year, or a car to be pulled from a ditch!

If you've any questions about the lodge or area please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Have a good holiday

Sarah

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Sarah,

yesterday we arrived safely in stormy and rainy Germany. Thank you very much for the good time in your house and the hospitality.

We enjoyed our stay and the wonderful countryside, and even the Cote d'Azur couldn't come up to it, it was just as cold, only much more traffic...

Nevertheless we enjoyed our holidays.

Peaceful hillside home

  • 4 of 5

The house is wonderfully tucked into a picturesque setting. As a couple, the home was very spacious and provided a great base for climbing at Ceuse and exploring some of the nearby towns (Tallard, Gap, Sisteron, Orpierre, etc). It should be noted that the house is not well situated for walking, and a vehicle is needed for basic groceries and other needs. That being said, there is a wonderful set of markets across from the airfield within a few minutes drive. Not at all the fault of our host, but construction on the drive below the hillside was ongoing and we were a little worried about the potential for a flat tire on our small rental car. Hopefully this will be completed soon. Finally, the WiFi was at times unreliable, but functioned fine for the majority of our stay. Sarah was a hands off host, but available when needed, exactly our preference! All in all, we'd definitely recommend this spot to others!

Relaxing and would recommend!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing stay at this property with our 2 young children. The house itself is very clean and contained everything that we needed for our week's stay. Lovely views from the property windows! The owners were extremely helpful and there was lots to do in the local area and further afield if required. We would highly recommend. Kate and Mark

Unwind among the butterflies (and moths!)

  • 5 of 5

Especially for those with an interest in all facets of Natural History (such as us, being visiting entomologists), this is an ideal base for exploring the Hautes-Alpes region, especially around Gap, the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, Parc National des Ecrins, etc. and for access, is also ideally situated close to the A51 motorway. Sarah and Phil will provide as much (or as little) help and advice as you want and were ideal hosts. We drove down from Geneva, but for most (if flying to France), driving from Marseille is the easiest route. The accommodation descriptions were wholly accurate and the lodge is perfect for those seeking rest and relaxation and a comfortable and quiet night's sleep. One small aspect for consideration is a possible clarification of the precise directions to the property (which we initially misinterpreted), not helped by the local road being in process of being re-laid (and moved!) during our stay. However, this does not detract from what is a great place to stay, whatever your interests and is excellent value for money, in a most scenic, not remote, yet still wild part of France.

Se sentir comme à la maison!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Don´t look any further...

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful lodge is recommended to everyone looking for a very relaxing stay with almost every activity option in the vicinity you might think of. The lodge is well-maintained with fantastic service by the owner, if you need it. You have children? You love the peace of chirping crickets? Want some amazing evenings sitting outside, looking at the mountains, sipping Martini? Don´t look any further. Perfect place for it, especially, if you like airplanes and parajumpers. There is enough of both during the day, but never disturbing. You might easily want to stay there longer as you planned to do.

The Gap region offers an extraordinary variety of activities from Skydiving, Mountain Biking and White Water to Golf and Fishing, from Cheese making to Wolf Watching.

In contrast to Adventure Sports the Culture of the region is expressed through the way of life, Local Markets, Village Festivals and Concerts.

You can decide as the mood dictates and with local knowledge I'm on hand to recommend something which might suit. The villages of Tallard, with it's Chateau, Swimming Pool and Tennis courts, and La Saulce are both within 5 mins drive and provide for everyday needs with several restaurants to choose from.

Gap,18 mins, is the Department Capital and organises lots of Events for Visitors throughout the summer many of which are free.

The Lac de Serre Poncon, 35 mins, provides an almost seaside ambiance with it's beaches and Water Sports.

Other Activities: Adventure Sports, Water Sports, Air Sports, Climbing, ViaFerrata, Aviation, Skydiving, Gliding. Horse Trekking, Walking and Hiking, Concerts, Markets, Fishing.
