About the property

Melbury & Hardy Chalets

Melbury and Hardy are two of four Scandinavian style timber framed chalets.set in the grounds of a working dairy farm surrounded by Blue Spruce trees. Melbury has it's own six seater hot tub on the veranda with a wooden gazebo and trellis for all year usage.

Hardy is slightly smaller than Melbury but also has three en-suite bedrooms. Please be aware that Hardy does not have a hot tub.

Melbury and Hardy chalet at Stour Cross Farm are situated on a working dairy farm. We milk approx 140 black and white Freisian Holstein cows twice daily. During the summer months most of the calves are born of which a third are Freisian. These are hand reared by myself and often get spoilt with affection. They become very friendly and don't mind being groomed or cuddled. This seems to set them up right when they join the herd. The cows are housed in a barn over the winter and turned out to grass in spring until November. Melbury looks out on some of the fields and guests are delighted when they wake up in the mornings, pull back the curtains and see all the girls grazing. Some guests have never seen cows before let alone stand within 2 ft of them. Don't worry, there is a fence and although they are very inquisitive they are quite harmless.

We are happy for any visitors to watch the milking in the afternoons. It is a fasinating process to watch.

North Dorset Location: Melbury chalet at Stour Cross Farm sits on top of a hill just outside West Stour village.

It is centrally placed for many attractions which can be reached easily by car. The village itself is very friendly and hosts many fun fund raising events. The local free house pub boasts excellent cuisine and fine ales.

Within the grounds of Melbury and Hardy are two other chalets. Duncliffe and Wessex. All sleeping six with their own parking and surrounded by Blue Spruce Fir trees.

Our games room is available for our guests.. It consists of a table tennis table, Table football, large connect 4 and air hockey. For the little ones they can play on the car mat with a selection of cars.

What makes this chalet unique

Melbury has a contempory style interior with all the mod cons and en-suite facilities. There are some fantastic views at different angles and being on top of a hill overlook some of Thomas Hardy's Blackmore Vale.

Melbury chalet is unique in that it has it's own hydrotherapy spa bath on the veranda and is popular in the evenings after a busy day sightseeing.

Hardy chalet has recently been refurbished throughout with new wet room to the downstairs bedroom. The first floor has a double room with own balcony and en-suite shower over bath. The twin room has en-suite shower room. The kitchen has had a bit of a revamp and apart from new appliances a new extended tiled floor allows the dining table more room. The open plan lounge has two brand new leather reclining sofa's and a stylish black glass fronted simulated coal fire.

Both chalets are situated on the borders of Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire and allow easy access to many attractions.

Beautiful accommodation in fantastic location with helpful owners

Perfect New Year break for three thirty-something couples. The hot tub was lovely, the fields were fantastic. The owner even let us feed the calves! Well equipped and thoughtful accommodation. Highly recommend!

The perfect break.

Chris and Martin are the perfect host and the lodges are the best we have stayed in. Very clean and they have everything you could ever need, even a washing machine. The farm was fabulous for the kids and they loved seeing he calves being born(even Wayne enjoyed getting stuck in delivering some calves) The kids (and me and my wife) loved seeing the cows being milked and it was great that Martin asked our kids if they would like to feed the calves their milk. The lodges are an ideal base to just stay and relax or if you want to see the sites like monkey world and the tank museum etc they are not to far away. The local pub offers great food and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming.

We will definitely be looking into going back as soon as we can and would recommend these holiday lodges to any one.

very nice but not perfect

  • 4 of 5

The lodge was very nice but I would have liked a zip and link bed for the master bedroom, also the shower cubicles were a bit on the small side.

The owner is very nice and helpful

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comment. We appreciate the double beds are of a standard size but we will be looking to upgrade to a king size in the master bedroom that will match the other beds in the chalet. Unfortunately we are unable to provide larger showers in the upstairs bathrooms as the ceilings slope, restricting the size of the shower cubicles.

This rental property was delightful. Set on the top of a hill with wonderful views, it was a clean, well furnished and very comfortable home to stay in. Ten minutes from Shaftesbury and within easy traveling distance to Salisbury, Sherborne, and many National Trust properties. A great opportunity to spend time in one of the most historic and beautiful areas of England. Christine and Martin were very welcoming and helpful. Would not hesitate to rent this property again
