About Margaret Forde

A psychologist specialising in Positive Psychology and a long time francophile. I had spent many holidays in Provence, particularly in the St Tropez area, and had even conducted aromatherapy courses in the lavender growing areas of Provence around Forcalquier. Collioure for me was a great find as it combined the traditional type of French town only found inland in Provence ( the Riviera has been overrun with high rise apartment blocks!) with a sea side location .

Margaret Forde purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Margaret Forde chose Collioure

We chose this apartment because of its location: we looked at much bigger apartments, with sea views, along the coast road but they were a mile from the town, and would mean driving into Collioure in the evenings ( with consequent parking difficulties, not mention rows over who would be the designated driver!). The location offerred great flexibility, as we had teenage children at the time, who wanted to 'do their own thing' . As we mainly felt we would be coming to Collioure in the 'off-season' we wanted to be in the thick of things, and not to have to being a car if we were staying for an extended period.

Apartment with a perfect location

  • 3 of 5

Handy little apartment perfectly located a few yards from the beachfront and centre of town. Fairly basic apartment but has all the necessary facilities required and enough space for a family of four to function. Great balcony for dining and lazing in the sun.

Collioure was fantastic. Fetes de Saint Vincent was in full swing and the town was buzzing with events and entertainment throughout the day and in to the early hours. Plenty to see and do around the town and several beaches to chose from.

Only slight downside, is that the apartment does not have private parking and it can be a battle to find parking if the free public residents car park is full. Had a great time.

Apartment Jardin des Domincains

  • 4 of 5

Perfect location.Apartment a little small for 4 adults and rather old fashioned but made up for by proximity to all amenities. We did not hire a car and did not find this a problem -used public transport throughout, which was generally good (although buses and trains finish very early c.7.45 pm and taxis are very pricey).

A good experience - recommended.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay, Jonathan. -The nearness to everything is the reason I bought this apartment. I agree on size-the apartment is probably best for 2/3 adults, or two adults and two children!

Un beau séjour

  • 5 of 5

A small but perfectly-formed apartment a few steps from the beach, which accommodated our whole family, including three teen-aged sons. The large terrace was perfect for apéro before heading out into the lively, good-natured town. There was plenty of information about activities in the surrounding area. We went to see (and take part in) the castellers (human towers) in Les Angles one afternoon, which is the most moving thing I have done for years.

The sofa bed in the lounge was the height of comfort and our boys fought over who would sleep there. The master bedroom felt very luxurious, with French doors onto the patio.

Collioure is a lovely, lively town, but the apartment is very peaceful and tranquil. Here you have peace and quiet whilst being moments away from the heart of the action - live music and entertainment in the streets, markets and a whole range of restaurants and bars to suit your budget.

We had a wonderful stay and certainly intend to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Jeanne. We re-furnbished the apartment this year, so good to know it was all appreciated! So glad you and your family had such a good time. I never heard of the Human Tower- must investigate the next time I am down there!

Very compact comfortable and cosy

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful to be so near the town, the sea and walks. It was so easy to walk to the nearby many restaurants at night for dinner. The property was compact with all the required appliances provided. Loved the terrace and enjoyed all our breakfasts there,- an extension of the living room. The apartment was bright with lovely choice of furnishings. However for me the bed was most comfortable and clean. Looking forward to going again already.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Deirdre for your comments and glad you enjoyed your stay, and that you were able to have your meals out in the balcony, even though it was early in the season. I am really glad that you found the bed so comfortable as you were the first to use the new pull-out sofa bed!

Apartment Collioure

  • 4 of 5

Apartment was accurately described, it was cosy and convenient and quite comfortable, it suited our needs for the week. It was clean and well presented. We would recommend it to others. This area of France is both interesting and different with a Catalan flavour, restaurants are very good as is the food quality, overall it was a good experience.

Owner's Response: thanks, John. Glad you enjoyed your week, and found the apartment so convenient! And yes, I agree : there is a great choice of restaurants in Collioure, and the prices are so much better than the Riviera!

Neat, clean and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

I spent a really enjoyable weekend in this lovely apartment last summer. The bed was really comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked and the balcony was the perfect place to have dinner overlooking the beautiful town of Collioure. The sea is only 3 minutes away and the old town is a very enjoyable 10 minute walk along the seafront. The owner of the apartment, Margaret was very friendly when I spoke to her over the phone and gave us some great recommendations of places to eat. Collioure is the quintessential french town and I would recommend all travellers to visit it and stay in Margaret's perfectly located apartment.

Port d'avall
Car: not necessary

The great advantage of this apartment is its location in the Port d'Avall area :one minute walk to the best beach AND to the local boulangerie, shops and cafes. It is ideal for eating out in the evenings, with many local bars and cafes. A five minute stroll alongside the chateau walls brings you to the bustling centre with even more choice. As everything is accessible on foot, it offers great flexibility, if different family members vary in the amount of time they like to spend on the beach!

The apartment itself is in a small 3 storey block. Although only one row back from the bustling sea front, it is in a quiet area, with a balcony overlooking the peaceful hillside, ideal for lounging, or for a leisurely meal in the evening, sampling a glass of the local wines from the cellier next door.

Collioure itself is the jewel of the 'cote vermeille,' with its great Chateau Royale, its Byzantine style church with foundations below sea level, its romantic cirques and coves, its winding pedestrian streets, with balconies tumbling with geraniums, bougainvillea and petunias, with myriads of restaurants, traditional shops, and artists' studios, its nooks and crannies and arches offering glimpses of the sea at every corner. The town has been left so unspoilt as it was painted by artists such as Matisse and Derain, and the local council have a strict preservation policy so there are no high rise buildings to spoil the views, just the traditional cottages in cream or pink, with terracotta roofs. Everywhere you go, there are easels with empty frames you can look through to see what the artists saw.

You can hike to the fort or a shorter stroll brings you to the windmill, both of which vantage points offer stunning views over the bay of Collioure. The beach offers safe bathing, and for the more adventurous, there is a diving school.

The proximity of the apartment to the beach and facilities means you don't need a car, and you can avail of the local bus to bring you to the neighbouring towns of Port Vendres with its marina, where you can hire a boat to take you down to Spain, if you feel like it, or to Banyuls, the yachting centre that is also home to the famous dessert wine, a thalassotherapy centre and with a marine reserve off shore.

Collioure can also be used as a base to tour the Costa Brava, with Figueras and its Dali museum, Girona , and further afield, Barcelona, well worth a visit.

For those with a car, there is an aqua park near St. Cyprien, the historic château of Perpignan, and you can make day trips inland to the Pyrenees, taking in the beautiful walled town of Villeneuve de Conflent or the ski resorts of Font Romeu or Andorra or you can take the historic 'little yellow train' high into the mountains.

The whole area is a centre for hiking, with numerous marked trails and stunning views.
