About the property

Book now for a romantic Winter or Christmas break.

This property has been graded a Good 4 Star **** in accordance with Visit England's Self-Catering Criterion.

The Pavilion is a luxury self-catering cottage for two people set within the stunning grounds of Brunger House (c1540), overlooking the tennis court. Tastefully decorated, the Pavilion offers open-plan living with a fully fitted kitchen, dining area with log burner for cosy winter evenings snuggled up on the luxurious sofa, living area, bedroom with french door opening onto a pretty patio and shower room. The front double doors open onto a delightful veranda that benefits from all day sun in the summer.

The Pavilion will be adorned with beautiful festive decorations during the Christmas period. A fully fitted kitchen with dining area and selection of games and TV will enable guests to spend a magical Christmas in the grounds of a Grade 2 listed House that really lends itself to Christmas.

There is ample parking at Brunger House. One well behaved Dog allowed at £10 cash per night but must be kept on a lead in the garden due to the pet runner ducks (who don't fly). Lovely walks start just across the road from the house.

With French furniture, ornate mirrors, designer soft furnishings and white plantation shutters, The Pavilion provides the perfect place for a romantic break. Located a good distance from the main house to ensure privacy but near enough should guests require any assistance. Guests have full use of the beautiful gardens, including a parterre with roses, a fountain, natural pond and tennis court. For those animal lovers, guests can interact with Junior & Marmite, the two Indian Runner Ducks, or Snoopy the Border Terrier. It's not uncommon in the Spring/Summer to see ducklings waddling around the garden too.

Tenterden with its charming tree lined main street, traditional white clad buildings and independent shops is only a 15-20 minute walk from Brunger House. The town offers a range of country pubs, restaurants, quaint tea rooms, as well as The Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway where you can take a trip to Bodiam Castle, or take a tour around The Old Dairy Brewery or Chapel Down Vineyard, with its award winning wines.

The Pavilion is also perfectly located as a base for exploring Kent & East Sussex. The nearest Coastline is only 10 miles from Tenterden. Tenterden is a perfect base for exploring quaint Kentish & East Sussex villages & towns, visiting some of the many National Trust Houses & Gardens, experiencing or wine or cider tasting at one of the local Vineyards. There are some lovely walks and cycle routes around Tenterden for those guests who enjoy the outdoors.

For guests with an interest in old houses, the hosts would be happy to provide a tour of the main house. Two rooms are also available in the main house (excluding Christmas) to accommodate larger groups, or for couples with children, we can offer a camping experience for children, with a tent erected by The Pavilion.

Facilities: TV, dishwasher, sink, four ring electric hob & oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, Wifi, BBQ, sun loungers, garden table and chairs, crisp white bed linen, fluffy white towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, sponge, hand soap and shower gel.

Why Jo Cottam chose Tenterden

Brunger House is Grade 2 Listed and was built in c1540. It is of historic interest. Brunger House was formerly known as Brungar Farmhouse and features in the book ‘Timber & Brick Building in Kent’ by Kenneth Gravett (1971); “Crow-Stepped gables are found on a group of buildings in Tenterden, all dated by Lloyd to the period 1530-1540, although it is possible thy are a little later. Brungar Farm is entirely in brick with one stepped gable, moulded brick windows and a different gable to the porch. Although the brickwork is, correctly English Bond, the windows have been altered along the front and it is possible that this house was once partly timber-framed like Bax Farm, or even an earlier timbered house reconstructed”. It is rumored that Brunger was once a Dower House to Hales Place, Tenterden. The Master Bedroom has a piece of original plaster that has been framed with artwork detailing the initials EH, dated 1615 which is a reference to Edward Hales, son of John Hales, MP & Baron of the Exchequer.

We moved to Tenterden in January 2013 after Jo fell in love with the house & garden. Jo’s Mum, Pat and her Border Terrier Snoopy live in Brunger Cottage, just a few meters away from the main house. Since moving here, the Cottage has been renovated & we are just starting to make some internal improvements to the main house. This will provide further accommodation options for our guests in the future.

The original Wisteria covered Pavilion was a charming addition to Brunger House but was not suitable for renovation to a holiday let. We are confident that the new Pavilion will look just as quaint as it ages over the years and the Wisteria starts to grow again.

Romantic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Nice small summerhouse in the owners beautiful garden. Fully equipped kitchen with all the utensils you need to make a gourmet meal. Wood burner for the colder evenings and BBQ outside with charcoal ready to go. Lots to see around walked to Tenterden about 20" lots of nice shops, steam trains and museums we did the old dairy brewery tour which was great with big samples I don't drink beer but still enjoyed. Visited canterbery, Leeds Castle, vineyards and beaches. Everything great although the TV is too far from sofa to watch maybe a bit of rearrange of the furniture would be a good idea. Would definitely go back if in the area and will reccomend to other couples.

Owner's Response: Thank you Shereen for such a lovely review and glad you enjoyed your stay. When designing the Pavilion we wanted to ensure the floorspace was as open plan as possible to provide a sense of space. After several attempts at furniture moving, we felt the current layout best suited the room. Guests are most welcome to move the sofa closer to the TV should they wish if their visibility is hampered by the current lay out. We do hope you will come and visit again.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our weekend staying at The Pavillon. The property was a good size, tucked away within the grounds of the owner's house. It's newly decorated and was very fresh, light and very romantic! The kitchen was well-stocked and had everything we needed. Jo and Simon couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating and the local area had a lot to offer with Chapel Down winery and the lovely town nearby. Highly recommended!
