About Mrs Julia Sterling (England) Mrs Clare Ivey (Italy)

My sister, Clare moved to Acquaviva over 20 years ago and my family have been visiting her there ever since. When it got to the point where our two families had expanded to such a degree we needed another house. Clare, who has many years experience in the Hotel trade had a dream to run her own holiday home. We needed someone to look after our place. So the two dreams merged and the search for the right home began. We bought Cielo Aperto in 2008 and spent the following year furnishing it. Our first guest arrived in 2009 and we are delighted to say our returning guests expand in number every year.

Mrs Julia Sterling (England) Mrs Clare Ivey (Italy) purchased this house in 2008

Why Mrs Julia Sterling (England) Mrs Clare Ivey (Italy) chose Acquaviva Picena

We were looking for a property that was part of the old town and full of character. We wanted it in Acquaviva as we could be walking distance from my sister. We wanted it at the top of the hill and had to face south so we could see that amazing view. We decided to call our home Cielo Aperto which means Open Heaven or Open Skies. We feel we are a little closer to heaven up there and the skies go on and on!

What makes this house unique

We feel Cielo Aperto is so special as you find yourself in the heart of an old Italian village. Yet in 5 minutes you are by the sea or in the heart of a thriving little town. The mountains, which you see every morning from your bedroom window is an hour away.

The layout of the house suits any combination of visitor whether it is a couple enjoying a romantic break staying in the self contained middle floor or an extended family which needs the space to spread out over the full three floors of the house on their holiday.

Totally fabulous

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in this beautiful and quaint 3 story house in Acquaviva Picena. The accommodation is extremely comfortable and homely, tastefully furnished and very well equipped with kitchenware and a washing machine. The village is lovey and a 10 minute drive to the beaches of San Benedetto and Grottonmare. We loved our stay and have made another booking for July 2018. Highly recommend this beautiful home.

Thanks For The Perfect Italian Family Holiday!!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you to Clare for ensuring that we had the most amazing authentic Italian family holiday,

I'm still dreaming of the view from the garden sitting with a sun downer in hand overlooking the snow capped mountains & the ocean with countless olive trees in between - Bliss :)

We were so lucky to find a well run guest house like Cielo Aperto that suited having a baby with us and we were able to cater for ourselves in the fully equipped house with a fully functional kitchen where we spent alot of time eating amazing food, we loved going to all the local spots in Acqua Viva & San Benedetto for fresh pasta, meats from the local butcher, cappachinos & pastries and drinking amazing local wines!!!

The recommended seafood restaurants on the beach were an absolute highlight, having 10 courses of the most insane fresh fish, prawns, calamari was something you have to have at least once in your life!! thanks for organizing this for us Clare!

Having a local like clare who knows the area so well makes it extra special as she is so passionate about where she lives and knows all the best spots to go, there are so many little towns in the area and clare knows the gems!

Being 10 minutes from the beach & 30 mins to the beautiful mountains is just perfect, Clare also recommended a day trip to conero/Loreto which was also amazing!

if you looking for a well priced guest house with great service for a family holiday then Cielo Aperto is highly recomended.

Thanks again Clare and keep in touch!

Magnifique maison

  • 4 of 5

Einfach toll!

  • 5 of 5

Acquaviva Picena is a traditional Italian Medieval village dating back to before the 13 century. Its fortress is one of the outstanding features of the Marche region. The well preserved ancient churches, the Town Hall and other local buildings have won the village a place in the coveted Bandiera Arancione selection of 'must-see' Italian villages.

The many restaurants, all within walking distance of Cielo Aperto, produce a delicious range of local specialities. The home-made pasta shop, bakeries, greengrocer and local wine outlet give you the option of cooking at home if you prefer a romantic night on the balcony.

Being strategically positioned on the hill, the views are breathtaking - from the Adriatic Sea, over the olive groves and vineyards to the Appenine Mountains of Abruzzo in the distance. Children will enjoy the playground by the fortessa or in summer going down the water slides and splashing in the pool of the local hotel.

A 5 min drive takes you to San Benedetto del Tronto, a seaside town and fishing port on the Adriatic Sea. Whilst not on the international tourist routes, this town is very popular with Italian visitors for summer holidays. The sandy Blue Flag beaches are lined with over a hundred different beach chalets on the 'Riviera della Palme'. Here you can hire a couple of deck chairs and a beach umbrella and eat at the many restaurants that offer seafood specialities. A cheaper option is to take your own towel and sit on the one of the many free beaches. Over 10 kilometers of pedestrian and cycling paths, next to the seafront, have been recently renovated with beautiful landscaped gardens. You can cycle from Porto D'Ascoli in the south to Grottammare in the north. Bicycle hire facilities are available on the beach front. San Benedetto is also known as the seafood capital of Italy. A fleet of fishing boats head out daily from the small harbour, and return with the day's catch to supply the local markets and restaurants. Visitors can visit the fish market in the morning to buy the freshest fish.

Surrounding Acquaviva are other typical Italian villages, including Monteprandone, Monsampolo, Ripatransone and Offida. You can sample their traditional seasonal dishes and local wines at the wine producers outlets or during their open air 'sagras' - festivals that celebrate local food and culture at different times of the year. Offida is particularly famous for hand made lace. The ladies of the village sit in the street outside their houses, making delicate and intricate lace patterns. The former convent of San Francesco now houses the Enoteca Regionale della Marche, where you can taste the regions finest wines. Ripatransone, a local rival on a hilltop across the valley, features magnificent views of its own. Monsampolo is know locally for its excellent butcher, who offers superb speciality products.

A little further inland is the village of Comunanza, which specialises in truffles. You can arrange to walk with local guides and their dogs to hunt for truffles, and sample your find during a specially prepared lunch in the village restaurant.

Ascoli Piceno is the capital of this region of the Marche. This ancient Roman town is a 20 minute drive inland. Walk through the streets and find one ornate and beautiful building after another, and an antiques market in the city square. In the beautiful ancient Piazza del Popolo on the first Sunday of August, they hold the world famous Palio which is the re-enactment of a Medieval jousting competition, 'La Quintana'. Here you will also find the Caffe Meletti , famous for its Art Nouveau interior and an internationally recognised aniseed liquor which has been made by the Meletti family for generations. Order a cappucino or an 'anisetti', served with a coffee bean.

In 40 minutes you can drive into the mountain regions and swim in the outside thermal waters or have a Spa treatment at Acquasanta Terme.

In the height of summer there is an open air water park at Tortoreto, a half-hour drive down the south coast.

An hour north is the world famous Loreto cathedral, and a short distance inland, the Grotte di Frasassi - huge caves featuring magnificent limestone formations. Treat yourself to opera in the open air theatre at Macerta.

In winter the ski resorts are a 2 hour drive away - the nearest is San Giacomo Monte Piselli.

Coaches leave daily for day trips to Rome from San Benedetto or you can drive there yourself in three hours.

The nearest airports are the Abruzzo International Airport at Pescara and the Falconara Airport at Ancona. Pescara airport is 70 km south of San Benedetto. There are direct flights with Ryanair to Barcelona, Brussels, Cagliari, Dusseldorf, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, London, Milan, Oslo and Paris from Pescara. Ancona airport is an hour and a quarter drive north (90 km). There are direct flights to Alghero, Brussels, Dusseldorf, London, Madrid, Stockholm, and Trapani from Ancona.
