About Michael Durham

We are a retired journalist and medical professional. We bought the house as a holiday home in 2005, but love Abruzzo so much we want to share it with other travellers. We have been renting the house out since 2009, but it has been ‘offline’ for two years during redecoration, refurnishing and improvements. We live in London and visit several times a year.

On arrival, guests will usually be met and escorted to the house by our bilingual English-speaking local agent (the house can be hard to find), but if this is not convenient, guests can gain access by using a secure key safe. Guests will usually be visited by our agent on the day of departure.

During your stay help is always available from our agents or from a key-holder living in the nearby village (we always ensure an English speaker). In an emergency, they will be able to offer support in person or by telephone. They may also be able to help with local information and advice, and we also supply a ‘House and Area Guide’. If necessary we can be contacted by phone, text or over the Internet in London.

Our regularly updated Area Guide includes recommendations for local restaurants and bars, activities and day trips. A good selection of maps, guide books and walking guides are available to consult at the house.

Why Michael Durham chose Civitella Messer Raimondo

We have been visiting Italy for many years and discovered this area in 2005

What makes this house unique

We bought the house because of its astounding views and its tranquillity, its setting in a natural paradise, and because of the warmth, generosity and courage of our Italian neighbours.

Casa della Meridiana is a comfortable retreat in open countryside in the foothills of the Majella Mountains, an area of great scenic beauty. Whether your aim is total relaxation or something more stimulating, this area has it all.

It's a great location for trekking, walking, cycling, climbing, river rafting, skiing, off-piste skiing and snowboard, or the seaside (35 minutes to the Adriatic).

It’s an excellent base for touring the historic Abruzzo region and the Adriatic coast. Highlights include: ancient hermitages in the Majella Mountains; the classic hilltop towns of Casoli, Guardiagrele, Gessopalena and Torricella; the vineyards of Ortona, home of ‘Montepulciano d’Abruzzo’ and ‘Pecorino’ wines; historic Lanciano; mountain caves, gorges, waterfalls and trails; and the ancient fishing platforms (many now fish restaurants) of the 'Trabocchi Coast’.

Villages with bars and restaurants, traditional shops and a lively street scene are less than ten minutes away, and many hold open air events, firework displays, religious celebrations and food festivals open to all throughout the year.

In central Italy, Casa della Meridiana is well placed for making side trips by rail, coach or car to Rome, Naples, Florence, Bologna or the neighbouring regions of Le Marche, Molise and Puglia.

With its sun terraces, shady eating areas, barbecue, garden and olive grove, Casa della Meridiana is a good choice for families, sun-seekers, walking groups, or more adventurous explorers alike.
