Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Borba - Sobreira House Horta Vermelha

Centuries-old cottage among trees & bees in Borba - sustainable and geo-tourism

You will immediately feel Horta Vermelha’s energy, character and personalised detail. From salvaging used or old furniture, maintaining the whitewash and original pigments, to keeping the Mediterranean weeds instead of planting an artificial high-maintenance lawn, dedicated effort and care were put by both Sónia and João.

The result is a genuine diversity of colours, textures, organic and authentic housing features, while being connected to all beyond the Horta.

The surrounding space offers inviting spots under great cork and fig trees, the Japanese Medlar, amidst the century-old olive grove, the old natural spring under the oldest walnut tree, or the most appreciated eco-friendly refreshing tank. You may walk up the meadow, scent the wild garlic, the spontaneous lavender flowers, and a multitude of other herbs, while spotting the sheep and cows in the vicinity. You may be lucky and see some other companions up there.

We invite you to take in the richness of the area with independent spirit, at your own pace.

Great stay in Alentejo in local style

  • 5 of 5

When I decided to visit Alentejo in Portugal this year, I looked for a house to be built in the local style, with some green space around it (for my kid) and with owners who commit to particular values of sustainability, local development and authenticity. I found all three in Horta Vermelha. Regarding the house, we stayed at Sobreira cottage. The house itself is built in local style, with stone flooring and walls, well restored and decorated with clean style by the owners. In itself it is not a magnificent house; it follows the simple, clean style of a peasant home. The garden was absolutely great. Orchards of olive trees, chestnuts, plum trees, bushes of blackberries, lavender ... for us, it was the best part of the stay. In the morning, we could collect directly from the trees some plums and blackberries for breakfast; in the evening we would eat some nuts or grab some herbs for cooking. We could literally take a walk around the property. My kid had a blast running around. Finally, the property and house are maintained using local knowledge. Insects and weed were kept at bay using natural processes. It gets wild enough to be enjoyable without getting too wild to be annoying. Also a small creek runs through the property, making watering a natural process.

Boa escolha

  • 4 of 5

A little piece of Alentejo paradise

  • 5 of 5

Hidden just outside Beja, you can have the experience of a true Alentejo place: the houses have been magnificently restored, but with respect to tradition, you have plenty of space to walk around and the service is very nice and friendly.

We spent 4 wonderfull days with our children who by the end of our little holiday asked ' why holidays aren't made of 100 days?'.

Owner's Response: Dear Vasco, We are very happy in reading your very kind words, after your stay in April! Just one minor correction - you ment "Borba" and not "Beja". :-) We hope to see you soon, again at Horta Vermelha. Now we have the refreshing recreation pool ready, with running clear waters, some frogs, salamanders and toads!

  • 4 of 5

************************************ Dear Rosangela, Thank you very much for your kind words and very good review. Above all, we are very pleased in knowing that you will return and that Horta Vermelha has made yourself and your family happy. This is particularly important, knowing that you are a especially attentive and demading Guest. To inform all, we clarify that the weeds in the orchards of Horta Vermelha may in occasions be "long". The application of chemicals is reduced to a minimum. There are areas with no application at all. The aim is to make use of the weeds to atract the birds and all insects, making the system as close as possible to a natural equilibrium. This is healthier for the trees and all the rest (all of us). There comes times when those weeds are mowen with the tractor, making space more open of games and good walks in the farm. During Ms Rosangela's stay she saw things with "long" weeds and then "nicely cut" weeds. Horta Vermelha, anyhow, has other weed-clear areas, also garden-like, for best confort of the Guests. About the coffee maker, present in each of the Cottages, it may possibly have been out of sight for some reason. We will deal with this. Thanks very much! Sónia & João

You are in the country, but not isolated. You will be in control of your time and your feelings, whatever you decide to do. You may choose to relax in the private comfort of a centuries-old cottage, with surrounding olive and walnut groves. You may take a day out, exploring the region’s beautiful landscape, world heritage, towns and castles. Or you may go winery hopping, savouring the renowned quality wines.

We invite you to take in the richness of the area with independent spirit, at your own pace. Even if you are in a working mood. Have you imagined being linked to the world under the trees?

Horta Vermelha is located in Borba, in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal, an area many call the 'Provence' of Portugal. The vast plains of the Alentejo (roughly the size of a country such as Belgium) sweep between the Algarve and Lisbon. It is a countryside of endless plains doted by olive trees, cork trees and great vineyards.

Probably the last undiscovered destination wonder in Europe.

Other Activities: bird watching, photography, castles, palaces, World Heritage, vineyards, wine cellars
