About the property

Miner's Cottage, situated in the heart of Calstock Village on the River Tamar.

Writer's Retreat is a spacious 200 year old two bed miner's cottage in the heart of Calstock.

-The space

Hello, this is our Second year offering ‘Writer's Retreat’ to the public for rental. We are excited to greet our new friends and introduce them to the Calstock / Cornwall life style. Our cottage is a fully renovated 2 bedroom traditional miner’s cottage, in a spectacular riverside ‘Area of Natural Beauty’. We have made significant improvements to our cottage this year, and we would like to thank our guests from last year who gave us excellent feed back.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a single pull-out bed in the second bedroom and in the lounge a double futon mattress, see photos.

The cottage is set back from the street so it is quiet and private. Calstock village is a traditional fishing & mining village nestled above the beautiful River Tamar. Cobbled streets, quaint and quirky cottages, tea-room, gallery, art centre, sewing shop, and boat yard are on your doorstep.

There are two public houses, one of which centres on cook to order fine cuisine, whilst the other provides quality food and entertainment. Abundant woodland and riverside-walks surround Calstock, including the trail to the National Trust's Cothele House, which is a thirty minute stroll away. There is an ancient Viaduct spanning the river, frequent bus and train services connect to the outside world. If you managed to watch the TV Drama, "Delicious", you will recognise this wonderful village.

Most importantly: This is our home, it is a place of Art, Creativity and Music. We welcome you, and ask you to please treat it as you would your own.

PLEASE NOTE: There is No TV on the premises, but there is free high speed Wifi.

Writer's Retreat, is a fully renovated 200 year old cottage with original features. There is a new wood burner as well as central heating throughout. A bright modern kitchen adjoins the dining room which has a wine fridge, the cottage also features a character lounge, master bedroom and a second bedroom with a single. The kitchen includes Fridge-Freezer, Oven, Hob and Microwave, should you wish to do laundry, a washing machine is at your disposal. Basic essentials such as coffee, tea, sugar and milk, as well as basic cooking needs are provided. Bedding and bath towels are also provided, we do not provide swimming towels. The second bedroom offers electric guitars which the guests are welcome to play during daylight hours.

Writer's Retreat, is Not Suitable for persons with mobility issues as the stairs are steep and narrow, and the toilet is upstairs.

-Guest access

Writer’s Retreat, is just off the centre of the village and only steps away from two pubs, and the Café (a site of the ‘Delicious’ filming,) all with excellent food, There is also an art gallery and a sewing shop. The new food shop is only a few minutes away off the car park. There is bus and train access to Callington, Tavistock and Plymouth.

The centre of Calstock is comprised of the children’s playground and grassy picnic area. There are many walking trails and the opportunity to get out on the river in canoes, (information on arrival). There are also boat trips on the Tamar to and from Plymouth (tide dependant). Information on activities are provided in our welcome pack.

Parking is in the free public car park behind the village hall and temporary parking near the cottage is available for unloading and loading your car.

Note: The Mobile Phone signal in Calstock is not good for some networks! Some mobile phone providers have ‘Wifi Apps’ which work well in the cottage as well as in the café and pubs.

-Interaction with guests

We are happy to greet you on your arrival, orientating you to the cottage and the village. Normally we will be around to answer any questions and will of course see you again to collect the key when you depart.

A beautiful little cottage in a most charming village

  • 5 of 5

The writer’s retreat is a sweet little house in a quiet side road right in the middle of Calstock. It’s close to the river Tamar, offers amazing walks right off the door step, with pubs and restaurants all a few steps away.

The Writer’s retreat has a superbly equipped kitchen and a beautiful fireplace for colder evenings. For us, the location was absolutely perfect. We could conveniently reach the coast as well as go for walks in Dartmoor within 35 mins driving. But even without a car, the Tamar Valley is simply stunning and can be explored from calstock by foot, train or boat. We loved all of it. Thank you Doug and Nicky for making us feel so welcome and at home.

Fantastic place right in the heart of a magical village on the banks of the Tamar

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect spot if you want to get away from it all, but want to be an easy train ride into the centre of Plymouth. Calstock has two pubs, a wonderful vibrant atmosphere and in a location that is idyllic. Writer's Retreat is a lovely minors cottage, right in the centre within a yards of the water and the Tamar Inn. It is well set up will lots of extras that make your stay comfortable. I would go back without a moments hesitation.

Beautiful character cottage in a charming village

  • 5 of 5

Writer's Retreat is a lovely cottage in a charming and very friendly village. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property owners have taken great care to make guests feel comfortable: a really high-end kitchen, great bathroom and very comfortable bed and then, of course, there's the guitars in the music room as an added bonus. The local pub 'The Boot' was very friendly and served some of the best food we have eaten anywhere. Summertime in Cornwall is lovely, but we can imagine going back later in the season to enjoy the log stove and some more of that good pub food!

If you decide to visit in the winter months we will make sure there are plenty of wood for the fire and a warming drink on hand. All the best, Nicky and Doug.
