We loved it!
Great location for exploring Alentejo
Two grandparents, two parents and two grandsons spent a week here as a base for exploring this area of Portugal. We ranged as far east as Spain and as far west as the Atlantic beaches without testing our grandsons' patience in the car. Closer to home, our hosts were able to recommend a couple of terrific local restaurants for the short time we were able to get the boys out of the vast, inviting pool. They told us about a wonderful morning market, found a place for us to watch football on tv w/locals, and were genuinely happy to help us with all our plans. The monte has a great setup for family dinners and evening entertainment and the separate casita gave grandparents a welcome place to retreat. The home is appointed with lovely local ceramics, embroidered linens, and basketry. The yard has fruit trees with lemons ripe for the picking. Our evenings were spent enjoying a dinner on the veranda or playing cards in the kitchen at the kitchen table. It was nice to greet the morning from the upstairs terrace overlooking the surrounding countryside. A comfy hammock was ideal for afternoon naps. And a grassy area served as a great place for the kids to kick around a soccer ball. Whether you're couples on a holiday retreat or a family with kids this is a really lovely home and we will definitely return.
A piece of paradise
This was our second visit to the Monte and this time we stayed for two weeks. Everything was still as lovely as we remembered. The layout of the premises, the beautiful garden, the large swimming pool and above all, the quiet surroundings offering 100% privacy. This house is beautiful both inside and outside with many different areas where you can hang out. The views are lovely and the sunsets stunning. Big surprise is the lovely beach (Praia do Pego) less than an hour away. We will definitely come again!
This beautiful family home and magnificent garden and pool simply exceeded the expectations of us all. We saw all the photos of course but when we got there it was just the same but better. Our family group of 8, four couples, had an amazing holiday here. The rooms were all perfectly arranged so that we all had our own space around the large communal sitting room. Having a separate mini house for us (parents) worked well when the 'kids' wanted to carry on talking and watching films etc. wifi and TV very useful! The garden and pool area were gorgeous, lush planting and fragrant herbs, rich lawn and perfect pool that allowed at least four of us to do lengths at the same time. The grounds allowed for each couple to colonise their own space when the heat of the sun got too much. Lovely outdoor eating area which encouraged a dinner party very night. The BBQ was a bit out of the way. The local village was immaculate but a bit dead in August, however, useful emergency shopping was a bonus. Montemor was moderately local if you dared to exceed the speed limit. A nice and very authentic local town and worth exploring. This is a rural retreat so a bit of a drive to Lisbon and the coast. Evora was beautiful too in the other direction. Joaquim and Ana Maria were utterly welcoming and so keen that we appreciate their family home. Hope to return in not too distant future.
A Little Bit of Paradise
We three couples arrived at Monte S. Pedro after being on the road for several weeks tired and needing some downtime. We were enchanted by the lovely setting and the peaceful fields surrounding the property. A walk through the house and grounds told us we would be well satisfied here.
Lunch the first day at a small restaurant in the nearby village of Sao Cristovao gave us a great impression of the area. All of us are fluent in Spanish, but none of us has Portuguese. A lady at a neighboring table who overheard our guessing at the dishes on the menu came over and graciously helped us through the process and gave us some tips for future such ventures.
Day trips to nearby destinations were wonderful. Monsaraz gave us the experience of a castle/fortress raised by the Knights Templar, and a subsequent visit to the world heritage site of Evora was breathtaking.
Finishing up each day with a refreshing dip in the huge pool, and then a light dinner of wine and cheese on the terrace...it doesn't get much better than this. Thank you Joaquim for your loving care in making the Monte such a lovely and welcoming place. We'd love to come back some day.
