Overview

About the property

4 levels, 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, ocean and rain forest views, moon deck, pool

Located in the middle of the rain forest near Dominical on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast, on 1000+ acre private reserve with pool, balconies, moon deck, and ocean view. Lots of trails and a waterfall. Very quiet house at the end of the road where you will hear only the sounds of nature. High up (600') enough so that it is cool in the evenings and mornings, with a constant breeze from the ocean during the day and a cool mountain breeze at night. You can "camp out" under the stars on the moon deck on the 4th level of the house, where there is nothing between you and the evening sky. Being so far from any city lights, the star show is spectacular. And there are no biting bugs (no mosquitoes/no no-see-ums) so you can sleep peacefully, tracking satellites and shooting stars across the sky, and watching the early morning sun rise over the rain forest. The house is 10 mins from beach and some of best surfing in Costa Rica, and 5 minutes from the Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge, one of Costa Rica's best and oldest ecotourism operations. Also near the Savegre River for rafting and kayaking. Dominical offers nice restaurants and limited nightlife. Manuel Antonio National Park is 1/2 hour away, and the Bahia Ballena National Marine Park is 20 minutes away where you will find some of the best whale watching in Costa Rica.

Air conditioning and gym. Breakfast, housekeeping, and laundry service upon request but not included in the rental fee.

The community where the house is located is very quiet and so, even though homes are very far apart, we need our guests to be quiet as well.... This is not a party house and no illegal drugs or excessive drinking will be tolerated.

This is the REAL deal..... Don't be fooled by others!

If you are looking for an accessible quiet place in nature, make sure you ask the owner lots of questions like: How close to the paved highway is the house? If off the main highway, what is the condition of the road that leads to the house? How many acres is the house on? What is immediately surrounding it? Within how much wild space is the house? What is the distance to the nearest neighbor? What formal conservation practices are in place on the property or in the community? You will find that almost always claiming to be "eco" or completely surrounded by nature, even in Costa Rica, is a bit of a stretch....

Not here. Not with this house... We (the owners) are both conservation professionals and have been all our careers. We bought the property for its conservation credentials and its total immersion in real, wild nature. The house sits on 25+ acres, and is surrounded by 1000+ acres of protected lands. Our community owns its own reserve and has strict environmental rules governing it. Our property has a strict conservation easement on it - as do all other properties in our community. You see and hear no neighbors from our house but you are almost guaranteed to see lots of wildlife. The house is 10 minutes from the main Coastal Highway and the gravel road that leads to our house is well maintained by the community.

Also, if you're looking to book a house in the area, make sure you find a place with a security system and/or with watchman/caretaker presence. Our home has a full time caretaker and access to the community is controlled by an electronic security gate.

Property is managed by onsite manager who lives in a different house on the property and who is available to help guests but also serves to monitor access to and use of the property.

Concierge, meals, and laundry service upon request.

House Rules:

Treat the house as if it were your own...

No wild parties. No illegal drugs.

No pets.

No feeding wild animals including birds, monkeys, sloths, or other mammals.

No smoking in house or on balconies.

Please do not bring sand into house, showers/tubs, or pool. Use outdoor shower in patio by pool to rinse off.

No additional guests other than agreed to in final booking.

Your security deposit will be charged accordingly for the following things: 1) The house or pool is left inordinately dirty, full of sand, or otherwise a major mess; 2) There is evidence of smoking (including smell); and 3) It is clear more guests than agreed stayed at the house.

About Richard Margoluis

We built our house to fit in with the abundant nature that surrounds it. The house is simple, bright, open, with lots of fresh air flowing through it. We are two conservation biologists who work for international non-profit organizations, and we have two kids that enjoyed spending the first 10 years of their lives in a spectacular and unique place. We wish we could still live in our special house in the rain forest, but we ran out of school options for our kids and so had to move to the US at least until they head off to college!

Richard Margoluis purchased this house in 2003

Why Richard Margoluis chose Savegre

Our house is in a very unique community surrounded by 1000+ acres of legally protected rain forest. All of the properties in our communities have a conservation easement on them, meaning owners can not subdivide their lots or do anything whatsoever that will negatively affect forest habitat and wildlife. Since the community was established in the 1990's, forest regeneration has been spectacular and we regularly see all kinds of birds, sloths, monkeys, ocelots, and various other wildlife. Large lot sizes (about 25 acres each) means that you will not see or hear any other house from our property... All you hear are the sounds of the rain forest and the ocean. We bought our property because of the strong and legally binding conservation ethic of our community. Don't be fooled by other places that claim to be ecological or "green". Ask them how much forest surrounds them, and if they have legally protected it in any way...

What makes this house unique

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing! The views, pool, house and owner were all great! The salt water pool was so relaxing and the spaciousness of the house allowed all 4 couples privacy. Thank you for the detailed directions and ideas on where to go and what to do. We didn't want to leave!

Nature lovers paradise

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely loved staying in this home! I did a lot of research before booking this reservation & the home owner was an honest & responsive communicator who was happy to answer all of my questions in a timely manner & went above & beyond to ensure we were settled & comfortable for our stay. My security deposit was also promptly refunded after returning. The home is in a safe & secure gated community, which requires a code to enter. There is a caretaker home next to the property & someone is usually there for added security, they are discreet & friendly & only speak Spanish.

I would recommend this home & area to surfers & nature/wildlife lovers who want to feel immersed in nature. The house looks exactly like the photos & video, the only thing that was missing was the hammocks?

The house is completely screened in & has glass doors, but only the bedrooms are air conditioned, there are no televisions, the electricity occasionally flashes off for only a moment, there is Wifi which is somewhat unreliable but most times works fine, may need to go to certain locations in the home for a better Wifi & cell signal, water pressure & temperature is ok, not always consistent but acceptable, toilets worked well & we drank water from the kitchen drinking water faucet with no problems, bedroom air conditioners worked fine, not a lot of insects-some but not bothersome to us-we kept screen doors shut & glass doors shut at night & did not leave food or drinks except water out as to not attract ants, great pool, one night it rained & the next morning there was a tree down on the path going out from the house, we were able to drive over it & workers cleaned it up quickly, we experienced a minor earthquake-felt like the floor was vibrating slightly & then an aftershock that rattled the windows for only a few seconds, road in is dirt, good condition, only takes 5-10 minutes to get to paved main road-although we stayed in the dry season, does require 4X4, gas station & grocery store & restaurants close by as well a lot of things to do, a gorgeous 3 hour drive from San Jose airport with spectacular views of ocean & mountainsides.

We stayed for only a week, 2 weeks would be better, more things we would have liked to do there. Our favorite restaurants were at Hacienda Baru & Cafe Delicias & take out pizza from the gas station restaurant. We visited Uvita for whale watching & snorkeling, Nauyaca Waterfalls, Rainmaker Conservation Project, & Alturas Sanctuary.

Wonderful Rain Forest Experience with Sounds of Ocean Waves

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home with clean, refreshing pool. Really enjoyed the birds and monkeys in nearby trees. Very close to secluded beach, with no one in sight for miles. Would stay there, again, on next trip to Costa Rica.

A very nice rental and a good value

  • 4 of 5

This property is a very nice rental. It is a well equipped home base for the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The kitchen is well equipped for real cooking, and the rest of the house is quite comfortable, if a little sparsely furnished. The location is very secluded but convenient to Dominical services. Dominical is often a little bit loud and busy, and this property is a perfect escape. It lies well above the beaches, but you can still hear the surf. It is in a gated community of about 10 or so lots, but the only time you see the other residents is when you are coming or going. The salt water swimming pool is an excellent amenity, and stays over 85F without artificial heating. The water and electrical systems are good, the Wifi is good enough to Skype or Facetime. Four of the bedrooms are air conditioned with quality ac units which are quiet. I would suggest bringing your own audio/video equipment, and a sharp Chef's knife.

The owners, Richard and Cheryl are offsite, but very attentive. There are caretakers on site, but they are quite discrete. All in all, this is a good quality, veteran rental property with most of the glitches already worked out. It's well maintained, well managed and perfectly located for a wonderful rain forest escape. Rent it!

We could've stayed forever!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 10 days here and each day that we were there, we realized more and more how special this place truly is. We've visited most of the countries in both Central and South America (this was our second time to Costa Rica), and this place will definitely hold a very special place in our hearts. The house itself is stunning. It's very big, functional, and no detail was omitted when building it. It's clear that this house was built for living in, not just vacationing in. The north american plumbing is a major bonus too!

What we loved most about this place was that it is right in a beautiful rainforest. Even though we were there at the end of the dry season, it was still very lush and green. Unfortunately the waterfall was dried up though. Waking up to the sounds of the rainforest waking up was incredible. We heard howler monkeys most mornings. The main floor of the house is actually the second level and as it's built on a hill, the kitchen / covered patio is pretty much halfway up the jungle canopy, with huge trees just outside the house. Eating breakfast on the patio and spotting toucans and parrots daily was incredible. We even saw spider monkeys in the trees by the house one morning while eating breakfast! And the trails that they have on the property are great. They are nice and wide and very easy hiking (a couple of steep spots where our daughter needed a hand). We spent lots of time hiking through the rainforest and saw tons of wildlife. If you want a truly authentic rainforest experience, without having to share it with a bunch of other tourists, this place is incredible! But despite being right in the jungle, there were hardly ever bugs of any kind in the house.

And the moon deck was fantastic. Every evening we would lie there and look for shooting stars before our late night dip in the pool before bed.

We spent a lot of time in the pool, which had a nice shallow area with benches for lounging, and the kids to play on. And the little surf town of Dominical is only a few minute drive away, and other even quieter beaches minutes away as well. Dominicalito was a great beach for our little ones to splash in the waves and run / crawl around.

I seriously can't even express how special this place is. You have to experience it to believe it. We very much hope to return at some point. Thanks Richard for the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful home!
