The Madeira Region: : Here in the Atlantic Ocean, not too far from the centre of Europe, we find the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. The archipelago is famous for its friendly people, exceptional natural beauty and mild climate. Madeira Islands are just a short trip from Europe, to a destination where you can combine holidays on the beach, in the mountains or in the city. Madeira and Porto Santo are the ideal places to relax and restore the balance of mind and body that you need to face the stress of daily life. Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's 'Jewel in the Atlantic'. The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, crisscrossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length.
Canico de Baixo - Reis Magos:: Caniço de Baixo is the sort of place where you will find peace of mind. The sea and the beach are very close to you all the time, so you can swim whenever you feel like it or just seat down in one of the bars by the sea having a drink and admire the beautiful landscape surrounding you. There is an excellent bus timetable to and from Funchal city, in the case that you do not wish to drive in your holidays. The hotels nearby offer a program of entertainment in the evenings and they welcome visitors The waters of the Garajau Natural Marine Park are a big pull for visitors looking to sample some scuba diving and diving on Madeira. The best of the scuba diving is around Canico de Baixo, and a choice of scuba diving companies hire out equipment, give scuba diving lessons, and organise excursions. The golf courses are within less than 30 minutes driving from the apartment. In the case that you wish to walk in the famous Levadas, there are some in the area.
How to get there:: Transfer to and from the airport can be arranged by us. Once you have cleared customs & collected your luggage, you will be met by your driver in the arrivals hall. Payment can be made direct to the driver. The charge is €20.00 each way.
We spent a week at this apartment and from the first time we saw it we were so excited. The apartment was superbly furnished with every item you could need. It was like "home from home". Beautiful bedding and everywhere was so clean.
The views were lovely and we made so much use of all the balconies eating breakfast in the mornings and sitting in the sun late afternoon enjoying a glass of wine.
The people who met us at the airport drove us round the area so we could get our bearings and was very informative about the places to go and also to eat.
We walked daily (all good exercise) both up to the old town and down towards the coast with the restaurants and hotels. We ate at "Klenks" at least three times and got quite chatty with the owners who again was full of local knowledge. The food there was brilliant as was the local Pizza House.
In all, a very relaxing week full of sunshine, books, exercise and good wine.
We would recommend this 100% and would certainly like to return at a later date.
We stayed at this very clean, well equipped and spacious apartment in June 2013. The owners arranged for us to be picked up (and taken back to ) at the airport by a very attentive local. We were taken around Canico old town to get our bearings - key shops were identified as were a couple of good restaurants. We found this very helpful. The apartment has two balconies with great views out to sea. It is situated part way up the hill between the old town (.75 km uphill and the bay - .5km down). You need good walking legs, a car or a willingness to take taxis or the local bus to get out and about. We took the bus and used our legs. We were much fitter at the end of the holiday. The buses are regular and cheap and there are a lot of taxis. We loved eating at La Terraca in the old town. Good food, excellent service and a free ride to and from the restaurant if you ring and book a table. Prices are reasonable. We also liked the bar in the bay right at the end where a glass of Madeira wine was €1. If you are eating in the new supermarket in the old town has a good choice of fresh produce, etc.. and the bakery has lovely fresh bread and cakes. Funchal, Monte Palace gardens and the cable car are a must. Don't buy a return if you want to do the toboggan run. We also did a tour of the West of the island which was very enjoyable. The Tour Operator in the old town was cheaper and our guide was both informative and funny. We did not hire a car and the sun did not shine as much as we would have liked but we still had a lovely holiday. In summary, a beautiful apartment, an interesting island, plants and flowers that have to be seen, friendly people and lots of experiences and things that are well worth trying (including Poncha). We hope to return.
We were welcomed at the airport and taken on a tour of Canico where shops and restaurants were pointed out to us.On arrival at the apartment we were taken round and shown where everything was.
The apartment was immaculate, furnished to a very high standard, clean and very well equipped. The two balconies were lovely, one for eating and the other for relaxing. The views were amazing. The pool is great and very welcome after a warm day out.The occasions I used it I had it to myself. Showers and the changing room were very good.
The apartment is situated in a position where the village and the bay are within walking distance but for those who can't manage the walk up to the village there is a bus stop a very short distance away There are a variety of restaurants in both directions,Klenks is good and only a couple of minutes walk away. There are a couple of supermarkets in the village and an excellent bakery.
There is a regular bus service into Funchal where you can catch buses to other parts of the island. We travelled by bus for the fortnight we were there and didn't have any problems.
We walked a lot and found plenty of good walks, we especially enjoyed an evening stroll down to the bay and one afternoon walked to the Statue of Christ at Garajau .As my husband suffers from vertigo the Lavada walks and the Cable Car to Monte and the Botanical gardens were a problem for him but I enjoyed them!
Funchal is a delightful place to wander round, The harbour, the park and the Municipal gardens were lovely with plenty of seats where you can just watch the world go by. The best ice cream was the Gelato shop where they sell Italian ice cream.
For a special treat we would recommend afternoon tea at Reids Palace Hotel in Funchal. It is advisable to book and they have a "smart casual" dress code.We also enjoyed Dolphin watching on the Catamaran from Funchal Harbour.
We would certainly recommend the apartment to friends and relatives and hope to visit again ourselves in the future.
We have just spent two wonderful weeks at the Paradisus apartment. Not only is the apartment spacious but finished to a high quality including the furnishings. There are all the mod cons including a utility room with washer/dryer and the kitchen is fully equipped. There are two balconies which are great for outside dining or lazing on sun loungers. The pool was a great addition and had wc and shower facilities too.
This is a very superior holiday apartment you won’t be disappointed. It’s based in a quiet location, gorgeous sea views and is ideal if you want to get away from it all. Only a short walk to many restaurants, shops and the promenade. If you have a hire car there are two supermarkets in the main town as well as other shops that are worth a visit. The bus stops are close by and the buses run frequently to many locations.
The people who manage the apartment are great! They are always there to help if you need them and provide great knowledge of the island. Ensure really good housekeeping services not only to the apartment but the whole apartment complex.
Perfect apartment for a perfect holiday! We will be back!
We have just spent a perfect week in this apartment.
It is so light & airy, very clean & modern, as well as being well equipped. The swimming pool was an added bonus & with 2 large balconies it was tempting not to move!
However, although we didn't hire a car, with bus stops so close & an efficient bus service getting about was not a problem.
The local Spar shop was very handy & within walking distance. The bigger supermarket uphill required a bit more effort, so with heavy bags & some frozen food we caught the bus back!
"Klenks", next door, & "Guiseppes ", a short walk away, offered a good choice of menu. Some restaurants, a longer walk away, offered a free taxi service. We also enjoyed a stroll down the hill to the variety of eateries among the hotels.
A bus ride to Funchal took us into the hustle & bustle of the capital. A pleasant stroll round the harbour & the tempting cafes made a spectacular site. The cable car ride with stunning views & the Monte Palace Gardens are not to be missed.
Buses from Funchal provide transport to other attractions or the local travel agent has details of organised tours with pick ups from hotels in Canico. The Nun's Valley by mini bus was a fantastic sight.
With so much still to see & do we are going back to this apartment!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Paradisus. The apartment was exactly as it was in the pictures, very well furnished and had everything you could possibly wish for as well as being immaculately clean. The agents were very helpful and provided all the information we could need for an enjoyable stay. The area is very hilly and after a day's walking up and down the hills we decided to rent a car, which gave us complete freedom to see many places, as well as save our poor legs! There are many restaurants to try in the local area, all providing good, reasonably priced food. The apartment block is very quiet, which suited us fine, but if you are looking for more excitement this is not the place for you. The only negative I have to give is that there was noisy building work taking place next door which starts at 8 and continues to 6, for 6 days out of the 7 we were there (Sept 2011).
Sightseeing tours, levada walking, botanical gardens, toboggan ride. Funchal covered market and shops, museums, cable car, underrate nature reserve, evening entertainment in nearby hotels.
Golf: Golfers will be pleased to know that the new 18-hole Palheiro golf course is no more than a 20 minute drive. Classic Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys have all been incorporated into the terrain to produce a dramatically interesting course, with stunning views. The spectacular 27-hole Santo da Serra golf course (also known as Campo de Golfe and home to the Madeira Island Open) is also within easy reach. This is Madeira’s oldest golf course. It sits high up on a plateau and is marvellous scenic with inspirational views back up the mountains and out over the Atlantic below.
