About Lee

Lee and Janie, long time Alaskans, opened their home to many visitors for 13 years with their Arctic Loon Bed and Breakfast. This experience encouraged them to continue the tradition of hosting visitors to the Great Land.

Their grown children and grandchildren frequently return to Alaska to once again experience the beauty and magnitude of this unique place.

Lee purchased this house in 1987

Why Lee chose Hillside East

Their home started as a raw piece of land and a dream to build a unique home. Working with architect Jeff Wilson over the course of several years, a plan began to emerge of a unique structure designed to follow the lines of a Swedish Longhouse. Lee and Janie did the lion's share of the finish work to assure each unique feature was lovingly completed. With 24 foot washed tongue and groove ceilings and sculptured saddle walls and arches, the gallery area is stunning.

What makes this house unique

A formal living room and dining room overlook the spectacular Anchorage Bowl and city of Anchorage. The cozy family room features a wood burning fireplace, 65 inch flat screen TV and a Schwinn recumbent bike. The well equipped kitchen adjoins a breakfast nook and an outdoor BBQ deck. The spacious kitchen is set up for casual eating or more ambitious cooking endeavors. With 4500 square feet, the home is ideal for large gatherings.

Excellent accomodations

This is the second year in a row I've brought my ski racing team here to stay during races in Alaska, the house is beautiful and the kitchen is well stocked for a large group. Would love to come back a 3rd time.

Breathtaking views

  • 4 of 5

The house was very comfortable especially for our small group of seven. We had a wonderful time at the house and in Alaska. There was plenty of common area to relax with friends and family. The first floor has amazing breathtaking views of the mountains and far end, Denali Park. The house was close to trails especially the flat top trail. Our favorite spot was the spacious kitchen and dinette area. We liked that the stove is on the island of the kitchen with beige granite and many wood cabinets. We used the dinning room a few times that fit our group perfectly.

The bedrooms are very comfortable with many beds. There was not enough dresser space to put away clothes but there was closets to hang clothes. The bathrooms were very clean although the septic/plumbing system is very sensitive because of the water coming from a well. We had to take fast showers. One toilet kept running all night and it resulted not having water one morning. We contacted the owner immediately and he told us what to do. Problem easily resolved.

We saw moose by the side of the house. It quietly did its thing and barely looked at us.

We are happy that we stayed at a place by the mountains and not in the city since it was actually easier to get to Seward and to other areas that we visited. It was a peaceful and quiet place for us to stay. We were pleased with our accommodations.

The house worked well for our big family who were in Anchorage for a wedding.

  • 4 of 5

We would be super excited to stay in this house again! Loved it! Highly recommend it! I am going to detail the things needing work, but in no way were we disappointed in the house.

The house is big. The views are spectacular. The kitchen has beautiful granite countertops. The kitchen has multiple counter top working spaces. The refrigerator is double wide but not deep. The kitchen pots/pans/plates/glasses/ and any other things in doors or drawers seemed a bit disorganized. We found everything we needed except a a spaghetti drainer. There were 2 coffee makers. The one we used first was broken and leaked hot water all over the counter. The other worked fine. We were told ahead the disposal was not working. This wasn't too much of a bother. All the scraps were placed in the trash can. We didn't use the small trash can under the sink. Cooking for 12 people makes a lot of recycling trash, so we used the large black trash bags and tied one handle around a drawer to hold it up. The kitchen needs a large trash can for this. The sink 2 faucets dripped. These are very minor things. We loved working as a family cooking in the kitchen. If you have a big group it is great. The huge windows fill up the room and run from the den, eat-in, around the kitchen, the formal dining and living room. It is stunning.

The house is a bit dated but the size and views more than make up for it.

We had a 2 year old, 5 year old and 8 week old. There was no lock on the hot tub door. Very dangerous. We bought a child proof door knob holder to keep the little ones safe. We had read the reviews about the hottub never heating over 85 degrees. We experienced the same. We still used it twice.

The bedrooms are all on the lower level. 2 on one side of the rec room and 3 on the other. It worked well for our group.

One bedroom wall shares with the utility closet and heated up that bedroomthe quite hot. We kept the windows open to cool down the room.

Lee was exceptional to work with. Good promo communicator.

We have rented large expensive homes twice a year for many years since we've needed a family home at Christmas and on summer vacation since we were expats living in China for 11 years. We enjoyed this house.

The property had adequate space for our large group and a beautiful view.

  • 3 of 5

Some of the beds were comfortable. The home seems out of date and in need of repairs. Tiles falling off in the bathroom, leaking waterline and mold under the sink in the kitchen, the hot tub took three days to heat up and didn't stay hot and the sauna never worked despite resetting as instructed. The owner was slow to reply because he was out of the country. Check out instructions do not say to put garbage at the end of the driveway, only to dispose of all open food containers. We checked out on Sunday and garbage day was on Thursday per check in instructions, yet negative feedback was given at check out for not putting the garbage at the end of the driveway. While the space was adequate we are very disappointed with how much we paid for a ten day stay considering.

Owner's Response: This guest checked out leaving the house unlocked and thereby totally unsecured. A new leak was discovered by the guest under the kitchen sink and they were kind enough to inform me of it. It was repaired promptly during their stay. The comment about the need for tile repair in one bathroom is appropriate. Repairs are now being arranged. The issues with the hot tub and sauna were both foreseen and remedies were described in the house rules. The hot tub takes a long time to heat up and the sauna heater can trip out which requires a reset button to be pushed. We are in the process of resolving these issues. The guests comments about not being notified that trash was to be moved to the street for municipal pickup on Thursdays is simply not true. The house rules found in the VRBO hospitality section is very specific on this issue. 10 days before the guests checked in, a pdf summary of all house rules was emailed to them which also specifically addressed this rule. VRBO also sent a special email reminder of this requirement to the guest on March 16, the day of trash pickup as they do with all guests. The consequence of guests ignoring this requirement meant a 10 mile trip for our staff to the Municipal Waste Disposal Facility in preparation for a new guest. The Arctic Loon Guesthouse, prior to this review, received (via VRBO, AirBnB and TripAdvisor) seven 5 star ratings and one 4 star rating. i believe this current review is exaggerated and was written by a chagrined guest who received a text message that expressed the owners disappointment about not locking the house at checkout and not tending to the trash.

Wonderful Stay

We grew up in Anchorage and never enjoyed such beautiful views. We will be returning to this house (hopefully in summer next time). Plenty of room for everyone, the house was clean and well furnished/equipped. We had a great stay and will be back.
