Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Megali Mantineia - Eden Farmhouse and Studio

Traditional stone houses with nearby beaches between Kalamata & Kardamyli

The elegant Farmhouse has 2 rustic-style BR (twin and double) to accommodate 4 people comfortably, while the Studio has a double bedroom on the first floor in an exciting open-plan design. The Farmhouse and Studio are part of a 3-house stone property built in the traditional style set in a private terraced olive grove suspended between the sea and the mountains reflecting the rugged beauty of the Messenian Mani. The solid stone walls keep the rooms cool throughout the day without need for air-conditioning. Linen and towels provided. Enjoy spectacular views from the bedroom window or while sipping a cool drink on the farmhouse veranda or just standing anywhere in the olive grove. Making Eden House a base, there are many places of outstanding natural beauty and great historical interest to visit ranging from spectacular Ancient Greek sites as Ancient Messene, monasteries of Byzantium to medieval stone villages in the Mani to the magical Diros Caves and Cape Tenaro which the ancient Greeks believed to be the entrance into the underworld.

Eden House - The Farmhouse: The Farmhouse is a two-storey house built of solid hand-hewn blocks of limestone and marble. At the main entrance there is a north-facing ‘kamara’ an arched alcove which is ideal for escaping from the heat of the sun at lunchtime in summer. The ornate 19thC door leads to the ground floor sitting/dining room and through a stone arch to a well-equipped kitchen There is also a guest lavatory on this level both kitchen and sitting-room open onto a west-facing veranda with magnificent views across the bay. The sitting-room is simply furnished with English Victorian country pieces. Throughout the house there is original artwork on the walls. The interior staircase curves up to a landing opening on to two bedrooms one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. All the beds are hand-crafted. There is a large open loft with wooden beams which adds to the rustic character. The bathroom has a bathtub with ‘telephone’ shower attachment, washbasin and WC.

Eden House - The Studio: The Studio is a small two-storey house built entirely of stone from our land and is entirely open-plan. The main door leads into a small sitting/dining area and through a stone arch one enters a compact kitchen and opposite the bathroom with shower and toilet. A staircase leads from the sitting room to the first-floor double bedroom with one window facing seawards and the other towards the slopes of Taygetos. Like the Farmhouse, the architecture of the Studio reflects the style and spirit of the Avia region and the Outer Mani and its surrounding villages as Kampos or Stavropigio with its Zarnata castle, or Kitries or Doli or Kastania or Tseria. An ideal retreat for a couple or for a writer or artist seeking a place to work in quiet and beautiful surroundings.

Whether you come to stay in the Farmhouse or the Studio, we look forward to welcoming you to what will be your home, here, at Eden House. It is your home for the period you are here, we will fully respect that, and we're sure that you will respond to the serenity of this place. But, it is also a home we have created, with love and respect for everything in it. Some of the furniture is old and, as such, requires the respect given to age. It is a place of beauty and harmony. Therefore, we reserve the right to ensure that the atmosphere of the house is preserved as you find it upon arrival. If, for whatever reason, we find that the tranquillity and grace of the house has been disrupted and little attention paid to what we have attempted to offer to you, we will return a percentage of the fee you have paid, dependent on your length of stay, and will recommend alternative accommodation. For the same reason, we would suggest that this is not a holiday home for families with very young children.

What makes this house unique

Location: ‘Eden’ means ‘delight’ and it is the name we have given to our home nestling in its own olive grove in the Mani in the Peloponnese just a 5-minute drive from the beach and 20 minutes from Kalamata, the capital and chief port of the area. As you ascend the rocky road to Eden House you leave the pressures of the 21stC behind. Here you can forget about connecting to email and reconnect with yourself instead (although Wi-Fi is available). The only sounds you will hear are those of cicadas, birdsong, the barking of distant dogs and goat bells. The scents of wild thyme and oregano fill the air. This is the Garden of Eden. And you are only a 10-minute walk downhill from the village tavernas specialising in local food; a 5-minute drive to the famous sandy beaches of Sandova and its seaside bars; a 20-minute drive to well-stocked supermarkets and the lively and elegant centre of Kalamata where cafés and bars lining its famous seafront provide the night life you might still be missing.

Stunning property up on a hill with a lovely sunset over Kalamata Bay.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful property designed by the owner, beautifully furnished and with a lovely porch to watch the sunsets every evening. The owners could not have been kinder and more helpful and this is our second visit so much did we enjoying staying there last year. The house is within easy reach of beaches, tavernas and Kalamata.

Very peaceful and beautifully designed.

  • 5 of 5

Colin was a wonderful host and he and Andrew have built a beautiful home. The living room is very spacious and leads onto a beautiful terrace. For art lovers like us the collection of pictures on the walls is a great pleasure. The nearest beach is 10 minutes away and close by there are several, good family run tavernas. This part of Greece is really very unspoilt and the holiday makers are mainly Greeks.

Beautiful, peaceful place with delightful owners

  • 4 of 5

This property is set high over the bay and enjoys the most wonderful view of the sea and glorious sun sets every night. It is in the middle of olive groves and very peaceful and beautiful. The house and studio are simple but well designed and are surrounded by fruit trees and lavender. The owners are a delight and offer marvellous suggestions for excursions and restaurants. The area is wonderful with ancient sites, unspoilt beaches and tavernas and stunning scenery. We cannot wait to return. My only quibble is this glorious isolation comes at the price of a steep road to the property, some of it without tarmac. But it is a price worth paying.

Notes:
There is a large loft with wooden beams above the first floor. There is a utility/laundry room on the ground floor which the owners will require occasional access to by mutual arrangement. Guests are asked to refrain from smoking indoors. The pristine water of Sandova Beach and sheltered coves is a mere five-minute drive away. There are several supermarkets on the drive to and in Kalamata, as well as a colourful farmers’ market of local produce every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The locally produced wine is cheap and very quaffable, sold in 1.5 litre plastic bottles. The Kalamata olive oil is probably the best in the world and, harvest permitting, you will be able to taste our own. For those with a lively spirit of discovery, making Eden House a base, there are many places of outstanding natural beauty and great historical interest to visit.
