Beautifully presented, this ground floor two bedroom apartment will capture the imagination of those seeking a charming coastal retreat yet perfectly positioned right in the heart of this bustling historic town.

Originally built as a Quaker meeting house in 1749, the interior has been skillfully designed to create a pure, pared-back style which is the epitome of understated elegance. Using a colour scheme of gentle whites and tranquil neutrals, there is a sense of flow and harmony throughout this apartment which will quickly ease you into a holiday mindset.

The open plan layout has a sophisticated feel with sofas and chairs in natural tickings and linens along with lovely touches and ambient lighting, while the sleek, monochrome scheme of the kitchen and dining space effortlessly blends together the overall look.

The two bedrooms (one double, one single) continue the theme with high quality finishes and super comfortable mattresses where rest will come easily after a day of fresh salty sea air and relaxed days wandering the characterful streets and closes of Berwick upon Tweed.

Local amenities

Sitting just off the A1, the Apartment is perfectly located for short breaks or longer stays throughout any season and provides an excellent base to explore the wider Northumberland and Borders area. With the main East Coast Rail Line running through Berwick it is also an ideal car-free destination served by good local services.

Sitting just a five minute walk from the town centre, the property benefits from excellent amenities right on the doorstep. In one direction, you will find a selection of characterful shops on Castlegate including a book shop, an antique centre, a deli and a fantastic vintage shop, as well as ‘Pier Red’ where you can sip a rich espresso whilst browsing art works and collectibles by popular Northern artists. Also look out for their regular jazz evenings where you can unwind to the smooth, mellow sounds of talented local musicians.

A walk in the other direction will take you to Marygate, the town’s main street where you will find a mix of high street names along with local traders. Other small independent names and quirky shops can be found around the cobbled lanes and closes of the historic old quarter, as well as Hide Hill shops and cafes for a coffee and cake stop. There is a good Antique Centre and gift/interior shops on Bridge Street including one or two great eating spots - Audela for incredible cakes and Gasparo for hearty Italian fayre. Two large supermarkets including a Marks & Spencers food outlet sit on the edge of town.

The area has a rich food heritage and there is something to cater for all tastes and budgets here from tasty fish and chips on the promenade to cosy pubs, characterful cafes or bistro restaurants such as The Maltings Kitchen serving tempting light-bites or a pre-theatre dinner.

Alternatively, why not pop the wine in the fridge and arrange for a platter of seafood to be delivered straight to your door by the Berwick Shellfish Company - oysters reared in the clear North Sea beds of Lindisfarne, lightly smoked kippers from traditional local smokehouses, or perhaps some freshly dressed lobster or langoustines - perfect for a romantic evening-in!

Activities & attractions

With its rich history, charming Georgian architecture, vibrant cultural and arts scene, golden beaches, superb wildlife, extensive leisure opportunities, as well as links to long distance walking and cycling routes, the whole area is quite simply packed with interest.

Walk the outstanding Elizabethan walls of the Old Town taking-in ancient bastions, watchtowers and gun batteries - testament to Berwick’s turbulent past defending England from the Scots. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the coast and Tweed estuary before a visit to the Hawksmoor-designed Berwick Barracks with three separate museums showcasing its military history, as well as part of Sir William Burrell’s art collection.

Next follow Berwick’s Lowry Trail and discover the cobbled streets and seaside scenes depicted in the paintings of the great ‘matchstick men’ painter who was captivated by the town and the area. If that sparks your creative side, why not spend an afternoon out-and-about drawing and painting under the tuition of a renowned local artist.

Berwick has a thriving arts scene at the centre of which is the charming Maltings Theatre which hosts a packed diary of theatre, cinema, dance, comedy and music. There are also a number of galleries in the town, including the Watchtower which hosts a diverse number of events, guest artists and musicians. For something a bit different, take a boat trip from Berwick upstream to Paxton House, a superb Adam mansion which is home to the largest private gallery of any country home in Scotland with an extensive collection of paintings dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many of which have been loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland.

The town hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Riding of the Bounds in May which follows the ancient tradition of riding the town’s boundaries to guard against thieving Reivers; the Seaside Festival in August which includes street entertainers, Punch and Judy, live music, and sandcastle competitions; the Food and Beer Festival in September which is a mouthwatering opportunity to sample all the region’s superb produce; and the Film and Media Arts Festival, the largest of its type in the region.

The area has over 26 miles of fantastic beaches just made for lazy picnics and outdoor adventures. Spittal beach is popular with families with wide golden sands, an attractive promenade and fun splash park, while Cocklawburn, Goswick and Cheswick beaches all sit close by. The stunning beach at Bamburgh is a also a must-visit, sitting just a short 20 minute drive from Berwick.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is about a 20 minute drive from Berwick, only accessible by a causeway at low tide. A designated National Nature Reserve, this tiny, picturesque island is often described as ‘The Jewel of the Northumberland Coast’. It is an overwhelmingly mystical place, home to the evocative remains of a ruined eleventh-century priory, a beautifully restored castle and the infamous Lindisfarne Mead.

There is excellent bird watching on the Tweed estuary around the town and also further afield at St Abb’s Head and the Farne Islands - home to a resident colony of grey seals in addition to an impressive array of birdlife including puffins, guillemots, razorbills and terns.

There are two golf courses close by; Magdalene Fields five minutes from the town offers superb views of the famous Elizabethan walls, the cliffs leading into Scotland and the iconic castles at Bamburgh and Holy Island. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles south of Berwick, Goswick is a highly-regarded links course selected as an Open qualifying course.

For a city day out, Berwick Station is about a 10 minute walk from the apartment offering an easy day trip to the magnificent sights of Edinburgh, just 45 minutes journey by train.

Access is via a secure entry system and the apartment sits on the ground floor.

Bedroom one - 4’6” double bed with double mattress and luxurious memory foam topper for extra height and comfort, chest of drawers, side tables, armchair. There is an in-built cupboard with hanging space in the hallway directly off the bedroom.

Bedroom two - with 3’ single bed, side tables, chest of drawers.

Bathroom - bath with shower over, heated towel rail, basin and WC.

Wi-Fi and mobile coverage

Wi-Fi is provided. Unfortunately due to the thickness of the walls, mobile reception is poor in the apartment but good reception can be found at the front access door of the apartment.

Electric central heating throughout the property.

The beds are made up with high quality Egyptian cotton bed linen, and luxurious mattresses and toppers. A hair dryer is supplied in the master bedroom. Luxurious bath sheets and hand towels are provided for all guests. Au Lait guest toiletries are provided.

A welcome pack is provided with a bottle of wine and provisions some of which may change due to availability and length of stay..

Babies and children

The property is not suitable for babies and young children. Children permitted over the age of 12 only.

Dogs

The apartment is not suitable for dogs.

Parking

There is no private parking provision but ample on-street parking nearby or two local car parks are free to use with a resident's parking permit (which will be left in the property for guests’ use).

Transport

Berwick-upon-Tweed is on the main East Coast line and the apartment is within walking distance of the station and good local amenities so a car is not necessary to enjoy the immediate area.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted in any part of the apartment or building.

Outside space

Please note the property does not have any private outside space, however there are plenty of lovely spots for relaxation within easy walking distance including the Elizabethan walls with panoramic views of the Tweed estuary, the beaches, the river walks and the town’s recently renovated parks.

This is a double glazed ground floor apartment within a newly renovated building comprising ten other apartments over three floors.
