Air conditioning would have been nice
Our family of 4 (two young kids) recently returned from a 2 week stay at the apartment. First of all, Paola was excellent but unfortunately she's not the owner of the flat but manages several rentals. Our flight was delayed several hours and instead of a late afternoon arrival, we ended up arriving at 9pm. Paola was very accommodating though and had no issues with the new time.
But the first night we tried the air conditioning (one unit in the bedroom and one in the living room) and noticed although the fan was working, the air never cooled. We tried every program but nothing helped so the next day we informed Paola who arranged for technicians to come. Unfortunately they couldn't arrive any earlier than one week into our stay by which point the temperature in the flat was close to 30 degrees 24 hours/day. The technicians immediately seemed to see the problem and a part needed to be ordered and we were told the units would not function our entire stay.
Again, Paola was great throughout the whole thing and even offered a fan but our problem was with the owner. We were told that people had been in the flat throughout the summer, yet we were the first people to use the A/C (we stayed the last week of July and first of August) in the season? Of course not and we can only understand that this problem had been known before our arrival. When we asked for a discount, the first time the owner flat out said "No." When we requested again, we were offered the separate A/C fee which we had to pay (a pittance) as a refund. We continued to press and in the end only received about 10% off.
Several nights our kids were worried to go to sleep because it was so hot in the flat. During our stay, the temperature during the day usually reached 40 and one day even 50 degrees! The nights were almost completely unbearable and this completely ruined our holiday. Instead of any understanding from the owner, it appeared he/she was happy to take our money and didn't care.
Again, Paola was excellent and Sardinia is an amazing place, but we would never return to this place and will tell everyone we know never to book this flat.
Porto Pozzo has now become a tourist settlement with numerous houses and villas. The deep 'ria', that is the inlet where the village is located, was once famous for the fish ponds that operated there, then left in abandonment. According to legend, it is in this coast that Homer imagined the meeting of Ulysses with the Lestrigoni, tribe of ferocious shepherds described in the Odyssey.
At the church of S. Tommaso takes place in summer (the Saturday and Sunday before Ferragosto) the homonymous party, made interesting by a series of sporting events and other entertainment, which culminate in a gigantic fry of fish and squid.
Porto Pozzo can be a good base for visiting the splendid and wild island-peninsula of Coluccia. The peninsula is joined to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus, and can be visited on foot, or by landing at the solitary and sheltered beaches that open on the coasts facing the inlet of Porto Pozzo or towards the 'bay' of Liscia.
