Local beaches and towns: Salgado, a very natural and beautiful 6km long beach is just 2 min drive/20 min walk and offers peace and quiet, ideal for beach walks with a beach bar in the Summer.
Nazare, 10 min by car, is a traditional fishing and seaside town with long promenade and tiny winding streets. Popular with families, it has a golden beach, patrolled by a lifeguard in the Summer. A funicular railway takes you up to Sitio, where the views are stunning. Nazare also has a marina ( boats for hire) a fun water park and lots of restaurants.
Sao Martinho do Porto (also 10 min away) is another old seaside town but more modern in comparison to Nazare. A large horse shoe shaped natural bay offers safe bathing and a nature walk.
Both towns have daily markets selling local produce and good supermarkets. They also have a wide selection of small local shops and restaurants offering fish, meat and local dishes e.g. Bacalhao, ChickenPiri Piri and Leitao often at bargain prices. Local wine is also a bargain.
So many places of interest: There are no less than three world heritage sites in local towns in this area i.e. a Cistercian monastery at Alcobaca (also a wine museum here), Manueline monastery at Batalha and the Knights Templar Convento do Cristo at Tomar (one of our favourite days out). The town of Fatima is one of the most important centres of pilgramage for the Roman Catholic world.
Obidos is an impressive medieval walled town, 20 min by car, where time seems to have stood still for several hundred years.
Caldas da Rainha, is a local thermal spa town with a good local daily market in the central Praca da Republica.
There are so many places which are a little further away but fine for a day trip by car, e.g. Peniche - a thriving fishing port and embarkation point for Ilha Berlenga, Santarem - one of the most historic cities in Portugal, Mafra with it's vast Palace Convent, the fascinating old town of Sintra and, of course, Lisbon.
Area of natural beauty and tradition: Accessible from the house are several walking trails which offer so many different and breathtaking views at each twist and turn. It is possible to walk down to the beach but there are also paths around the surrounding hills overlooking the beach.
There is a very long and superb stretch of coastline north of Nazare which has some very pleasant coastal towns (our favourite is Sao Pedro de Moel) with unspoilt beaches. This whole coastline is backed by Pinhal de Leiria, a vast 700 year old pine forest and an area of great natural beauty, ideal for picnics and walking.
The Serras de Aire e Candeeiros is a scenic national park, 40 min by car, a mix of rugged hills and upland farmland. Ideal for walking and picnics.
The whole area is steeped in tradition and many local towns and villages hold their own fairs and festivals which are delightful and include traditional dress, dancing, games and competitions. The local people are so very welcoming and happy for you to join in.
I stayed here with my partner and 4 friends in June 2011, i must say after several years of package holidays i was a little skeptical about a villa holiday? This being my first time to Portugal and my first Villa holiday it was stunning, the Villa itself felt very comfortable i'd like to say it was like home from home but my house is nowhere near as luxurious as this, it was clean and very modern and the pool was heated which is a massive bonus for us,
the beaches are very close and theres plenty to do in the local area, some great little restaurants too, we did stay in most evenings though with plenty of great wine and some fantastic food again that we could buy locally, I felt so relaxed on this holiday and have spoke to Elaine (the owner) to book the villa again in the summer of 2012 for another week this time though i will be taking full advantage of some of the fantastic golf courses the area has to offer, if i were to give this Villa a star rating it would without doubt be 5 STAR*****.
A very unique, modern and spacious house with spectacular countryside and sea views in an area of outstanding beauty which has so much to offer on many levels. Situated in Serra da Pescaria, above the Salgado beach, with local footpaths and trails which can be accessed from the house. Nazare and Sao Martinho do Porto, are two traditional and popular seaside towns, 10 min away by car and there are many further unspoilt beaches just a little further away including Foz do Arelho. For those seeking culture there are plenty of places of interest, including Obidos, a completely enclosed medieval walled town and three world heritage sites (at Alcobaca, Batalha and Tomar) within easy driving distance. Local activities include walking, cycling, fishing, bird-watching and golf. If you already know this area you probably love it as much as we do. If you are new to the area, there is more detailed information on towns, beaches, places of interest and activities below.

Golf: Portugal is renowned for its quality golf courses and this area is no exception. These four courses are all high quality and offer different tests to players of all levels.
Praia Del Rei (30mins)is without doubt the premiere track, voted one of the best in Europe, and offers a memorable mix of true seaside links and pine tree lined fairways. Always presented in lovely condition it will test your handicap and offer a real test of your ability to concentrate to the end as 17 & 18 are tough finishing holes. A post round beer on the terrace, with views of the fairways and the ocean, is a well earned reward.
Royal Obidos,(30mins) our newest course, is next door to Praia del Rei but a totally different test of golf. Cleverly shaped fairways, elevation changes and water hazards lead to large fast greens. Its location and layout means you will face every shot you can imagine to score well. Highly reccomended.
Bom Successo,(30mins)is a parkland course with an open aspect and good views over Obidos lagoon. enjoyable with scope to score well, but beware as 17 & 18 are dangerous and could ruin a good score.
Campo Real,(45mins) is a 'resort course' and, although not long, is very demanding as you need to be straight, more important than length. Wayward shots will be severely punished. Good greens, good views and some great holes.
