About Zoe Cawthorn
We have lived in Spain in the Alpjurras since 2003. We spent 3 years doing up the property in Orgiva and subsequently rented it out for holidays. We spent any spare time that we had, searching for another property but this time near to the sea. We were delighted when we found this old town house in the little Spanish village of Maro. We love the Spanish way of life and enjoy renovating properties. Although we both grew up in the UK (me in Surrey and Nigel in Manchester) I had spent 6 years living in Spain in the 1980's and wanted to come back here to live. Nigel was looking for a new adventure so was more than happy to try Spain.
Zoe Cawthorn purchased this House in 2010
Why Zoe Cawthorn chose Maro
This old town house is in the quiet Spanish village of Maro. within walking distance of bars, restaurants and a couple of shops. It is 5 minutes drive into Nerja or 30 minutes walk. The property has been done up to a high standard and is very comfortable. Well situated for sight seeing, shopping or just relaxing. Has wifi free wifi and booth Spanish and UK television.
What makes this House unique
It is an authentic Spanish village. The bourganvilla in the courtyard, the views of Nerja and the sea from the upstairs patio and the way it lent itself to be modernised whilst being able to keep the character of the house, are what made us choose this property over the many others that we looked at over the 8 years it took us to find it.

Romancing in Andalucia
Helen and I would like to thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home in a traditional Spanish village. We had a memorable time sitting on the terrace in the heat of the sun watching the traffic (in the distance) snake down towards Nerja on into the night. Sitting in the local café/restaurant sipping coffee, looking out at the blue sea and the horizon. And the days spent walking down towards Nerja’s shopping district.
We thoroughly enjoyed our coffee’s in the Bamboo restaurant and our meal in Maria Bonita.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a lovely review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our home in the beautiful village of Maro. It is. as you say, so tranquil and traditional and yet Nerja is so close if you want more buzz than the few bars/restaurants and a couple of shops that Maro provides. We look forward to seeing you out here again sometime soon. Thanks again. Zoe and Nigel
Beautiful traditional home
This is a beautifully restored village home with all modern conveniences. It was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The weather was unseasonably poor when we visited in January but it would be fabulous to sit out in the courtyard or on the balcony on a nice warm day, we will have to visit again. Despite the cold and rain the house was nice and warm and if we had needed it there was a lovely wood burning stove. Maro in January is very quiet but there were a couple of restaurants and bars open, all within a couple of minutes walk. Some parking is available on nearby streets but there is a big car park a couple of minutes walk away. Nerja is about a 10 minute drive away so plenty of bustle and life there and then back to the peace of Maro, perfect. Zoe and her husband were good hosts, met us and showed us around, gave us some tips about local amenities and lovely oranges and lemons from their garden. Good communication prior to the trip as well including detailed directions. We would certainly stay again.
Thank you for your lovely comments and compliments! We do everything we can to help people enjoy their stay in our house. Maro is a lovely quiet village, and as you say, all the restaurants are within a couple of minutes walking distance. All five of the restaurants and the tapas bar, usually stay open throughout the year. One of them has been closed for the winter this year, so hopefully that one will also be open when you next come. We certainly look forward to greeting you at our home again very soon.
Lovely home in a beautiful part of the world!
Lovely home in a beautiful part of the world! We loved the peacefulness of Maro and the activity of Nerja - a wonderful mix! The sunsets from the upper terrace were beautiful and dinners in the lower terrace of the house were so cozy. We had amazing paella at Chiringito de Ayo on Playa Burriana in Nerja and found a hidden beach that was well worth the effort! We had a lovely time. Thank you. Family from Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Very quaint property, well maintained
5 adults stayed for one week and were very comfortable with all aspects. Clean and tidy and everything working properly. Local restaurant also provided good food at reasonable price.
February in Spain
A lovely traditional house in an unspoilt Spanish village. A very nice alternative to February in England.
So pleased that you enjoyed it. I couldn't agree more February in this part of the world is a very good choice! Regards Zoe and Nigel
A beautiful home in a lovely characteristic spanish village
I really loved to stay two weeks with my family in this beautiful home! It's fully and well equipped, from kitchen tools, dishes and electrical appliances to the rest of furniture. The terrace-solarium is so nice, expecially in the evening to enjoy the view of Nerja. Surroundings and neighbors are absolutely quite. The owners, Zoe and Nigel, so kind and helpful for all needs. I'd go back!
Thank you so much. We are very pleased that you enjoyed our home and the village. We look forward to your next visit.
Best wishes from Zoe and Nigel
In the heart of the historic, coastal village of Maro and just a 45 minute drive from Malaga airport. This beautiful unspoilt village is one of the very few in such original condition along the entire coast. The village is still mostly inhabited by Spanish people. Just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the busy coastal town of Nerja this tranquil little village is a peaceful retreat. There are a handful of restaurants and bars within a few minutes walk and Maro beach is only a 15 minute walk away through farm land. Nerja is half an hours walk along a very popular walking/jogging pathway and only a few minutes by car. The famous caves of Nerja are nearby and the picturesque mountain village of Frigiliana only a few minutes drive away. Maro is a superb location for basing yourself as it has excellent access to many popular places that are of interest to holiday-makers, such as The Alhambra Palace and the city of Granada, Sevilla, Ronda, Malaga, Cordoba and many more.
Other Activities: Famous Nerja Caves, sight-seeing, water park, aquarium
