About Vicky & Nick Ritchens
Having spent many years being lucky enough to live & travel abroad, my husband & I realised we wanted to base ourselves in the UK. Devon became a favourite of ours, with its rolling countryside & proximity to the coast plus having family here meant it was the perfect place to move & begin our dream of running holiday cottages & setting up yurt camp. We fell in love with 'glamping' after staying a yurt in the Lake District - there is something really wonderful about sleeping under canvas whilst in a real bed. As soon as we saw it, we realised East Forde Farm was the place to do this and to share it with guests, who we are confident will love it as much as we do, is just perfect. You really can get back to nature here, relax & unwind & we can't wait to see you here soon. Vicky, Nick, Maddy & Moon the dog

Why Vicky & Nick Ritchens chose Exeter
East Forde Farm worked for us in so many ways - with a family home, two cottages and land in a peaceful location just outside a village. Plus many amenities within an easy drive, set East Forde Farm apart from other properties we had viewed in Devon. It's a beautiful drive just 20 minutes from the M5 and even though the town of Exeter is twenty minutes away, it feels so rural. It all fell into place and we decided this was the place for us and our guests.
What makes this Cottage unique
We have stayed in many holiday cottages, but to stay where you not only have a private garden but access to 15 acres of varied land is something really special. With a wood with honey bees, a mature apple orchard, meadows and pathways joining them all together East Forde Farm really is a destination in itself.

Quiet cottage in a beautiful setting
A restful, beautiful setting, (a bit remote so roads were challenging for us but that's because we are not used to one-lane tracks and 10ft hedges!) Friendly and helpful proprietors. The cottage is a cosy open plan space that is comfortable and light, despite it being January. The windows in the bedrooms are skylights, so if you like to sleep with a window open, not an option - especially in January - but that's a minor thing. They are dog friendly.
Thank you so much for your review, we are pleased you found the cottage comfortable and restful, as well as being in a lovely setting. Great to hear. We are so lucky that we have so much further land to offer our guests when they stay - great for dog walking as well. For future reference, although the bedroom windows are skylights, they do open if required. You use the pole that opens and closes the black out blinds to open the windows as well. We know what you mean, compared to most major roads the lanes of Devon can seem a bit narrow - thankfully there are plenty of passing places and generally drivers are pretty respectful of other cars on the roads. We were pleased to help you when required and it was great to meet you all.
A lovely, quiet and quaint countryside cottage.
We loved our stay. Four of us stayed for New Years. The place was perfect and very cosy. It had everything we needed and a well equipped kitchen. The pub is so close and just perfect for a quaint countryside experience. Vicky and Nick were really great hosts. Very relaxed about any requests and quick to respond. I would definitely recommend. Oh and the outdoor bath was a great experience too! (You will need a car).
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay, it was great to have you all here for New Year. Lovely feedback thank you, nice to know you had all you needed and pleased we were able to help where required. Happy New Year to you all and hope to welcome you all again one day soon - the outdoor bathroom is even better in the summer :)
Absolutely beautiful property in a lovely place.
We stayed in Apple tree cottage with our 2 small children and dog during the October half term. The cottage was beautiful and very spacious. A very comfortable stay for a week's holiday. It had every thing we needed and in such a lovely location. We enjoyed walking around the surrounding land and the boys loved the tree house and play area. The owners were lovely and very helpful when we needed their assistance. We would and will be recommending this beautiful place to everyone. Thank you Vicky and Nick . We really hope to visit again in the future.
Thank you so much for your lovely review, we are so pleased you had a good stay and enjoyed all that we have on offer here at The Orchard Retreat. It is great to hear that the cottage suited you all so well and had everything you needed for a weeks holiday. The land the treehouse etc are a real bonus, so we are pleased you were able to use it all. We look forward to welcoming you again one day.
Peaceful, Welcoming & Comfortable
The only downside to our week in this lovely cottage in such a beautiful location, was the one day of light rain in a week of, otherwise perfect, hot sunshine & blue skies! We were so lucky to pick this week in May that turned out to be the turning point in Spring temperatures, but even if the weather hadn't been so perfect, Apple Tree Cottage & Orchard Retreat had plenty of home comforts and entertainment options to keep us well occupied. Books, DVD's and games were all available, plus the new Badminton court & table tennis are really going to be a hit with future guests.
This tranquil streamside setting, with the fantastic fields to wander through, admiring the trees and complete carpet of Wild Garlic was just idyllic, Barney really loved his morning walk and often a quick catch up with his new mate, Moon.
Apple Tree Cottage is beautifully appointed with a well equipped kitchen, plus the sharpest knives we have ever experienced in a holiday cottage, such a relief to be able to slice tomatoes without squashing them!! Comfy sofas, quality beds and a huge bathroom were all icing on the cake, not forgetting the barbecue, which was well used during our week here!
The on site micro shop is a real boon, we made purchases of the delicious local ground coffee, which since we had forgotten to pack any, was a real life saver! Plus really good local charcoal, which was great for the first impromptu barbecue and for the next 3! Next time we hope to make use of the on site wood fired pizza oven!
Vicky, Nick, Maddy & Moon all gave us an enthusiastic & friendly welcome, we felt at home from the word go & thank you so much for the welcome goodies, such a lovely thought, (your home produced apple juice was really delicious).
We hope we can stay at Orchard Retreat again soon, the location is great, easy access to Exeter, the coast and all the lovely woodland & forest walking in Mid Devon. Bickleigh Mill is well worth a wander around & there are numerous National Trust Properties within easy reach. Castle Drogo with it's fabulous views and fantastic access to the Fingle Bridge Gorge walk, much of it alongside the river, is a must and the added bonus is the Café at Drogo serves really good snacks & meals. A visit to Tiverton to walk the towpath or catch a horse drawn boat along the Grand Western Canal, with it's ducks, swans & wildlife is a really great way to while away a few hours.
Thank you all so much for making our stay so great, Nicky, Terry & Barney
Thank you so much for your gorgeously detailed review.
We are so thrilled you loved the cottage and had everything you needed and were comfortable. So pleased the sharp knives helped with your food prep, brilliant. Plus so nice to hear that our location worked so well for you and great to have added your day trips in for future guests, so helpful, thank you.
We would love to welcome you both and Barney again, Moon really did take to him - so sweet to see them playing. Have a lovely summer, lets hope the sun stays out, it is just so lovely!
Cosy Cottage in a beautiful location!
We stayed in the cider cottage for 3 nights on a girls walking/getaway break. Vicky was super friendly and more than happy to help with anything we needed. The cottage was a brilliant size with 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms, one being an on suite. The cottage was cosy and had a lovely wood burner which heated the cottage. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need. I would highly recommend staying here as there were absolutely no downfalls from the property to the location to the owners!!
Fabulous visit Vicky, thank you!
We are so pleased you had a lovely walking break with your girlfriends and loved the cottage and location. So nice to hear - was great to have you all and hope we can welcome you again one day soon.
Great cottage, beautiful location, friendly owners
Stayed here while visiting my daughter at Exeter uni. The cottage was very comfortable for three of us and our cat and dog. Adjacent paddock for walking the dog was perfect, given the lack of public footpaths/paths along the narrow Devon lanes. The countryside is picture perfect - rolling hills as far as the eye can see. The cottage had everything we needed. We stayed in Feb and it was lovely and warm. Highly recommended
What a lovely review, thank you Simon. We are so pleased you had a great stay and the cottage was a perfect base for visiting your daughter at Uni and for the three of you to comfortably stay together.
We love having the additional land, meadows etc, for dog walking - certainly makes it easier for dog owners bringing their dogs to stay.
Was lovely to welcome you cat too and hope you may stay again one day.
Both the North and South Coasts can be accessed within an hours drive, so take your pick from a variety of Devon's fine beaches. Lynton and Lynmouth is lovely with its cliff railway taking you from the beach to the town, the views from the train are spectacular and you can even take your dog on there. Saunton Sands is a surfers paradise and beautiful beach to walk, swim and relax. Situated just over an hour away this is must visit beach and has a shop and restaurant there.
Tiverton M5 to The Orchard Retreat is a 20 minute drive through stunning scenery.
Exeter St Davids Train station is a 20 minute drive (9 miles)
Exeter Airport is a 40 minute drive (17 miles)
1/2 a mile away is the village of Cheriton Fitzpaine which has a village shop & pub.
We highly recommend the village pub, The Ring of Bells - it's just a 20 minute walk from The Orchard Retreat, offering lovely locally sourced food & local beers and ales & a really imaginative menu.
Thornes Farm shop is just next door (about an 8 minute walk) which has an in house café & plenty of lovely local produce.
Exeter is a 20 minute drive with a wealth of shops, cafes & restaurants to choose from.
Crediton is the nearest town, just a 10 minute drive away. Here you will find some lovely little boutiques, a fantastic coffee house, a farmers market, banks and two major supermarkets.
