About 20 minutes drive away is St Lawrence Gap with all its Nightlife: The St Lawrence Gap, in Christchurch Parish, is the night life centre of Barbados, located on the more commercial southern coast of the island. The resorts on the south coast are spread out, some even fairly isolated, but the Gap itself is lined with dozens of shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs, and, correspondingly, several resorts are clustered there as well. This part of Barbados is more casual and inviting than the Platinum Coast, and the resorts are hardly behind high walls.
A couple of minutes drive away or 20 minutes walk you will find our local - Marco Polo Bar and Grill. Launched in May 2014, and working hard with local farmers and fishermen in using only "fresh meat and fish", British expats Marc and Sally Egan created Marco Polo Bar & Grill - a fresh take on the traditional Bajan rum shop blending the best of both cultures to offer great food and drink at affordable rum shop prices. The bar plays relaxing music ranging from the 70's, 80's and today's hits . Every Friday there's a Fish, Chips & Mushy Pea night with Karaoke from vibrant Venezuelan, Francisco, which pulls in the crowds. As for sport, every effort is made to screen all the top sporting action in the "Mount Gay" Lounge.
Beaches: Crane Beach (about 5 min drive), originally a harbour, is considered by many to be one of the island's most beautiful beaches. In fact, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous rated it as 'one of the ten best beaches in the world'! A tour of the resort and complimentary day pass can be arranged for you if you are interested in seeing whats on offer at this spectacular resort.
Located less than 5 min away on the south east coast of Barbados, Foul Bay is absolutely beautiful (despite its unfortunate name!).
The expansive beach is partly shaded by casuarina and palm trees, making it a popular spot on weekends and holidays for picnics and family outings. However, the beach is so long and wide that even then it is never crowded!
Beaches on the south coast have fine white sand but are windier than those on the west coast. Reef-protected areas are safe for swimming. Some beaches have good surf and are prime spots for windsurfing.
Johnny Cool's Jazz and Blues Beach Bar located right on Dover Beach has to be one of my favourite spots on the Island for the best chill out experience ever! Indulge in some of Johnny's (locally known as Cool) superb cocktails and frozen drinks and feel all your stress just melt away in this idyllic setting.
Sailing Barbados: Nature's bounty has blessed Barbados with excellent weather, calm seas and steady breezes, making sailing off Barbados 'just beyond your imagination!'
There are several Barbados yachts and catamarans available for charters. You can join a scheduled cruise or customise your own personal sailing tour.
You can charter large catamarans and yachts for guided sailing tours down the scenic West Coast of Barbados, gliding gently through the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea as the steady winds fill the sails. Relax on board a catamaran and watch the beautiful coastline of Barbados slip by. Then drop anchor in a quiet bay for a swim in the crystal clear waters, followed by a sumptuous Barbados lunch! Whether you're looking for a quiet sail down the coast of Barbados, an exciting water sports adventure, or a romantic sunset cruise, you'll find sailing in Barbados to be simply delightful!
Born in the UK from a Bajan father I have always had a love affair with Barbados. As a youngster with a big dream I purchased some land close to a cliff edge overlooking the Caribbean sea in 2000 and spent many years fantasising what I was going to do with it. I was fortunate enough back in 2007 to get the opportunity to build my dream house, in my dream location on a dream Island.
As I count down the years till 2022 when I will make a life long dream complete and relocate to this wonderful place I invite you all to come share my dream in the meantime.
Chris Cox purchased this apartment in 2000
You won't need to ask once you have visited!!
We had a wonderful holiday staying at the apartment in Ocean City. It is in a beautiful position with lots of things to do nearby. There is a surf school nearby Called Zeds surf school which is great for kids and adults. There is also a restaurant at surfers point which we visited often.
Foule bay beach is one of the most beautiful beaches we've EVER been too!!! A walk 15min walk from the apartment. A real Robinson Crusoe beach with palm trees, coconuts, big waves, barely anyone on it except a few monkeys, heaven
The view from the apartment is amazing. You can hear the sea at night and benefit from the cool breeze that comes in over the sea. The apartment is beautifully furnished very cosy and great when you come in from a day at the beach. All mod cons,Wi-Fi, television with the bbc and other channels even an icemaker in the fridge (good for rum and Coconut water cocktails)
The apartment was amazing. This place is a perfect combo of being away from all the crazyness of the tourist area but close enough that you can go down for a great time in no time. This place is located where people live not so much a ton of tourists, the locals in the area are very helpful if you get lost walking around or have any questions while out as well. There are gorgeous beaches a short drive or taxi away. Izzy is great and helps with anything you may need. Chris is easy to deal with and just a great overall experience. I will definitely be back and having seen the other options for accomidations on the island i would be staying here. Thanks for everything!
Right across a small field from 80 foot cliff is a great place to start & end your day. The incredible view & steady warm breezes coming off thousands of miles of open ocean was only surpassed by the myriad stars that twinkle at night. The location is great as well. 10 minutes from the airport, 15 from the listings Friday night fish fry & 30 from downtown Bridgetown. 2 minutes from the store & 5 from the cozy Crane beach yet the quiet end of the street was the best of both worlds. The villa apartment was clean & comfortable with a great covered porch, walled in yard. The owners are easy to work with and as nice and laid back as the rest of the folks on this wonderful island.
Having spent 2 weeks at this apt in January, we can say unequivocally, this was the best experience we have had on any Caribbean island, much of it due to Chris and Izzy who did everything possible to make our stay at their lovely villa comfortable and seamless, from buying us a new coffee pot so we could have fresh coffee in the morning (as we watched the sun rise over the ocean from our patio), to paving our way to special treatment by local friends. The apt was attractive, well appointed, and very up-to-date with modern conveniences. The location, quiet, away from the hustle and congestion of Bridgetown and the western side, was ideal, with comfortable trade winds and no need for air-conditioning.
Of course, we loved the beaches, especially stunning Bottoms Bay, quiet Foul Bay, and Miami for it's action and local scene. . .loved the rum shops, especially Chicken Rita's and John Moore, and going to Oistin's to pick out fresh fish to grill each night.. Also, don't miss the Coconut Bread made fresh daily from the bakery in the local supermarket just a few blocks away.
All in all, it, was a wonderful vacation, and there is no where else we would go and stay when we return but to this apt on Barbados. Thank you Chris and Izzy!
We spent 10 days in Barbados for our annual surf trip. This was our first time staying on this part of the island and a little bit further from the surf beaches, but we're glad we did. It's a lovely, unspoilt part of the island, but with great access to Freights, Zed's, Oistins and beyond.
Izzy was our font of all knowledge and with her help we found the local mini mart (which is like a tardis, it's so well stocked) and the bigger Emerald City. And because we were on the south east, we could avoid the Oistins traffic.
The villa is super clean and the perfect place to relax after a hard day's surfing. The constant sea breeze meant we never used the aircon - just opened the patio doors and switched on the ceiling fan.
Izzy, Chris and family are the perfect hosts, answering all our questions and tackling any issues immediately. Lovely, friendly people - always on hand to help without being imposing.
We were a couple and one friend, which was fine, but it might be a bit crowded with 4, as it is a compact and bijou villa. We would have liked a BBQ, but that's just a tiny thing. Would highly recommend. Ocean City rocks.
Our family travelled to Barbados for two weeks in Jan 2013 and had a wonderful stay!
Chris's home and Izzy's hospitatlity were fantastic. The vacation was top of the list - if Izzy had offered to adopt our daughter, I'm pretty sure she would still be there.
The apartment was very clean, spacious, well appointed, well cared for and comfortable. It was the perfect size for a family of 4, with two bedrooms, lots of storage space, and the opportunity to spread out and make ourselves at home. Loved having a full kitchen and washing machine for laundry. I still miss the view from the porch while having my morning coffee.
In terms of location, it was great to be on the south east side of the island, as we developed a real fondness for the cliffs, sound of the waves on the reef, and the rugged/natural scenery. We loved the unspoiled nature of the area.
We enjoyed the fact that it was only a short drive to the airport, a large grocery store (Emerald City), and beaches such as Foul Bay and Crane. We were pleased that we could access the southern beaches, St. Lawrence Gap, and Oistens without having to pass through Bridgetown (we found that area to be quite congested and time consuming). The location is perfect if you want to be off the beaten path, but accessible with a quick drive.
We had the benefit of friends with family on the island, so we did not take advantage of Izzy's knowledge and taxi services as much as most guests might. That said, it is a real plus to know that there is someone nearby (i.e. upstairs:) that we could connect with for help with just about anything. Having access to the telephone, as well as friendly guidance was very very helpful.
I did some walking in 'our' neighbourhood, going as far as the area at the south end of Foul Bay. People were very friendly and I felt comfortable on my own. Walk during the early morning before the heat sets in:)
Izzy and Chris couldn't have been more accommodating - lending a smile, the cooler and snorkle gear, as well as some larger pots, etc. We appreciated all of the literature and the tips in the welcome binder - very helpful.
A fantastic holiday and the apartment and location were a big part of that - I would highly recommend this spot. Can't wait to go back, particularly as it is minus 20 degrees outside now at home and I just checked the weathernetwork - a pleasant plus 25 degrees in Bridgetown! Thanks for a very memorable vacation!!!
Ocean City Condo is located on the idyllic island of Barbados in the parish of St Philip. Situated close to the cliff, they offer a spectacular 180-degree view of the dazzling aqua sea and cool sea breeze all year round.
Barbados is a small island, just 14 by 21 miles, so everything is within easy reach. The apartment is located close to the cliff edge in Ocean City, a small community in the parish of St Philip on the south-east of the island. There are many local beaches, the nearest being Foul Bay, about 5 min drive away or about 15 min walk along the cliff edge. It is a beautiful long sandy beach ideal for walks and picnics. Crane Beach (Sunday Telegraph best beach) is also less than 10 min away. There is a well equipped supermarket and mini-mart just 5 min away. The airport is less than 10 min drive away. The Barbados Golf Club is 10 min away, there are many restaurants within a 20 min drive and St Lawrence Gap with its wealth of night life is about 20 min away.
Golf: Barbados Golf Club, located at Durants in the southern parish of Christ Church (about 20 min drive), has become the soul of golfing in Barbados for local players as well as hotel guests and visitors cruising through the Caribbean. The course was approved and sanctioned by the PGA European Tour to host a PGA Seniors Tournament in 2003 and it has also hosted the Barbados Open on several occasions.
The golf course was reopened in 2000 after a period of reconstruction to the environmentally sensitive design specifications of Ron Kirby, one of the most respected and experienced golf course architects in the world. He redesigned the course to produce a fair, challenging and a pleasurable game for golfers of all levels of skill and competence.
The challenges, rewards and scenic views of the course encourage players of all abilities to play with determination to hone their skills while enjoying the company of friends amidst tropical surroundings.
