Exclusive waterside hideaway - The Old Sawmills

9 Reviews
Bedrooms 8
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay nights

Photos and Description of this 8 bedroom holiday cottage in Newquay & St Austell area - The Old Sawmills

One 7 bedroomed house and one 2 bedroomed wooden lodge

Set in its very own tidal creek on the banks of the River Fowey, The Old Sawmills is a haven of tranquility.

A converted water mill dating back to the 17th century

Nestled in acres of woodland, the location alone is stunningly beautiful.

Whilst staying at the Old Sawmills you have the feeling of being on your own island, as access to the Sawmills is by boat... yet you can walk out any time, along the scenic footpath of the Saints way.

The site has seen a wealth of history from medieval merchants to Wind in the Willows, wartime employment to world famous recording studio. Located between the charming village of Golant and the picturesque town of Fowey, it’s both an ideal base for visiting many of the sights of Cornwall and a perfect setting for simply relaxing and watching the tide lap in. Good fishing can be had from the outer quay and there are many walks that can be joined from the grounds

The Old Sawmills is a dog’s paradise too, and well behaved animals are welcome.

The Old Sawmills - somewhere quite special

  • 5 of 5

The Old Sawmills and its location are both wonderful. Together they provide the perfect environment and backdrop to enjoy more important things in life such as nature and good friendships.

We departed reluctantly, but feeling refreshed and charged by such a positive experience.

I hope to return.

We hired out the Old Sawmill and the lodge for the week of our wedding which was taking place in Fowey.

As soon as me and my then Fiancée put eyes on the beautiful Sawmill we knew it had to take centre stage at our wedding. Picturesque and in perfect peace and tranquility; the only access to the Old Sawmill is by boat or an easy 15 minute ramble through the woods from Golant. It's beauty spoke for itself, but the history of the Sawmills as a recording studio added to its attraction. When you step foot inside you are stepping in the footprints of legends. From Oasis to Jessie J; there's a long list of musicians who have recorded tracks in the studios right beneath your feet.

Decorated in fairy lights and with lanterns in the surrounding trees we got the fairy tale wedding that we'd both dreamed of. Drinks in hand friends and family relaxed on the elevated balcony watching fireworks being set off from down next to the estuary while the toasty log fire glowed away inside to take off the chill.

The house manager, Ruth helped make everything possible for us during our stay. There was no problem too big, and no job too small for her. She was a ball of happy positive energy throughout.

A perfect location for a celebratory weekend

  • 5 of 5

We found the Sawmills on the internet searching for a place to stay in January to have a birthday celebration for our son's 21st, when I read the numbers it accommodated and the proximity, it looked perfect, nice and remote, no worries about noise to neighbours, it allowed pets (our Irish Water Spaniel just loved it) and there was a recording studio attached (I didn't realise the history of artists who had recorded there when booking), it sounded fun only having access by boat or foot path. We gathered a group of his close friends from school and uni and managed to keep it as a surprise.

We were staying there when it seemed that the rest of the UK was having dreadful weather, the Sawmills seemed to have it's own micro climate, it was peaceful and calm, although the tides were the highest Ruth had ever witnessed, but that didn't stop our fun, in fact it added to it.

It was an eventful and truly memorable stay. Ruth picked us up in Golant by boat, we had mass catering for feeding 16 people over 3 days, therefore the boat was stacked, we were slightly late and the tide was too high to get under the small bridge so we had to carry everything along the footpath, we dropped 5 chickens and all the eggs in the river, however Ruth was a star and fished all the chickens out, they survived unscathed.

The accommodation was perfect. Plenty of space, an extremely well equipped kitchen that was the hub for social activity, mass catering, partying and chilling. The dining/conservatory room was so warm in January (we had a good trick, we just turned the controls up on the heater!). We never needed to light the wood burner. Considering the numbers of people we found it a really reasonable rental price for out of season. It was very clean, spacious and comfortable.

We had booked the recording studio and our son's old schoolmates who'd come from various uni's across the UK, had a track recorded and mixed. They were really impressed by Tom's skills and dedication. They went away from the weekend with a really professional recording and were totally chuffed.

We'd totally recommend a stay there, go prepared with food, there is plenty of fridge and freezer space, we cooked a roast lunch for 16 without issue, but is was planned on a grand scale. A perfect celebratory weekend, of fun, socialising and just chilling out. I'd imagine it would be stunning on a summers day, but it was as equally beautiful in the winter.

Magical weekend in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

I booked a long weekend at The Sawmills for a group of friends and I to enjoy a relaxing getaway. We had a fantastic time. The house is old and beautiful, we loved getting out on the water in the little boat and canoe. Ruth picked us up from Fowey on the boat which added to a lovely weekend. Very relaxing hide away - I definately recommend and would go back tomorrow.

Fabulous Soiree at the Sawmills

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at the Sawmills, a joint birthday celebration, mainly adults but we also had one couple who stayed with a little baby, they had the lodge next door which was perfect. The location is unbelievable, completely secluded, access is exciting(!) but so long as everyone is prepared for a bit of walking/boating it adds to the experience. Ruth (the manager) helped us no end. The house was very comfortable, clean and warm and well equipped with cooking utensils etc. An unforgettable weekend. We want to go back soon!

The Old Sawmills

  • 5 of 5

We had a absolutely wonderful time at the Old Sawmills. It is perfect accommodation for a big family gathering or getting together with friends. The house itself is clean, well equipped and finished to a high standard. It is situated in a beautiful spot just off the river Fowey, an idyllic retreat so calm and peaceful. There is plenty of beautiful countryside and woodland to explore. To walk into Fowey itself takes about 45mins where there are several lovely pubs/restaurants and shops. Also a quay that is brilliant for crabbing! We recommend hiring a boat not only for getting around but to see the fantastic views from the river. The customer service was excellent from the moment we enquired about the property. Ruth was incredibly helpful and attentive and helped make our stay such a success. I can't recommend The Old Sawmills highly enough, it is a magical place.
