About Rick and Noreen West
Rick and Noreen West are your hosts. We discovered this rare parcel of land in 2004 and worked with architects and builders over the next four years to create Marinus*. It was a challenge to design a home that would be worthy of such a spectacular site but we hope you will agree that we got it right. Rick and Noreen are foodies and wine enthusiasts. We have also hiked most of the Big Sur trails and have explored almost every beach between Ragged Point and Cambria. One of our favorite pastimes is merging both passions and spending the entire afternoon enjoying good food and wine on a secluded beach. We created Marinus to share with friends and family. Now we want to extend the family of people who will experience and truly appreciate this property. We live locally and will endeavor to take the best possible care of our guests. * Marinus is the name of our estate and means "of the sea" in Latin.
Rick and Noreen West purchased this Estate in 2008
Why Rick and Noreen West chose San Simeon
Rick: I was born in Los Angeles. After graduating high school and before my first year at Cal Poly State University at San Luis Obispo, three buddies and I took an extended surfing trip from San Diego to San Fransisco. I was so taken with the Big Sur coast that it became my dream to live here someday. I have traveled all over the world and have never been able to identify another place that I felt so strongly about. Many years later Noreen and I purchased this parcel and started to realize the dream.
What makes this Estate unique
Rick: There is something very special about the Big Sur Coast. This place is so rugged, so powerful and so beautiful that just being in this environment will lift most people out of the numbness of everyday life. Is it a Zen thing? Is it a result of a complete immersion in nature? I don't know. I am fairly cynical person but this place has always been a spiritual tonic for me.

Truly one of the most beautiful properties I have stayed at.
Our family spent the Holiday weekend in this beautiful house. The location, the view, the house itself is just perfect for us. Highly recommended
Great Relaxation Spot
The property was beautiful. We were traveling with a group of three couples. The house worked wonderfully to allow for gathering together but still allowed couples privacy. We enjoyed beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the mountains and the ocean. We really enjoyed a short trip down the 1 to the Elephant Seal rookery and several local hiking trails.
The house was well furnished and the beds were very comfortable.
We look forward to a return trip to the area and a stay at this property.
Contemporary Ocean Front
This is an extremely well appointed contemporary ocean front property with a beautiful mixture of stone, wood and glass.. Dramatic water views through floor to ceiling glass from all over the house. Every amenity has been provided and is situated within a very short drive to restaurants, Hearst Castle and activities. The sound of the ocean ever present as you drift off at the end of the evening. Fantastic!
Best Vacation Rental EVER!!!
We had an amazing time at Marinus! Such a peaceful and beautiful house and location! Perfect spot for a Big Sur home base! Can't wait to go back and stay there again! Ocean views to die for and the stars at night seemed hard to believe they were real. The house had just about everything you need for your stay. Thanks Rick and Noreen for sharing your amazing home with us!
Breath-taking view, equipped with everything you need
The house has breath-taking view from any angle. We don't want to leave the house at all. It is equipped with everything you need, in kitchen, bedrooms, theater room, gym, outdoor fireplace, balcony, etc. This is a gem you cannot miss along highway 1.
The Ragged Point Inn - Great food, beautiful setting, live music on the patio on spring/summer weekends. Located within one mile of the property.
Hearst Castle - Please invest the time to see the Castle. You will need to purchase tickets on-line in advance. After your castle tour, have some casual but delicious food at Sebastian's Cafe and taste Hearst Ranch wines just across the highway from the Castle in old San Simeon.
Paso Robles Wine Tasting - The Wine Wrangler shuttle will pick you up at the Ragged Point Inn for a wine tasting tour. Our favorite wineries are Niner, Opolo and Halter Ranch. Calcareous is also really special but is fairly remote.
Elephant Seal Viewing - A somewhat bizarre show of some very large sea mammals.
Cambria - A charming artist community with some great restaurants and shops.
The Sea Chest Restaurant - Located in Cambria. Possibly the best sea food you will ever have in a unique old-school atmosphere, TIP - Have dinner at 8PM to avoid the 1-hour wait.
Robin's Restaurant - Located in Cambria We have dined there many, many times and are always impressed with the quality and creativity.
