Surprise - a hideout!

  • 3 of 5

We were a little disappointed at the start but in the end enjoyed our holiday in North Devon because the people are so friendly and it s such a lovely and convenient spot to be in. We felt that the write up of Crawford Cottage should have been more specific. In particular, there is an enclosed garden, so good for our 2 dogs), but did not mention how steep it is and the 3 high steps to the patio, not to mention several steps up to the cottage. This made it difficult for our older golden and had it been clear in the description of the property, we would not have selected it. The cottage is also self catering, however the catering facilities are very basic e.g. It took ages to boil eggs on the hot plate so you can imagine cooking was really not an option. Finally , the water pressure was very low in the shower. All these should be clearly disclosed. Furthermore Choices Cottages conduct their business through form filling and internet . I could not find a phone number to ask questions before booking. They were also very efficient in taking payment from me but slow to provide the further holiday cottage information. Altogether very impersonal. But We were very pleased to meet the couple Peter and Debbie, owners of the cottage I believe. They were very friendly and helpful in telling us where to go for walks other dogs and dog friendly places to have meals. So the cottage is cosy and comfortable and in a great location. Just need to know exactly what the facilities are.Thank you Debbie and Peter for the pretty flowers and cream tea!

CYCLE TO - Cyclists can enjoy the 30-mile Tarka Trail tracking the scenic coastline of North Devon. Also cycle to Braunton with its many local restaurants and pubs offering a superb variety of food and entertainment such as Squires (great fish and chips), At One (Tapas Evenings), The George Pub (great local food as well as Thai Cuisine) and The Williams Arms (well renowned Sunday roasts).

DRIVE TO - The beaches of Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe are only a short drive away (note to pet owners: Saunton, Putsborough and Woolacombe have demarcated pet-friendly areas for your dog). A day at historic Braunton Burrows is great for walkers. For the more adventurous, kite surfing, surfing, horse riding and kayaking are popular sports in the area. Cultural days can be passed at Arlington Court, historic Clovelly Village, Watermouth Castle, Lynton, Lynmouth and many more. Saunton Golf Course is a mere 3 miles down the road with its 2 famous links courses. Finally, picturesque walks through beautiful forested areas and running rivers such as at Watersmeet will complete your wonderful stay in the beautiful part of England.

PETS - North Devon features five all year round pet friendly beaches.
