Why Mitch chose Southwestern Colorado

22 Elk Avenue is the last house on left as you drive up Crested Butte National Historic Distrct's main Street. It is the ultimate neighborhood in this town. Close to restaurants, shopping and the free bus shuttle. You can ride your mountain bike or cross country ski out your door and access miles of epic trails without ever touching pavement. I have no proof but knowing the area and having been the Chair of the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission for ten years I am convinced that this is where native americans set up their camps for thousands of years and european settlers followed their example to put their main Street. The superior micro climate is noticeable from even blocks away as you are protected from windier storm paths. Today's vacationer can enjoy being in the core of town and at the edge of it at the same time.

What makes this house unique

Crested Butte Mountasin Resort is one of the best ski mountains in the country. The extreme's are challenging and plentiful. The quality of slope grooming has risen to world class in recent years. The terrain parks and features (my son's winter habitat) are state of the art. Telemark skiing was reborn here in the 70's. I remember taking my old school lace up downhill ski boots down to the saddlemaker in Gunnison to have him sew on vibram soles that would fit into the three pin bindings on my long skinny tele skis. The equipment has come along way and some of the top Tele skiers in the world ski this mountain. Crested Butte was also the place where mountain biking started. I bought my first 15 speed mountain bike from a friend in 1980 it was built here in 1977 on a little john frame using motorcycle drum breaks. You could not walk into a store and buy a mountain bike at the time. I still use this bike as my townie today. The personality of the community is what makes this town, friendly, athletic, cutting edge and socially responsible.

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with 4 adults over 4th of July weekend and it was just magical. You cannot ask for a better location when visiting Crested Butte. Right on the main street but at the end, so you have some peace and quiet. An adorable cafe just across the street, off street parking for 2 cars and even has a side yard and fire pit (which many other places do not.) we made a fire every night! Mitch lives right across the street and was instantly available for anything we needed. Will definitely be coming back!

Location, Location, Location

  • 4 of 5

Four couples stayed a week in the End of Elk House the week of October 8 - 15th and had a wonderful time. The house is close to downtown and easy walk from all the businesses. My only complaint was that one bedroom, the one with a full bed, had only a place to hang clothes and no dresser to put you clothing in. I thought a short dresser could have been placed under the hanging bar and it would have been much more user friendly. Overall though, we enjoyed the house and I would personally stay there again.

Can't beat the location!!! BUT definitely lacking in expected amenities like toilet paper, soap, etc

  • 4 of 5

End of Elk was fantastic overall experience for us. We were a group of 9 and one newborn that was in town for a wedding, and we all fit very comfortably in the home. It was a cant-beat location right at the end of the main strip, but not so close that it was noisy at night. The outdoor space was great to gather in as well. The trailhead for the woods walk is just up the hill, and there are a ton of good places to eat nearby. Parking is very easy as well, but beware of the art festivals and farmers markets on Sundays in the summertime, and plowing times in the winter. Mitch was helpful in that he popped over on Saturday to remind us about the art festival and to move our cars if we planned on leaving in the morning.

Our biggest gripe was that most of us came in from out of state, and therefore didn't travel with shampoo and whatnot. Maybe I didn't look closely enough on the rental details, but I would expect toilet paper, soap, and shampoo to be included for each bathroom. All other vrbo properties I've stayed in have provided those things. When we arrived, there was none of these things (not even toilet paper).

Lovely outdoor area for friends to gather

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the End of Elk home. It was very comfortable for my family and friends. The location is perfect. it is right across from the bakery/coffee shop and you can walk anywhere on Elk easily. The side yard has a firepit which we used, and we relaxed and enjoyed the day in the yard. My granddaughter rented a bike and she and Gdad rode down the sidewalk ( she is 2 1/2).

The owner was very responsive when we needed a lightbulb. I would recommend this home to anyone wishing to stay in CB.

Fun location at end of Elk

  • 4 of 5

Location at end of Elk was a lot of fun. Great access to the trails off Kebler Pass. We were there with 4 adults and 5 kids (one in a crib) and it felt a little tight. The side yard yelped for the kids. Mitch is super nice, and the stay overall was a good one.

Convenient Location in Charming Victorian

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the "End of Elk Avenue" over Christmas and had a lovely time! Mitch, the owner, is very friendly & responsive and accommodating. We were able to bring our (well-behaved) dogs with us & Mitch was very flexible about check-in time, as we were driving in from far away. He helped us trouble shoot the washing machine, which we couldn't get to work due to the cold weather (Turned out a hidden valve needed turning).

The facilities worked fairly well for us, though I would suggest a bit of updating, decor-wise & functionally. My sister and her husband who stayed in the master suite, told me it got pretty cold in there because the windows are single-paned and thus the cold air would pour in. Still, they brought in a couple of blankets from their car &were able to be warm enough. Some of us stayed upstairs, off which there are two bedrooms. The beds are twins with matresses that are lightweight & tend to shift around. Looking at the room, it seems to me it would be advantageous to put one full/queen + a twin in the larger upstairs bedroom (queen under the window facing the courtyard), for more versatility. The only other negative I will mention, is the stairs to the upstairs, which I thought were very dangerous for two reasons: 1) No railing to hold onto & 2) The stairs have two inch wide planks that stick up 1/4" & are very easy to trip on (we all did it at least once--even my dog :-)

Other than that, the bedroom by the kitchen was perfect for my elderly mother--no stairs to negotiate & a bathroom right next to it. The rest of the house was terrific. The kitchen worked out very well for all the cooking & baking I did, & the fireplace with thermostatic control was very cozy indeed! There was a good sized table & sturdy chairs in the dining nook and comfortable sofas and a recliner in the livingroom area, plus plenty of hooks and shelves for stowing gear as you walk in the door and a bench where you can take your boots on & off. The location was ideal--Elk Avenue is the main street with most of the retail & restaurants and as you are located at the end if Elk you also have the advantage of being a bit away from the fray. And coffee & pastries & fresh squeezed O.J. are right across the street. I got in the habit of getting a fresh O.J. in the morning and putting it in a glass with as much snow as I could fit, making a great slushie...I would definitely stay here again & can see how great it would be during the summer months as well!
