About the property

Romantic setting within the historic centre.

A large studio on the second floor of an 18th Century stone town house with tall windows and a spacious mezzanine bedroom, simply furnished “à la 'Matisse''. The front door of the building opens onto Rue de la République, a charming old street with shops. The windows of the apartment overlook a terrace below then the tree lined Boulevard Gambetta. The Cordeliers car park which serves the centre of town is about 250m from the apartment. It is inexpensive and reasnably secure. (First 90 minutes are free). You will be only a few steps from the arcaded Place aux Herbes, famous for its colourful Saturday market. Uzès, built from the white limestone on which it stands, is the perfect place to forget about time, relax and lose yourself in the maze of little streets full of boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and stunning architecture. From here you can explore important sites like Nîmes, Avignon, the Pont du Gard, Arles, Saint-Rémy, the Camargue and the Cévennes.

top tourist attractions near Uzès: Uzès itself, the Pont du Gard, the Roman Arena and Maison Carrée in Nîmes, the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Roman theatre in Orange, the Aven d'Orgnac (a spectacular cave on an immense scale), near Barjac, the Château at les Baux de Provence, L'Asile of Sant Paul de Mausolée where Van Gogh was interned for 15 months, the beautifully wild Gorges du Gardon, the Photographic Festival throughout the summer months in Arles and its Roman arena, the medieval walled city of Aigues Mortes, the mountains and forests of the Cevennes, the Camargue where you can see the flamingoes...

Bathing: There is sea bathing at la Grande Motte, Grau du Roi, the wild Espiguette beach further to the West, or beside the enchanting town of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. River bathing is popular in the Gardon at Collias, or at the Pont du Gard. The Cèze near Goudargues also provides good bathing; and warmer water than the Gardon! Uzès has a small open air swimming pool, at its quietest between noon and 2pm.

More physical!: Canoeing from Collias through the Pont du Gard, Canoeing on the Cèze, 'Acro-branches' - cables and pulleys between high trees in the Cevennes, Walking in the Garrigue, Bicycle hire is available for exploring the area more peacefully.

About Oliver Bevan

I am an artist !painter) who graduated from the Royal College in London in 1964, fellow student of Hockney and other "Pop" artists. I now have my own gallery in Uzès open on market days. Style: Realist with abstract tendencies. You can google my site!

Oliver Bevan purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Oliver Bevan chose Uzès

Chosen and decorated by artists, it has an intimate character, and is particularly well placed in the town. The area is busy but calm in the evenings and at night.

I am there to advise on transport and anything else. A ^personal guide to things practical and cultural etc is provided. Many recommendations for activities and visits are included.

What makes this apartment unique

I loved the tall french windows which reminded me of the paintings Matisse did in Nice. The massive beams also give the studio a splendid atmosphere.

Great bed! Responsive, friendly management!! Lovely neighborhood close to great restaurants! Love!

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing place! Very convenient to everything we wanted to do and see, and a restful place to come home to in the evening. Such friendly people! And a market of some sort or a festival nearly every day we were there. FUN!

The owner is very responsive and friendly. (Also a phenomenal artist, so be sure to visit his gallery just a short walk across the square from the flat.)

All the comforts you could wish for including the sharpest knife I've ever used in a rental!

Note that the stairs are steep, and there's a beam to cross with little steps to get to the bed, in case that's an issue for you. The bed is very comfortable.

It was nice for us to have the upstairs space to spread out and the downstairs space we kept free of the detritus of traveling.

Loved our stay, a week was just too short.

Highly recommended!!

Lovely apartment in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in Uzes in this little apartment. It's so close to everything in town that it was really easy to get around on foot. Many lovely boulangeries and cafes/restaurants nearby. Loved the mezzanine bedroom and the kitchen was really well-equipped so we could cater for ourselves some of the time. Oliver was an excellent host, made check-in and check out really easy and gave lots of information in the apartment, both about Uzes and suggestions for things to do further afield. Overall highly recommended.

Exactly as per description and reviews.

  • 4 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this property, it was exactly as I had expected, except that it was bigger than expected judging by the photos. I was impressed by the staircase to the mezzanine as so often they are very small and an add on, but this was actually very well done and easy to negotiate. Yes there is a beam to negotiate, but remember when you stay in the old quarter of a village in France, there are going to be some quirky affects here and there.

Location, location, location - superb, easy access to the local bus station and every other amenity you may require.

I travel only on public transport, a sole traveler and felt that the location was excellent for visiting other towns and villages in the area. I would suggest to people that this is an excellent base to visit Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard and various other little villages in the vacinity in preference to the large towns.

Oliver was most helpful and an excellent communicator.

Central, spacious, modernized small apartment

  • 4 of 5

Short stay in mid June. This is a spacious, carefully modernized small apartment in one of the large ancient stone buildings in the centre of Uzes. Immediate access to the main market square with its superb Saturday market (and many smaller artisan markets as well). Everything is within easy reach : cafes, restaurants, galleries, shops, food stores, cinema, post office, parking. There's a public swimming pool in Summer.

Uzes is a lovely, historic town in a vibrant, beautiful region.Lots to do, places to see : local food production 9wine, olives, oil), independent painting, sculpture and pottery galleries/studios. First rate music, dance, theatre, film festivals throughout the year in Uzes and the villages around. Further afield, Nimes, Avignon, Orange. The Mediterranean is about an hour (beautiful country route through Sommieres); the Cevennes mountains probably closer. Wonderful walking directly out of Uzes into the vineyards and 'garrigue' around the town. The Gardon river is 20 minutes away with canoeing, swimming and some truly spendid walking --- along with the Pont du Gard and its museum.

Highly recommended. Oliver was easily available and always enormously helpful.

Charming apartment with bedroom loft in the heart of Uzes

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed having a place to call home in the middle of Uzes. The apartment has everything one needs for a pleasant holiday. The French doors made for pleasant breezes into the apartment and the ceiling fan was a bonus on the couple of days when the heat was particularly high. The apartment is within walking distance of everything: shops, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, post office, and the bus stop and taxi stop. The apartment was clean and had the basic cooking necessities, including the all important wine bottle opener, a hot water kettle, a coffee press and drip coffee maker. I made a couple of pleasant dinners there. The owner, Oliver, is very helpful and arranged a cab for me on my arrival in Nimes after my rental car fell through. I would definitely stay here again.

If anyone has difficulties with stairs, the bedroom loft might be a bit much to navigate, especially as the bathroom is downstairs. It makes it challenging when one is half asleep or wakes in the middle of the night and needs to use the facilities, so take the stairs with caution. The apartment is also on the third floor if you count the ground floor as the first floor, which the French do not do, so be prepared and pack light or have someone help you with your suitcases. I was lucky enough to have a kind gentleman carry my heavy case up the stairs to the apartment.

I enjoyed a number of the restaurants and shops in Uzes. There is a little gift shop just across the street and a little bit down past the clothing shops from the main street door into the apartment complex on Rue de la Republic. The ladies that run the shop were so sweet and carefully wrapped my chosen gifts for transport home. The bakery, La Nougatine, almost directly below the apartment on the ground floor on the other street, sends wafts of pleasant smells into the apartment beginning around 6am. They serve very good bakery items, sandwiches, and my favorite, pain au chocolate. My most pleasant day was spent on a wine tour with Promo Vinum. I highly recommend it. We visited four wineries in the area and had a very pleasant lunch in Chateauneuf de Papa. Joe Mclean is the tour guide and he is very knowledgeable about wine and very pleasant company. I will miss Uzes and look forward to returning there again.

Wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week in this cute studio. The location is above a boulangerie (we loved the smell of baking bread and pastries in the stairwell) and a few steps from the main plaza. We were there for the two market days. It was wonderful to walk out the door and instantly be in the midst of the market. While the location is very good, the studio does have it's quirks. The bed is up a short flight of stairs to the loft. To get to the bed you need to be agile to climb over a large beam. The living room furniture is adequate but the sofas could be more comfortable. We enjoyed the restaurants and also shopping for our food and cooking. There are adequate pots and pans but the kitchen utensils should be replaced, e.g. the knives barely cut bread. These were minor inconveniences. The living area overlooks the main street and it was nice watching the shop owners and pedestrians below go about their day. Oliver was friendly and offered lots of suggestions and was very responsive to our queries.
